  • It's a special feeling to pay tribute to Vidushi Sunanda Patnaik through this cult song "Jeevana Patra" based on Raag Bhairavi. Some experiences are memorable and can't be expressed through words. This is what I felt when I met Sunanda madam and sought her blessings. Few of those precious moments I shared at the end credit. Hope you all appreciate my effort.
    Thank you,

    Lyrics of the song:
Jeebana patra mo bharicha kete, mote
Na dela kichi boli kahibi ke he! aau……
    Jeevana priyatama! haricha mo bharama,
Tarani mora taba sagare bahi jaau…..
    Meaning:
How can I grieve and complain to you that you have not given me many things my Lord......
When you have filled my empty bowl with so much more.....
Oh my Beloved.....you have diffused my confusion....(God)
Please let my raft now sail through your ocean.
    Kulara janaprani kete milaa aani
‘Nayana palaka re luchaa aa jani jaṇi…
Brutha mu abhimani hṛude daradi ṭaṇi
Marata prabasi mu na jaṇi aane daau….
    Jeebana patra mo...................
    Meaning:
You make the people come together,
All my friends, relatives, you cause their meeting with me.....
and as soon whisk them away with one batting of eyelid...
In vain I keep sulking in grief,
But foolish...me in my intellectual arrogance, keep them tied to my bosom.... Lord...I am just a poor soul in this material world..do not know Your ways....
Manasa hansa mu manase jibi uḍi
Bharame abirata mo dose patha huḍi….
    Chaḍibi dure jibi, parabare bhasibi
Langhi himagiri jibi go beḷa thau….
    Jeevbana patra mo............
    Meaning:
A swan that I am of my mind
I'll flyaway losing my way in my mortal sins
    I'll leave all this behind
and before it is too late,
I would seek to float in the ocean...
    Gaaibi bandi mu charaṇa bandana
Se lagi e biṇare deicha muruchana…
Se sukha kari heḷa lagaili mu kheḷa,
    Miḷana madhurati pahila chahun chahun….
    Jeebana patra mo....................
    Meaning:
You have given the notes in this veena
so that I could sing in praise of your feet.
    But I ignored that joy
and got lost in this game of life
    And all of a sudden
the sweet night of union was over.

Odiya language is one of the oldest classical language of lndia .lts written form is found in stone carvings of Samrat Kharvel and Ashok in different places of Odisha. This song was written by famous odiya poet Baikunthnath Pattnaik and first sung by his daughter Sunanda Pattnaik, a famous classical singer.

A literary translation of this poem is given here----
O my Lord, you have filled up my life bowl in various ways, how can l complain that you have not given me anything!
My dearest, you have destroyed my illusion, let my lifeboat sail smoothly in your ocean.
While sailing across the shore you arranged many people to meet me and also disappeared them in a twinkle, but with worldly ego l developed attachment with them not knowing that this would bring misery in life
As a Sean with fricle mind l would fly in the sky away from the right path crossing many mountains and fall into the endless ocean. and finish my life before the time comes.
As a prisoner l would have sung your glories by help of your blessed voice, but neglecting that devine happiness l engaged myself in false mundane activities.
Alas, the sweetest night to meet you is passing fast away.
