James learned all the rules of jazz but here he's showing us to break them and do your modern thing. He is the most innovative and creative in jazz today. Fortunately, he's accompanied by similar individuals who are deeply rooted in the true tradition of jazz wich stresses freedom, liberety, and improvisation...how to be yourself, not a clone of somebody else!
Being a saxophonist myself for over40 yrs. I think his approach to jazz is unique and i can truly appreciate the musical sentences he expresses. His technique is by far the best of what I have heard. I'm so sorry for individuals who can't appreciate his creativity of the craft of saxology. He's definitely at the top of the food chain and he has become over the years even more expressive artist and all I can say is continue growing and developing with that sax. This is food for the gods.

I'm 11 years old and i have LOVED jazz ever since I was 6
lmfao ur 11?
I understand why, jazz is music of the soul :')
Keep it up, I hope you also try your hand at playing an instrument!
Lisa Simpson please relogin
James just played with our band here in Detroit at a joint on the East Side. He dropped in to sit in for a couple tunes and blew the roof off with that bari sax.
James Carter, such a great saxophonist but so underrated !
Underrater?!?? is a big saxophinist he playing with all band and big band just a unkonwn ppl dont listen jazz bebop think him underrated
Underrated I think he is overrated !
James Carter....amazing, he adds the flare and class that many saxophonist wished they had, I'm one of them. He's truly is an inspiration, he never takes any prisoners. Just kills it.
May I also say that he's Rahsaan Roland Kirk reincarnated
it's so thrilling to know that these great musicians still love these standards as much as we who appreciate the classics which never grow in any direction but to the sky in popularity and feeling ,as a percussionist I am in absolute Heaven when playing to these great tunes
James Carter always on beast mode
😂For Sure!!
Jazz is freedom!
Its an evolution of the horn experience, you might not be ready for it, but you surely have to respect the talent.
5:55 what a lick
Mr. Carter!!
Man, jazz is exciting!
18:00ish: that looks like a Selmer VI ,low A model. You don't see those very often!
You're right!
Kenneth H I thought that it was a tenor when he held the bell. Thank you for the info!
Really like his interpretation of clarinet....Bechet meets dolphy
Joe Tighe:
I beg that he integrates more clarinet playing in his performances.
Won't that be SOMETHING?
Let's ask Toni Scott, a rambunctiously pugnacious clarinetist?
By the by, is Toni Scott still around?
Hope he is - and performing!
Girl, those astra-spherical altissimo (overtone high) notes by Toni!
That's true Circular Breathing - in context of his Improvisational discourses.
No mere one-note gimmick, mind you!
32:12 that continuous breathing God damn what a pro in his twenties
Toca demais!!!!!
Fenomenal
Wow amazing
Jazz is magic
An artist can lose his audience if he 'over creates'; or has become too abstract, agreed. Knowing one's audience is OF paramount importance to a 'successful' performance.
awesome!
fantastico
I hear a lot of history in his sound in places...Lockjaw among others. I still much prefer the other tenor player, not because of technique or ability, but because of his sound and his incredible ideas, it just felt more musical to me and less focused on speed and effects (although I’m sure he could have done those too). Branford Marsalis said in one of his masterclasses that any good student of music can develop good technique, music is not technique, it’s about what you give the audience. I did really enjoy the performance though!
Wow!
Fera brabíssima !!!
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
First saw young Mr. Carter at Detroit Jazz Festival with Bird-Trane-Sco-Now when the saxophone was bigger than he was. "The 36 black notes, the 36 black notes" And Misters Shahid and Tabbal, the backbone of Griot Galaxy, laid back in the cut.
Queria saber quando o Brasil vai ter um público desse pra música instrumental nos eventos!!!!
Show!!!
Compartilho dessa mesma utopia... mas desista! Nem eu, nem você e garanto que nem até nossa 75ª geração viverá para ver isso kkkkk
Kkkkkkk, será!!!
Espero que em breve! :)
nunca meu irmão
Lá só tem fera
Buenisimo::::::V🤩
CRAIG!
JAMES CARTER IS INFUCKINGTASIC!!!! YOU HEARD ME!!!!!
carter trust jazzman!
Man you can hear the soul of coleman hawkins in his playing on body and soul!
Ce type est un ovni , aucun doute !!!!!
Tá com o cranco não.
Vai desmontar o sax alto kkkkkk
Toca demais parabéns
Nice! Alto sax with a low "A" key!
It's a Selmer Mark IV, with low A but without High F♯.
Most vintage horns don’t have high F# keys
extraordinary concert, but the first composition is not JC On Set it is Don's Idea which is featured on the Carterian Fashion album
EL SAXOFONISTA POR EXCELENCIA DEL SIGLO XXI. UN GIGANTE. MUCHAS GRACIAS POR TU MUSICA, JAMES, Y POR TU ENERGIA INCESANTE. ERES UNICO E IRREPETIBLE.
Smooth jazz sucks and Mr. Carter blasts everyone away. "I'm very grateful to introduce our first guest today. He's been called the hottest new saxophonist on the jazz scene. Inspired by Miles Davis, Bud Powell, Jimi Hendrix, Parliament Funkadelic, even Saturday morning cartoons. His new album is hot, it's called Conversation With The Elders. Please help me welcome to the stage Atlantic Recording artist James Carter." 0:15
A question, also to Mr. Carter. Is this a low A key alto sax? Didn't also Ornette Coleman had one of these? How easy/difficult are these to find?
Alto sax?
You can find them, they are just temperamental and not cheap from what I’ve seen. Also much heavier than your typical alto. The low A is great for recording sessions though!
That was hard to get through.
18:58 John Coltrane
Almost my dream gig! And this guy's better than Michael Brecker was.
12:25 - 25:00 sounds like it was inspired by Monk's Dream
If we listen carefully at all he does and has done on his saxes. You can notice that just a few guys out there have the technique and the virtuosity he has. Someone liking his style, ways of playing or not thats another matter. This guy is just too much for some lol Peace!
McのJ・ヘン・・・おこがましい事、この上無し~このGigの何処に革新性在りや????
Don't know why but it sounds like a Eb clarinet...
how does he do the huge pop at 30:01?
it's called slap tounge or smack tounge, it's essentially pulling back the reed with a suction and letting it slap back, causing it to vibrate through the entire horn.
Jazz is a science of individual expressiveness, and is a language understood and appreciated by only those who operate auditorially and receptively in that linguistically MUSIC environment. YOU will agree that most speakers of American English will find, let's say, Chinese boring.Too bad for them...what a loss!
Liking or not liking Carter is a matter of taste (I personally like this concert of his). Irrespective of that, it is undeniable that he is an outstanding musician.
Quote at 19:35 ?
One of the top musicians of today and he doesn't have a stand for his horns? (just poking fun)
дали джаза
Unchained
This man right here does know how to wear suits.
Is this Music?
これは楽器本来の音じゃねー
В России любителей джаза почти не осталось( единицы). Остались только маргиналы,слушающие фриков типа Моргенштерн или Бузова.( К сожалению).
James Carter, nada humilde e ego altíssimo, apagou o outro saxofonista.

I love jazz and its sense of free, but I think his music is just obsessed with something new and peculiar. . somewhat painful to enjoy..
Unfortunately Carter plays everything LOUD and his clarinet tone is really bad 😱😱 TRUTH !!!
good in sax,bad as a clarinetist
He sure can play fast, but that just ain't musical !! He could also work on his tone too.
czcams.com/video/tJ_cnJp71BAT/video.htmlake a listen Christo. You may want to choose your words more wisely. He needs to work on his tone? wow you need to work on your ears buddy
Christo, his few two notes made me question what exactly YOU were listening to? I must be tone deaf 'cos I don't hear a tone problem with this musician. However, if you were to question his choice of stage-wear then you'd have my ear. Looks like he was off down the park for a kick around after the show.
very musical, sorry dude. the definition of that is too subjective.
Es Pura Vida Carter is a living legend. May not be for you, but you can’t deny the dude has some ridiculously insane chops. Not everyone is going to play like Parker or Coltrane, Jazz is a dying art form and this dude is doing his best to keep it around. Purists kill genres, this dude made me want to head into the practice room on several occasions.
He has the best tenor sax tone ive ever heard
he's very immature and sounds boring with all the slap tonging and show off effects
Man jazz is boring
Nah it just is what it is. Some people find it boring others dont
+Samsgarden ,, yes but I am sorry you kept watching,, did your mother force you to watch?
What a blanket statement, don't engage, you won't be missed.
