Why Would DJI Delete This Amazing Return to Home Feature?

- DJI has officially removed a special return to home feature that I used pretty much every time I flew my drone. It's not just a feature that I used, but it's a feature that was AMAZING!
What would possess DJI to make this change? I don't know but they still haven't listened to us when we tested this out a few months ago. We proved this return to home feature was removed yet they still didn't listen and bring it back.
Well, we had a lot of comments from that video giving us suggestions to try and maybe the return to home feature would return. That's what today's video is all about. We are going to give it our best shot to see if DJI totally removed this feature from the DJI Mini 4 Pro or if it's a fluke... Mini 2 vs Mini 4 Pro!!! Let's get this going!

Lol from what I hear we are out of luck totally with the mini 4 pro, but someone mentioned they’re in New Zealand and they could control height with the Mini 3 pro. That would be interesting if that’s the case, eh?

Lol yea I forget those antennas pretty often. Ok I forget them all the time. Ever since I put that controller cover on they’re kinda hidden from view so I don’t think about it. I don’t go out far enough normally with the mini 4 pro to really lose any signal though so I’m not too concerned about it. Plus if I lose signal, the return home would kick in and it would all be good. Thanks for watching, Doug!!!

That is a different type hood you have on your DJI RC controller. Where did you get it? Looks like it is a protective cover as well..
Oh heck yea man. It’s really turned out to be a great accessory. Helps with the sun a little bit but I like it most because it protects the sticks in the case. Here’s a link to something similar on Amazon. The specific one I have isn’t available at the moment apparently. Lol.

Lol we may get a lot of wind in Florida this summer with the projected (probably sensationalized) hurricane forecast. We flew in a tropical storm once. That was fun. Lol. Bring it on!

Lol thanks, buddy. We aim to please. Most times we miss. Hahaha. Well your question is more than just a me or her. When we first started she edited them all but she started teaching me stuff along the way and I’ve sort of taken over editing. We split it sometimes though. If there’s anything cinematic or something that needs some creativity, thats 100% her. If it’s a simple drone test like this one that doesn’t need any real editing, it’s me. Haha.
Another good test session Kev. So, the only thing we still have control of while in RTH is the gimbal. At least we still have that, but I miss being able to look around on the way home.
BTW, I launched from my deck around midnight last night, looking for more Northern Lights, which was a wash. But even though I sent Hope straight up, when I hit RTH, she had drifted and started coming down in a tree! Thank God and DJI for the landing light! Since the sensors don't work in low light, she wouldn't have stopped! Fortunately, I saw the tree branches on the screen and canceled RTH. I had the strobe on the top, but I need to put it on the bottom, as I couldn't see her until the landing light came on! Whew!
Lol yea man another somewhat pointless test here. Hahaha. That’s crazy Hope is following suit with Faith. But I guess that one makes more sense since it was dark. I bet it’s tough flying at night there. Our trees aren’t nearly as big as yours and we don’t have any elevation to contend with. Good thing you have that eagle eye eh? Lol
@@WeretheRoberts Well, no room on the bottom, so I ordered set of 4 multicolored LED strobes for the arms. Then I'll keep the main strobe on top. All the flashing LEDs on the ends of the arms go off when you hit RTH, and I couldn't see a thing in the dark! Then I noticed those tree branches getting real close!
BTW, when flying low over the ground through the woods last week, I got a little too close to the ground, and Martha said "Landing"! I quickly pushed the stick up, but too late. She landed. Then, a few days later, I was flying low over Deer Creek when I came upon low tree branches just 2-3 feet above the creek, but I was afraid to lower hope to go under them, as I didn't want a repeat of "Landing"! 😱
Kevin, great stuff… now we know that no matter what happens during the RTH, we must cancel RTH to make any adjustments… also when you switched it to Sport, the mode displayed the “S” as it should but I think it was actually returning in Normal mode…

Hahaha poor Martha. I’m gonna try my hardest to keep her alive and we’ll with Jack as long as I possibly can. That 1.4.8 fly app has been awesome and we’ve been fortunate it’s not “accidentally” been deleted or updated, eh? On the RTH flight, I agree with you. I think it always returns home in normal mode regardless of what it shows on the screen. Maybe that’s how the sensors come back on?

Lol yea that was pretty funny. A few weeks ago on another video I covered the sensors with the tape and he landed on the ground like that. That’s the only reason I was expecting it but I wasn’t expecting it to be that quick. Lol. I barely touched that stick.
Yes I saw that one also and it was on the ground so it was pretty hard. Luckly this was on your truck bed but it down really fast! Lol I am sure it shocked you. 🤣🤣
Could you try this test for the bypass AR mode in a an area you would need it. And then test with the controller you use with a seperate device and test turning off or removing battery to simulate what happens if bypass still works. It would show if all or just some processing is done on drone 100% or if controller is processing some.
I remember years ago reviewers would test return to home by shutting off the controller. Not many reviews or tests of this anymore. I'd say you could put the mini 4 in an area it would need to use bypass and have a analog fpv camera onboard to record the flight and provide positive video feedback if you were to use the controller with builtin android screen.
Love the idea here, man. I remember watching some of those videos when the Mini 2 came out and we actually tried it. It was a bit nerve wracking but it worked like a champ and I was so impressed we bought a 2nd Mini 2 later on. Lol. I could totally try this with the Mini 4 pro, but I’ve only got the RC2 controller with the built in screen. I’m sure the RCN2 controller would have the same result though as the RC2. Thought you said you were going to turn the AR settings off. Thought if you are in sports mode, the return to home goes into normal mode even though it says sports mode.

Yeah, the Mini 3 Pro has been like that from the start I believe. The Air 3 is also the same. I know I miss that from the Mini 2 and it is nice to yew and change altitude when I was in RTH mode. It would be nice if DJI gave us yew on RTH mode at least 🤨. It was nice to get some different video while in RTH mode🤗. Thanks for sharing and well done as always. Take care and God bless.

I have had a couple comments saying their mini 3 pro still has that function though and one guy is using the 1.12.1 fly app. Maybe it’s a fly app thing? I don’t have an RCN2 controller to test out the older version we fly jack with. Now that would be a great test man! I know someone (you) who may just have that controller. Hmmmm

Lol yea I have a tendency to confuse people. I bet I could have confused Einstein. Haha. Anyway, yea I meant the RCN2. I seem to remember you bought the Mini 4 pro with the RCN2 because you had the RC2 controller with the Air 3. Or vice versa. If I had an RCN2 controller I could use my phone with the old fly app version to test the Mini 4 pro and see if the yaw deletion was a new fly app thing or just a mini 4 pro limitation altogether. I talk too much.
@@WeretheRoberts I don't have the M4P or an RCN2 controller unfortunately. I have the RC for the M3P and the RC2 for the Air 3. If I was to buy a M4P I would get the RCN2 so a person could us an aftermarket app or a larger screen.

Hmm I am not sure what you are talking about. I have all drones of the MINI series, the Mini 4 Pro included. Of course, I have the RC version. I don’t see any features of the RTH is missing. I flew my Mini 4 Pro and Mavic 3 Classic around the world, the RTH always works. Did you upgrade the newest firmware?

No you didn’t miss it. I screwed up and forgot to do that part. Pretty much typical for our videos. Hahaha. I always miss something, right? I can vouch though it doesn’t change anything. I think you skipped the test what happens if you disable the AR bit (where it shows the RTH path). Not that I think it will change much, but it might...

Yeah, that seems a terrible feature to disable or not allow. I know one time I was flying my Autel Drone and out of nowhere, it wanted to return home because it said the battery was too low and it was over water and trying to land. So I had to push up on the stick so it would come back to dry land. which scared the hell out of me, because you would figure with GPS and its sensors, that it would understand that it was over water and not try to land there. But because I was able to control the height, I was able to get it back.
Which if this is true, because I was thinking about buying a Mini 4 Pro, and I love to fly over waterways to try to find new areas to explore and if the same were to happen with this drone, I would be screwed. Which… Truthfully… I would probably fix some Floaters to the bottom of the drone if this were the case. So at least I could retrieve it from the water. knowing that if worst case scenario happened, at least it wouldn’t be at the bottom of a river. I don’t know if DJI drones would have that same issue that the Autel did, but better safe than sorry.
Though it does seem like a horrible oversight.
Dang that’s a huge point you just made. If I remember correctly (and don’t quote me because I’m wrong pretty often) but when the mini 4 pro initiates an emergency landing for low battery, the operator still has control so you can raise it up and continue flying forward. BUT you have to continuously push up because the drone starts descending as soon as you let go of the stick. I think this may be a really important thing for us to test out just to make sure but I recall having this happen once in the past and I was able to get the drone where I needed it to go to land safely. I’ll put this on our list of things to test. lol.
The easy way to fix it is 🤔....fly it home yourself

Oh wow I didn’t know that. I thought it was all just stripped away from us starting with the Mini 3 pro. At least they left something, right? Lol. I guess we could get the same type of shots by setting the cruise control but it was always cool to yaw around on the RTH flight. Maybe it’ll come back one of these days.
@WeretheRoberts Yes I really like that feature being able to change altitude during return to home. With that said, The Mini 2 still rules with its return to home capabilities. Lol! I'm almost afraid to fly it.. I don't think you can get another one! They did away with that little beauty. Now I believe it's the Mini 4k. Do you know if that one can yaw during return to home? My guess is NO..

I was flying My Mini 4 pro I had no problems with return to home. I was able to lower it and move left and Right. I am from Northern Ireland. I am not sure.

Oh wow you lucky dog. Lol. Maybe location does make a difference. All I know is DJI must have their reasons for deleting it but that doesn’t mean I have to like it. Haha. I didn’t realize you were in Ireland. My family is Irish on my mom’s side. Their name was O’Riley and they came to America I believe back in the 1920s or 30s. My sister and her family go to Ireland each year for a vacation. They love it there. Maybe one of these days we’ll be able to visit our homeland. :)

UPDATE! i have now flown my standard Mini 3 and hit the RTH, as it made its way back i could still use the yaw and up/down sticks, just like on the mini 2 😃👍👍, i am using fly app version 1.12.1 if that helps anyone.

That feature (yaw during RTH) is not present on ANY DJI Drone with 360 Obstacle avoidance. How, pray tell could it avoid something if the operator skewed the sensors to not face a set direction during RTH? HOWEVER... One thing you CAN do with M4P that none of the other Mini Drones do is 2 Operator Mode - similar to Inspire Drones with 2 controllers. Set it to do a Waypoints - all MANUAL Camera settings, Then it fly's the route and you are the camera man! - Watch my Friend Reinis at SkyHighFilms do it with the Air 3 - its exactly the same on Mini 4 Pro, except only one camera, of course:

Oh cool that sounds interesting. I’ll pop over there and check out that video. On the note of waypoints, and I may be totally off here, but to me it seems like waypoints is an automated flight just like the RTH flight would be. If the sensors are able to detect obstacles during the waypoints missions and stop the mission, regardless of the direction of the drone, how come they can’t detect obstacles on the RTH flight if you’re moving the yaw? I think it would be ok and DJI just wanted to take something away from us maliciously. Lol. I’m kidding about that of course but don’t you think it would still work? What you think?
That was a cool video man. I have a couple questions. He got a message saying “failed to load safety data” and it kept popping up. What does that mean and is it something that we need to know about and also, was he moving the yaw of the drone and the camera when the waypoint was in operation? I saw his fingers on the stick but I couldn’t tell if he was yawing or if the waypoints was doing it. Awesome info, John!

Honestly who cares! If you want to control it then pause the RTH and fly it. If you want it to return to home then let it RTH.

Lol. Whew that’s a relief. I’m glad the RTH hasn’t been deleted. But that’s not what I was talking about. There’s a feature within the RTH function that’s been deleted or disabled. Did you watch the video?
@WeretheRoberts the only function with RTH is to return to home automatically, there Was never any other feature
