The guided tours can be quite expensive. they charge several thousands per person. if you're a party of 3-4 people, that can quickly rack up. Another option is to call one of the local taxi companies and get a quote for a price for an hour or two driving.
If you really want to lifehack it, you wait until a moment when there are many taxis piled up ontop of eachother on the main plaza, that means buyer's market, start with the first taxi and ask him for a quote for 2 hours of northern lights hunting in and around tromsø. He might try and pitch a rediculous price, along the lines of what the guided tour busses charge, but the rates should be no more than 75 euros per hour.
You might even get it lower than that if you ask around a bit with the other drivers. the driver in the back of the queue has the least amount of sunken investments and will be able to take you for less money than the one in the front. but you got to ask for a quote, otherwise he just slams on the meter and that can run wild once you drive more than 10 kilometers.
Just remember. knocking on the window of a taxi is free.

Sorry, but that pronunciation of Tromsø is waaaaaaay off. The ‘Trom’ part of the word is pronounced as if you would say ‘Trombone’

    Trom-sir. Not Trum-sa. I suppose I say to-mah-to, you say to-may-to
