  • I purchased a Rikon 8" Slow Speed Grinder as a new addition to my new workshop so that I could get back to using high speed steel tools regularly. In this video I go through the unboxing, setup, and my sharpening a few wood lathe tools.

thanks for showing how to remove the wobble from the grinder. I just bought this grinder and the wobble is insane. Time to go see if I can fix mine now.

Great video and it's very clever to adjust the balance of the wheels in that way.

😢 I wish you would have gone slower on the part to mount the tool rests. That is the part I cannot follow very well in the manual. You sped up.

Even if the low speed grinder is used primarily to sharpen, do you think it is also capable of doing some general grinding tasks as well?

Yes, you could do general grinding tasks with it but with much slower performance than a high speed grinder. Rather than wear out one's nice sharpening wheels it is probably best to get a separate high speed grinder with coarser wheels to do general grinding work

can this be used to sharpen kitchen knives or filet knives?

A bench grinder, even a slow speed one, would be too aggressive for sharpening knives. A bench grinder eats away at metal pretty quickly and generates a lot of heat, two things you don't want when trying to get a fine knife edge

Seems to me this grinder should come from the factory without wobble.

It was certainly usable as it was out of the box, but yes, I agree it would be best if the factory spent more time during the initial assembly to reduce it more
