    Mike Portnoy (ex Dream Theater drummer) put out a CZcams video where he counts time signature changes in this song. It is also reported that there are over 100 time signature changes in this song. 🤯🤯🤯

    This song is part of a larger
    body of work, you must listen to
    the whole album to truly appreciate
    the depths that they have descended
    to create the composition.

    I rarely subscribe to You Tube channels these days, as it can quickly add up to more than I have time for, but I just subscribed here, and as a long time prog fan myself, I'm happy to do so!

    You gotta do this whole album and this was a great taste of one of the greatest Prog albums of the past 30 years!!
    It's a direct sequel to Metropolis Pt. 1 and thus uses familiar elements but also quite a few new textures ranging from Gospel to Avant-garde to R&B to Pop to Electronic and so on!
    Metropolis Pt. 2 is much more the type of Classic 70s Prog Rock concept album with a whole Rock Opera narrative and variations in styles and inlfuences!

    As you can guess they are heavily influenced by Rush, Dixie dregs,Yes, etc. The band is known for their time signature changes. Some releases are harder than others.. they just won their first Grammy this year after 30 something years in the business for The Alien off their latest release. Give it a listen. They are all standout musicians especially my favorite guitarist John Petrucci as you will find out the more to listen to them.

    • @Heatwave9000
      @Heatwave9000 Před 2 lety +2

      Grammies are meaningless nowadays they hand them out to artists who aren't even musicians. Programming sounds on a computer doesn't make you a musician. If grammies were truely awarded to the greatest musicians, DT would already have loads of awards.

    • @fredlong6984
      @fredlong6984 Před 2 lety +1

      @@Heatwave9000 I agree with your Grammy opinion .. I’ve been a DT fan since 92. They have more talent on their pinkies than these idiots who they pass those little statues out to every year. That’s why its so amazing that they finally got recognized …

    Also, in the heavier realm of prog you have the band Symphony X from New Jersey. They are an incredible band with an amazing lead singer, Russell Allen.

    • @Heatwave9000

    if you haven't yet, check out The Alien which they won a grammy for. It's also off their last album so you can hear how this progressive band has progressed even more.. :) This song is way more entertaining live.. There's some great live dvd concerts by these guys.

    Try Opeth "Ghost of Perdition" or "Harlequin Forest" or "Deliverance" or "Fait in others"... or all of them :D
    Also check out "Pain of Salvation", maybe start with their song "The Perfect Element" or "King of Loss"

    You've covered two of their wildest songs, as far as time changes and technicality goes. This one is actually sort of a sequel to the first song you listened to, the whoel album is actually. You can hear a few themes here that return form that song. A few suggestions that cover a broader range of their sound:
    The Glass Prison, Our New World, The Best of Times, Trial of Tears, Innocence Faded, Sacrificed Sons. Just pulling some off the top of my head, these only scratch the surface of course.

    Fantastic job my friend. I suggest doing Dream Theater “Instrumedley”. It’s all instrumental and if you do the first “Instrumedley” with Mike Portnoy it’s double time-size than Mike Mangini. Don’t get me wrong ❤️ Mangini. You don’t regret it my friend

    Another band that you might consider is Fates Warning. They're a lot more tame than Dream Theater, but they were extremely influential on DT. They put out their first album in the mid 80's and recently released their final album a couple of years ago. A few songs that might be a good starting point would be From the Rooftops, And Yet it Moves, A Handful of Doubt, The Eleventh Hour and Nothing Left to Say.

    This Dt’s album, Scenes From A Memory is a long epic song, 78 minutes long. Extracting a part like this, not sure it is the best way to fully appreciate the album or even a part of it, cause you may lose some of the sense of the album..

    They aren't always this technical btw you just happened to cover two of their most technical songs. Songs like Dance of Eternity need multiple listens to understand but it definitly grows on you. They have more heavier songs, great ballads aswell as prog epics on each album.
