It had the same effect on me particularly from the point of where he was considering selling his much loved boxed loco. A few months ago I sold my GWR engine with it's associated wagons and then my HS 125 set. I was torn between thinking that it would be better if someone else could have a chance to get some fun from it rather than just be sitting idle as it had been for over 30 years and holding on to them if only for sentimental value. I expect that there will be many times when I wonder for various reasons if I did the wrong thing in parting with them.

A very moving film - about a very moving subject: Hornby Trains. My father, a professional Railwayman - who also kept Bees next to the LNER line during the War - gave me my first Train Set in 1938 - a clockwork 0-4-0 'Special' Goods and an oval of track. One day, in 1940, my Father took me to London from Welwyn Garden City (where we lived throughout the War) by train and who should we meet on the train but a friend of my father's, Sir Nigel Gresley. My father introduced me to him and he asked me what I thought of his engine which was pulling us - it was indeed an A4 - appropriately named Sir Nigel Gresley! I gave him an honest five-year-old's answer: "It's very dirty!" He said that was because they couldn't get enough engine cleaners during the War! He remembered the occasion though for in the Post, stamped with two joined red 1d. Postage stamps and dated ENFIELD 25 DEC 1940 was an ex-works postcard of his engine. On it he had written "With best wishes from Sir Nigel Gresley". I still have that card - which is why I can quote all those details - and I still have my 0-4-0 Tender Special Goods train - but not in its box. In 1946 we moved as all professional Railwaymen move to Peterborough and I became a Chorister at Peterborough Cathedral. We choirboys were given the use of one of the Precinct houses as a hobby room. There we all brought our Trains - all '0' gauge, of course, and all Hornby. I found my 'Special 0-4-0' engine in need of some repairs. So I sent it back to Binns Road and in short order it was returned, repaired and 'new-looking'. We used to have a wonderful time playing trains in the Precinct! Now I am retired - but still enjoy my 'Daddies' trains - as we called them. I noticed, in your moving film a sequence on the Down platform of Sheffield Park Station that I know well - being a Life Member of the Bluebell Railway - but currently unable to get there due to 'Lockdown' . Your readers will be very interested to know that every year the Bluebell Railway has a 'Collectors Fair' on its Station Carpark at Horsted Keynes. So I have diligently added to my collection of '0' gauge Hornby and have a splendid clockwork 4-4-2 LMS Tank engine No.6954. and many other Hornby items as well such as 'Long Buffers' and double-track etc. Being 'an oldie' I have many memories but here I will stop. Oh- thanks for the splendid "Hornby Book of Trains - the first One Hundred Years" Pity about the terrible spelling mistake on page 167 though.

Well done Hornby. Being born in 1944, I can relate to this video maybe more than some people because of my age. I was 10 yeqrs old when my dad bought me a second hand Hornby Dublo train set with Sir Nigel Gresley, because he couldn't afford a new one. After joining the navy at 17, I gave up playing trains and it wasn't until twelve moths ago, I decided to build a model railway again in my shed, to keep me occupied in my retirement.
It brought back some nostalgic memories of the early days.

My grandfather bought a Triang blue Pullman set for me before I was born. He gave it to my Nan who stored it in the airing cupboard of her pre-fabricated house in Streatham, London. My Grandfather knew he would have a grandson one day but may not live to be around to meet him. His prediction was sadly correct and he died before I came along. I always remember as a very young child seeing the familiar red box with the yellow text, nestling in amongst the neatly folded blankets. I never knew what was really in that box but knew it was something very special. It became all too apparent as one day I was given the red and yellow box containing the beautiful Blue Pullman set my grandfather had bought. “Your grandfather bought you this, he wanted you to have it one day” my Nan said with tears in her eyes.
That familiar packaging stayed with me as a boy growing up and was to be the foundation of my love for Hornby model railways. I’m 53 and often wonder what my grandfather would make of it all now. I would love to thank him for my introduction to model railways.
This video inspired me to tell my story and I’m sure there are many more like it throughout the world. Well done Hornby on bringing back the nostalgia that many of us feel today. Thank you!!

My early memories of model trains were getting plastic g scale train sets and generic plastic ho sets. As a kid I loved those things. Into elementary school I got a Bachmann HO Chattanooga set and came into possession of an Athearn SD40 I couldn’t run because it was DCC. Finally in 2014, my mother took me to a train show in the fall and I walked out with an n scale ATSF F3 and a UP bay window caboose. Over the years I’ve collected and keep collecting all sorts of n scale and I’m a massive fan of the scale and the hobby of model railroads.

I live in America 🇺🇸 and I have a thing about trains. I sometimes watch old train commercials from the 50s through the 80s and I sometimes wished the company's would bring back some of their old trains or sets from back then as a company promotion. But I'm glad Hornby is still making ad's like they did back when it was still popular and its still popular to this day. All i could say is don't stop and keep going strong no matter the weather.
