The Four Seasons ~ December 1963 (Oh What A Night) 1976 Disco Purrfection Version

- Dedicated to my favourite Detroit radio DJ Dick Purtan. You made my high school years memorable.
Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons had a blazing trail of hits in the early to mid sixties with "Sherry", "Big Girls Don't Cry" and "Walk Like A Man" but the hits had trailed off by 1974 when Frankie and the Seasons were signed to the Motown label. His #1 single "My Eyes Adored You" was not considered a hit after it was recorded and Motown declined to release it, so they parted ways, but it paved the road for the "Who Loves You" LP and their spectacular four week return to #1 with "Oh What A Night (December 1963).
Frankie maintained his status by coming back to #1 with the title song from "Grease" in the summer of 1978. Oh What A Night is their most popular song ever. It was originally titled December 1933 and was about the repeal of prohibition. Writers Bob Gaudio and Judy Parker were not happy with the bizarre lyrics, so they locked themselves away for two days and successfully completed the song. "Who Loves You" was released in August of 1975 and signaled a new sound for the 60's has beens.
Frankie Valli now armed with a coterie of four new Seasons, Gerry Polci on drums, Don Ciccone on bass, John Paiva on guitar and Lee Shapiro on keyboards. Bob Gaudio was a member and writer during their 60's heyday became their producer. The song hit big spending three weeks at the top of the pop heap in the spring of 1976. Despite their fame, they never had a British #1 until December 1963 was released. The song also hit in a remixed form in 1994 by Ben Liebrand, reentered the US survey and peaked at #14 gaining a total of 54 weeks for both chart runs and making it the single that spent the longest time on the chart until the phenomenon of "Macarena" in 1996 bested that by spending 60 weeks on the survey. - Hudba
Old is gold
Love this song! It's still hard to believe that Frankie Valli is legally deaf and still singing every note to perfection. 💗🙏
And 88 years old!
Gerry Polci is lead singer (this song). Frankie sings the hook.

I was a very naive 14 year old when this song came out. I didn't "get" the lyrics, but would belt it out at the top of my voi e around the house. A few years later I understood the lyrics ;)😉 😘

Now this is the Real Old School Jam.
This song is one I like very much, the original, was released the same year I graduated from HIgh School, and I can still see, if I close my eyes, my classmates, as they were then, in the Senior Prom. Good memories.

One of my favorite of all times
Ahhh the wonder years? Puff, puff, hell yeah, homie..
Love this song still listen for it when it comes on the radio
The more I learn about music, the better this song gets. Especially considering it was a "coming out of retirement" hit for The Four Seasons and pre-dated the real disco era.
60s, 70s and 80s songs are the best music of everytimes
On this day in 1975 {December 21st} "December, 1963 (Oh, What A Night)" by the Four Seasons entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; and on March 7th, 1976 it peaked at #1 {for 3 weeks} and spent over a half-year on the Top 100 {27 weeks}...
On April 10th, 1976 it reached #1 {for 1 week} on the Canadian RPM Top Singles chart...
And eighteen years later on October 9th, 1994 a remixed of the song by Dutch deejay Ben Liebrand peaked at #14 on the Top 100 and once again spent 27 weeks on the Top 100...
you really did your homework!
sauquoit13456 WOW thanks for the information. I remember my brother and I going on a road trip from Kansas to Oklahoma that summer of 1976 and he brought along this new 8-track. We were into the Doobie Brothers rock and roll and at first I was like " Four Seasons?" By the state line we were in love with every song and singing all the words..lol. What an amazing talented band. Thanks for posting, ahhh the memories..
ah but what was no. 5 when frankie was no. 1? 😊
For the first week, the #5 song was Gary Wright "Dream Weaver", the second week it was Captain & Tennille with Lonely Night (Angel Face), and for the third week it was Johnny Taylor and "Disco Lady". At least in the US.
I don't know what song knocked it out of the #1 spot, but it can't be anywhere near as great a song as this one
SIMPLY AWESOME 👌
WOW!! Pretty song; a really good oldie but goodie; wasn't even here yet but love it💪😍💪😘💪💪💪

One of my favorite songs brings back memories
Oh,what a re-mix,YES!
Still my favorite Four Seasons song (always gets cranked up when it comes on the radio and definitely has the most plays of all the tracks from their Greatest Hits). I remember this and "Who Loves You" blaring from AM radio and jukeboxes as a kid. Thought both of them rocked (and I was only 9 or 10 at the time), then discovered that the group was the current version of the band responsible for '60s songs like "Walk Like a Man" and "Big Girls Don't Cry". Been a fan ever since.
I was 5 in 1963 😊😅🤪💯❤
La recuerdo concariño, porque tenía 11años y ya la escuchaba, y todavía en este momento de edad madura la disfruto, que cuando era menor de edad.Gracias

I love this song. And I am not ashamed to say that. And I have always been receptive to all genres of music.
I think I hear this song at least once on most all classic hits radio stations in my area.
Hey DJ,your remixes are epic. Sitting here on a Sunday evening with my Disco feet tapping
Great Work
ya but hard to sing to
This song takes me back to when I was a teenager in the sixties. Good old days back then. Just love 💘 the Four Seasons 😍. All there song's are great. Saw them in person back then. It was a good time for me. Saw Frankie Valli in person a couple of years ago and he has gray hair. He must be a couple of years older than me. I had a great time at the concert 😌.
Great Remix
