I'll give this to Kobe... he had above-average athleticism. There are plenty of guys who have played in the league who were far, far more athletic than he was. But he attained the level of success that he had because he worked so much harder than everyone else. He is the poster child for the phrase, "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard." People forget that he was intolerable for most of his career. But his injuries at the end of his career humbled him and he started explaining his mindset to people as his career was ending. And that endeared himself to millions of people who didn't like him before.
I think those injuries at the end of his career really changed him and made him a different person, for the better. It's such a shame that his life was lost so early because he was only just then reaching his real potential as a person. He would have been one of the greatest motivational speakers in the history of the world. RIP Kobe
