As much as I love Pokemon, I don't always trust the information we're given about each Pokemon in the Pokedex. I mean, the professors are the only ones updating any of that info, so there's no way to fact-check them. Or at least that's how it used to be. No longer will we have to blindly trust the professors, my Loyal Theorists! I am here to reveal the lies hidden within the Pokedex!

Matpat: “Imagine if Wikipedia was full of lies”
Me: Well teachers seem to think so...
Jackwn - Clash of Clans & Clash Royale i thought the same thing XD
They say that it's unreliable because anyone can edit it. If they took 2 seconds to do RESEARCH, they would realise that almost everything is sourced and there is a community dedicated to accuracy on the site.
Even worse is that they change them to prove their point. They modify the data to fit their claim.
It's not that it IS full of lies, it's that it COULD be. Wikipedia is not static, so even if it is "peer reviewed", it can have different information when someone revisits the page and the reviewers aren't always reliable. Even if you get legit facts from Wikipedia, by the time a teacher went to there to check the sources it could have had some of those facts removed for any number of reasons (something as simple as people felt it wasn't too important for the article, which is meant to be concise to some point). Additionally, many English articles on Wikipedia are required to be written in "Basic English" which limits them to 850 different words that have been deemed simple enough that even English speakers with minimal education can understand them, and while that makes it more accessible, it means a lot of important information could be left out because it cannot be expressed with Basic English.
Really, coming from a librarian, those in research based fields DO use Wikipedia a lot, but not directly. Wikipedia is a great resources for finding other sources if you follow the listed sources, and informal research (answering a question outside of an academic setting), even just using Wikipedia will suffice, it's often correct, it's just not appropriate for school because it sometimes does spread misinformation, which is common enough with the internet.
You cant cite something that changes..

A random thought... If Ditto has a set mass(mass can't be created), his weight shouldn't be able to change when he takes the form of a larger Pokemon, then a plain Ditto should have the same weight and mass as a Ditto that takes the form of a Snorelax.
Now Here's a question! How large of a pokemon or object would Ditto have to transform into, until his density, is less than the air around him, and he begins to float?
Please upvote, I'm curious about this one...
Ok, at sea level air has a density of ~1.2 kg/m3. So, ditto having a mass of 4kg according to bulbapedia, means that it has to expand to a volume of ~3.33m3, which if Ditto was a cube would be of side length of 1.5 meters. Basically the size of a Venusaur seems more than enough, to make ditto float...
I've never actually realized how wacky the physics of Pokemon really can be...
So essentially you could tie a basket to a Ditto, have it turn into a Snorelax, and you've got a blimp. I was expecting a larger Pokemon would be needed, but nice to know the actual answer was wackier than I was expecting. Thanks for being awesome! +1
Michael S. If u want a laugh look at Wailord's Dex entry, it already is lighter than air if you do the maths. So get a Ditto to turn into one of them and your balloon could lift a fue tons. 😉
Except... there's a problem. From what we know, Ditto is a failed clone of Mew. No pokemon other than those two can learn Transform, so we can't really get a control group for how it works. For all we know, it's gaining mass from the surrounding particles, or possibly isn't even really transforming at all. It might also be acting in the way ghosts and some psychics do by generating their own gravitational field. If we only count the games, it gets even worse. In that case, Transform only works on pokemon, meaning it might not even be actually transforming. Mew IS a psychic type, and after transforming it *does* instantly know the same moves as its target. It could be entirely illusory.
Wailord, is possibly the least dense Pokemon in the game. I've done some calculations and gauged the length and width (with the height of 14.5 m) to be 33.5 m and 14.5 m respectively.
Since it is more of a flat cone shape, the tail end has a height closer to 7.25 m
Plugging the numbers to calculate the volume of a cone-like tube, you get around 2793.45 m^3 as the volume.
Putting this together with the mass of 398 kg, Wailord itself has a density of 0.143 kg/m^3 which is less dense than Helium.
If we plug in those numbers with Ditto's mass (4 kg), we get a density of 0.00143 kg/m^3
57 TIMES LESS DENSE THAN HYDROGEN. We're talking Ant-Man levels of breaking physics. Its atoms would be too far apart to hold itself together. Ditto transforming into Wailord would not only make it lighter than the lightest air, but literally tear it apart on a molecular level.
Having read some insane entries, it has to be lying, because some entries literally have some Pokémon stealing the souls or draining the life force of others, and yet we don’t see that happen in he anime or games, if the entries were true then training Pokémon would be a literal nightmare. And yet everything seems fine. The dangers really only come from Legendarys fighting each other or bad guys using Pokémon for evil, most Pokémon get along with their trainer and even each other, abs when they don’t it’s not like they kill the trainer, often just use a slightly painful attack on them or ignore their orders.
Turns out the gardavoir pokedex is a warning to the trainers to teach their Gardavoir to not make black holes even to protect them

HUM, ACTUALLY, when a black hole disintegrates, it releases an enormous amount of energy. Black holes emit radiation as if they were hot bodies, but the thing is: the smaller the black hole, the hotter it "is". So by creating a mini black hole that lasts fractions of seconds, gardevoir effectively created a pocket super nova, and since she has telekinesis she could create it in the face of the attacker, effectively protecting her trainer
true that
Except if its as powerful as you say it is then it would effectively kill the trainer and perhaps herself as while she is immune to gravity. Not heat
Billionai this is 100% True but wouldn't that be got enough to vaporize everything else except the spot he/She is trying to protect
Have you seen what Austin does?
If you tell him she can create a Super Nova then he will show why that still destroys the entire solar system!
Good luck surviving after that; plot-shielded or not, that is one dead Trainer.
Mors Admirari: well... yeah, you're right...
Im pretty sure it's an expression about making black holes. Since Gardevoir uses psychic energy, it sounds more reasonable to create a compressed space that resembles a black hole. Plus a pokedex in games seems more like it's observations that the "player" has made when having captured a pokemon. Which is why they are not consistent
True. Crush enough of the correct atoms and you could create an explosion that could level cities.
It makes sense since you were given a *blank* pokedex in (Fire) Red and (Leaf) Green.
Javi Meh sub me sub you
Wow after exclusively watching the new videos for so long that was a refreshingly short and to the point intro
"The pokedex is full of lies"
**Proceeds to cite pokedex for Gardevoir's experience of gravity**
I would disagree with one point... What Gardevoir makes the blackhole from is an important factor in whether it can be useful in protecting its trainer. For example, if a bullet was flying at the trainer and Gardevoir compressed the bullet itself into one of those tiny, unstable blackholes you discussed, would it not be equivalent to the bullet pretty much evaporating before ever getting close to the trainer? While the science is otherwise sound, you are assuming that Gardevoir is utilizing these blackholes to suck in the danger, not making it out of the danger to eliminate it. Same could go for, say, a Hydro Pump targeting the trainer. Compress the matter of the water in on itself, causing an unstable blackhole that then evaporates before it can do serious harm.
i would love for you to do some studying of the Rhyhorn evolution line! Rhydon can apparently shatter Diamonds, for example, and Rhyperior can shoot rocks from their arms like Missiles. Care to debunk those little facts?
Chigger Jester +
If it can apply enough force to the bullet using psychic powers to make a black hole, it could also just stop the bullet, much more easily. After all, it would have to be stopped in the process of making the black hole anyways, or when it evaporated it would just turn back into a hunk of metal flying at the speed of a bullet at the trainer. If the metal turns into a gas because of the immense heat created as a byproduct of the force applied to make it into a black hole, then there would be a cloud of superheated metal gas flying at the speed of the bullet at the trainer. So, if it has to stop the bullet's momentum anyway for the evaporated black hole not to kill the trainer, it could just NOT expend all of its psychic powers pointlessly and stop the bullet anyways.
Brian St. John Evaporating was just an analogy, the matter is being converted into radiation.
Who needs bullets with a word of living weapons
Graestra I agree, the matter is being emitted as radiation, but my point is that it still maintains its mass as well as its momentum. The evaporation of the metal is just due to the high energy of the radiation as a result of the energy applied to compress the particles into a small space, which has nothing to do with the evaporation of the black hole. Hawking radiation is the result of virtual particles becoming estranged from their pair, thereby becoming real, and the anti-particle of the pair having negative energy, thereby removing mass from the black hole. As such, the mass of the black hole is being reduced and replaced by the creation of particles outside of the black hole, which maintain the same center of mass, angular momentum, and charge as the black hole itself. So, a bullet compressed into a black hole would quickly become a hot mess of insanely hot gaseous particles with the momentum of the original bullet. Despite what I said before, it would most likely not become metal, as metal is relatively complex, but it would more likely become hydrogen (or helium if it is hot enough to become a plasma and is shoved next to enough other particles).

Gardevoir may not be able to create an actual black hole, but is it possible it creates a gravitic anomaly that mimics the assumed behavior of a "mini black hole"? In other words, could it use telekinetic force to draw everything towards a singularity, thus mimicing a black hole without creating chain reaction that would annihilate the Earth? In this case, it wouldn't be that the Pokemon Profs are lying, so much as they aren't properly explaining the phenomenon they are witnessing.
warboss5 Aye!
warboss5 but in the game and animie gardevoir's shadow ball is acting like a black hole with out as much gravitational pull but the professors are called the shadow ball a black hole because it is on of gardevoirs popular moves to learn for the trainer
We also have to remember this has a japanese basis, so some information could be lost in translation or just straight up changed for viewing in English
Alternatively, how about just making a black hole that _isn't_ stable? It doesn't need to last forever, just long enough to be used as a projectile or weapon in some form... because let's be honest, even if it's only, say, about a hundredth of the size of the moon, it'd still _really_ freaking hurt to get hit by that thing, especially when the heating effects and Hawking radiation is taken into account.

+pandaluver777 Hahahah you got from Bakugou didnt ya 😂🖒
Gingrish phosphorus on it's fur?
Super friction + whatever is the fuel that supports it's body fire = possible explosions
If black holes absorb light, how are you reading this?
Me: I surely didn't stayed for half an hour to catch that milisecond, don't ruin it.
4:09 I like how he used light from death note as an example lol
The chemistry and biology of Smeargle's paint tail. Do analyze what paint Smeargle produces on his tail and how he is biologically able to do so.
Also how this paint substance allows it to learn any move in the game
Squids.
Also, paint is just a pigment dissolved in water.
You have pigments all over you.
Pretty much all life does it.
I always imagine that is some kind of oil that it exudes from the tail, like a squid. Or maybe it is just its sweat that in contact with its saliva becomes a different color, that will explain why sometimes you can see it with the tongue out while painting.

jammer splash1 The Ten Pokémmandents!!!
I think I'd be really interesting if you went into how Miradon/Koridon may or may not be future/past forms of Cyclizar
So… it could create microscopic black holes. And use the Hawking radiation to create a powerful explosion. In a way it could use e=mc2 as an attack… which is awesom
I love how the title is "The Pokedex is full of lies! (Pokémon) no Matpat, I expected a Skyrim theory episode.
It took me a moment to get the sarcasm
"the dovakin is a powerful psychic pokemon that can use dragon type attacks; his shouts are unpredictable and can have a variety of effects."
radu nicolae amazing
That image of Stephen Hawking as the Hulk is one of the greatest things ever created.
Yes!! IKR?
Agreed
Silphaer I guess You could call him Stephen Hulkking
Matpat : Pokédex entries are a lie.
Also matpat : uses pokedex entires as evidence
Okay this may be a tough one but I would love you to do a theory about which is the strongest god pokemon: Arceus, Necrozma, or Eternatus. I think it would be really interesting to look through things like stats, pokedex entries, and actual feats to find that out.
At least Gardevoir trying to protect their trainer, unlike murderous Haunter:
Silver:
Its tongue is made of gas. If licked, its victim starts shaking constantly until death eventually comes.
Crystal:
It hides in the dark, planning to take the life of the next living thing that wanders close by.
preach it man!
By catching it we're doing society a favour.
So uh...did you guys have fun finding images of Gardevoir?
SoraRoxas528 XD
SoraRoxas528 oh ...Wow ok, I just searched it annnd okay then I have seen thing
Your face matches your comment is well😂
what u saw
GadgetMcfly things...I can't describe well
Bro, it's kid's show. If Pokémon had a bit of science, the creatures known as Pokémon would not exist in the first place.
There's a collection of CZcams videos exploring the pokemon universe but the pokedex is telling the truth. That world is truly a nightmare
Idea: Gardevoir smashes partials and continues to do so, building a black hole and keeping it sustained constantly. It sucks up a person but is not - yet - big enough to sustain itself. 'Voir stops force feeding is partials. It dies out.
I think by the time its large enough to suck in a person entirely it'd be stable enough to not immediately collapse in on itself. If you mean that Gardevoir keeps it unstable but sustained, I highly doubt that's possible as you'd need a constant stream of particles to feed into the black hole, thus making it larger and stable enough.
Unless of course she somehow has ability to add exact same number of particles to the mass as it needs to stay stable. But, if the black hole is sustained artificially like this, it would quite easily start sucking in extra materials (like, say, air mixture around it). So, either Gardevoir 'dex entry is lying, or it somehow has a super-computer in its brain able to predict the future on sub-particle level. Or somehow it can create a stable pin-sized black hole WITHOUT need for any kind of mass and then direct the gravity pull of that black hole only to specific parts, followed with ability to actually dissipate that black hole into not either collapsing NOR exploding. Because hey, imagine if entire moon was turned into energy and blew up?
Also this sort of sustained black hole would give out decent amount of radiation on long run, sooo... Yay for radiation poisoning?
Obviously gardevoir could create said black within someone's brain. By doing so, it'd be constantly fed electrical waves, ultimately giving it the necessary energy and particles to sustain itself and grow large enough to suck in larger objects(the brain tissue, then eventually the actual person/pokemon), at which point it could feasibly survive without assistance.
yall know a male Gardevoir is a thing right?
Honestly the most likely scenario seems to be that the Professors only THINK Gardevoir is creating a small black hole. I mean it's not like they'd be alive if they were dumb enough to get within range required to measure the thing with instruments etc... It's likely just the equivalent of a "Gravity Spell" from like old Final Fantasy games and such. Just creating a super unstable gravitational anomaly that collapses in on itself, but before that happens it is able to suck in an enemy with enough force to cause blunt trauma etc... Because presumably the gravity anomaly would suck them in at an incredible speed, then disappear, causing the momentum to carry the person into the ground at high speed. Kinda like how "Psychic" used to be used in Pokemon like in the Sabrina fight where Kadabra would telekinetically smash opponents into walls and such. Except more potent due to the higher velocity achieved.
And if you think about it, telekinetic powers of sufficient power would probably be able to create something like that. If you telekinetically "crushed" the space in an area down compact enough it would create a pseudo singularity of sorts where the density of the air etc... within the "psychic ball" is so high that it attracts outside objects with enough force to cause my above scenario; and if you assume that the "psychic ball" gives this gravitational anomaly enough solidity you could even just have the enemy smash into the ball itself. This would be more like a faux neutron star or something than a black hole, it'd be like if you were in space and just flung yourself into the upper atmosphere; you'd be dragged in faster and faster toward earth and eventually crash with a huge amount of force, dealing a lot of damage.
So TL:DR = you'd be creating a body dense enough to gravitationally "suck" opponents toward it fast enough to cause them harm.
"Too nerdy' MATPAT
MATPAT THIS IS A NERDY SHOW
I AM HERE FOR NERDY
DEAR GOD I WOULD HAVE LOVED TO HEAR ABOUT THAT
marissa malone IKR
Who is mimicu
BRO IF YOU WANT TO DISCUSS ABOUT HAWKING RADIATION AND NERD OUT ON THAT I THINK THE REASON HE DID NOT DISCUSS THAT IS EITHER HE DOES NOT UNDERSTAND THAT HIMSELF OR THAT IT WILL PROBABLY RESULT IN HALF OF THE VIEWERS COMMITTING SUICIDE DUE TO EXISTENTIAL CRISIS BUT IF YOU WANT YOU CAN LOOK UP HAWKING RADIATION AND ALL OF THE OTHER STUFF YOU NEED TO KNOW TO UNDERSTAND IT ON PBS SPACE TIME
The Pokédex alleges that Malamar is responsible for war crimes in Pokémon Shield. I just like to share that bit of trivia.
I mean, is there no in-between for 2 protons and a moon?
Like a football pitch, yknow, pull the Pokémon away but not obliterate it and the planet
Well, the power of guardevoir would be pretty usefull, because it could just crush the enemy and make it to a black hole, which would immediately evaporate. That would be the easiest win of all time
As long as it doesn't get Crunch'd or Sucker Punched.
Matpat: Calculates loads of things about Black Holes.
Also Matpat: Forgets that most Pokèmon alter reality and the laws of physics to their own will.
The intro will be so much more satisfying when there’s a fourth theory channel the blue one to fill the the last spot
I completely forgot this was about pokedex being Steam category halfway through. I've learned a lot about black holes tho lmao
“If black holes absorb light how are you reading this”
-matpat
By pausing the video just right lol
I just use 0.25x speed
Yeah I just can't stop myself from going back ten seconds and replaying it at 0.25x speed
I saw it at regular speed well puased
@@1Gengar I know right
I just watched a 15 minute video about black holes
...and _enjoyed_ it...
"I just watched a 15-minute video about black holes
...and it didn't suck...
Are the black holes in the movies you're watching body parts?
Ryuk The Panda most of the information was actually wrong
There are actually two holes in MatPat's theory (no pun intended, seriously):
1. He said that Moon shall make a stable black hole, i.e. a black hole which gains mass faster than it evaporates. He also said that the black hole which scientists are trying to create would be microscopic that it would last only 10^-27 second, a very small fraction of a second that is. What he didn't mention is that these two are extreme cases, so if Gardevoir can find a golden mean between the mass of the moon and the mass of the hypothetical black hole by the scientists, it can create a black hole that lasts long enough to suck in some objects and weak enough to be eventually evaporated. In simpler words, Gardevoir should turn that object into a black hole which is lighter than moon but heavier than two protons, and this "balanced" black hole would let it protect its trainer.
2. Hey MatPat, you just tried to find the flaws in Gardevoir's Pokedex entry. Your theory is that the Pokedex is full of lies, so why didn't you find lies in Pokedex entries of other pokemons??? Just because one Pokemon's entry is incorrect doesn't mean that's the case with all of them.
This guy could be a good teacher. I don't want him to become a teacher or we wouldn't have videos.
Like Machamp in Pokken, I'd love to see Pokemon show some of these in games or shows. Maybe not the insanely dark ones involving death. Show us Drampa though that'd be neat
the vid: the pokedex full of lies
matpat: *talks about only black holes*
me: what about the others?
