But why? Unless she wasn't treated right when growing up.
Sometimes parents don't say anything in fear that the child might feel inferior to the biological kids, or so that other family members don't look down on her.
But also we don't react to things the same way, maybe she felt betrayed, I don't know.

Story #1: OP does not owe her family a damn thing. They treated her like an unwanted house guest until they kicked her out at 18, and only ever picked up the phone because once again, they want her to do something for them. _But,_ I actually do agree that helping the sister was more powerful, because now the parents know that OP can take that help away the second they slip into old habits. Which is exactly what did end up happening, only for the parents to not realize that OP was already a step ahead of them from the beginning.

Story #2: In this particular situation, I'm glad that OP was aware enough to acknowledge that he was born in a more tolerant era/location than his grandfather, who comes from an environment where being gay will get you killed. Considering that the grandfather has held these beliefs for over *80 years,* it isn't easy to undo associating homosexuality with a fear of imminent death. In the end, I think it is best that OP now understands that it's okay to love the grandfather from a distance because they come from completely different realities.
