- Part 2: • Home made watercolors ...
This probably was my most ambitious project yet. I turned flower petals into pigment for painting.
I'm not much of an artist myself (though I'm trying, if anyone knows any good youtube tutorials that teach drawing and painting, please drop a link) but looking around the garden I couldn't resist the urge to capture the colors of the flowers.
If you embark on your own pigment making adventures, let me know how it went. My method definitely has room for improvement and maybe we can learn together.
Much love,
Michaela - Jak na to + styl
Oh, I absolutely HAVE to try this! I'm an illustrator, and it would be great to try to make a picture entirely with home-made pigments!
That would be amazing! Will you link me when you're done? I'd love to see that. When I was reading up they said berries work very well also, so the reds are covered, and different types of soil for the browns. The blues are a bit of a question mark for me. I had high hopes for the irises. They have so much pigment that they stained my fingers as I was picking them, but the color didn't hold at all. Next spring I want to try blue primroses and maybe corn flowers if I can get a hold of them.
I definitely will! I guess it makes sense now why most old-time blues were made with minerals.... maybe flowers will always turn green? I'll have to look into it.
@@Monkeydominator You're so right! It wouldn't make sense to import lapis lazuli from the middle east at huge cost and months of travel time, if they could just go out into the garden and grab a blue bell :) .... I'm still gonna try making pigment from grape hyacinths next spring. Just so sate my curiosity.
@@michaelaschmid Definitely! Keep us updated. might turn a into pretty shade of green!
@@michaelaschmid After boiling and straining red cabbage for blue, you can get it by mixing carbonate into purple water. I will not try it in a short time, but I want to try to harden it with baby powder instead of kieselerde I hope it succeeds.
Oh yeah- you can use beets- they make a beautiful reddish color, blackberries and blueberries for purple and blues, if you search for natural colors for yarn dying you will find a ton of flower and fruit recipes to make dyes and just add your fixatives (I'm a spinner!) 😁
May I ask what you use for fixative? I tried solar dyeing linen last year and the results were... not entirely successful.
Dora Levitt How did you do with fruit? I live in Sweden and I in love with nature a lot.Now I am intereting all about nature.
blueberries turn brown-black with time
Turmeric for yellow, also hibiscus flower for quite a deep purplish/red 👌🌺
Michaela Schmid ive been reading about adding fixatives? One person used an iron powder, I think there are also other alternatives as well!
You are amazing!Just a suggestion...do not add water to the gum arabic. Just use a glass pestle and gring the colour into the gum arabic. That way it stays still more vibrant.
Thanks for the tip! :)
@@michaelaschmid thats right in my process i use only gum arabic to mix whit pigment the fixative is there (1% fornaline)
but the light reaction ideia you gave me is in gum prints i need solid pigment and i was stuck in there, thats why this video help me, finaly i can get my solid pigment from flowers and plants
Very nice
I am writing fantasy and the protagonist is a painter who makes her own paint. This is really helpful.
This was randomly recommended but wow really cool!!
Rebecca's randomness I’m so happy you liked it :)

Art of Gould I’m so glad you enjoyed the video! By the by I just had a look at your channel and you’re an amazing artist!
Michaela Schmid thank you so much! ☺️
Missing footage written is so funny 😂😂
I literally started looking for ways to make pigments SO THAT I can use them fir my sigil magic . This did not disappoint. Thank you for sharing ! Can’t wait to try it
Whoa I just harvested a bunch of sunflowers and I saved the petals, now i know for what!
Amazing I always wonder how they extract those natural pigments. Thanks so much this inspired me to try natural pigments
I hope you do! It's been so much fun and it made me look at my surroundings in a whole new way. There's actually a few different ways to extract pigment from plants (and I'm already planning on doing more experiments next growing season) It's kind of addictive. :D
@@michaelaschmid I can't wait to see your future experiments that's so cool . I'll notify u how the pigment extraction went, I have alot of deep red flowers and hibiscus around my home feeling to extract everything lol.
@@jasonsumair9725 Hibiscus should give amazing color! Please let me know how it went. :D
3:39 My suggestion is to add egg yolk with water (1/2) instead. To turn it into a beautiful and natural old school traditional egg tempera.
I seen the decor around the stuff and I’m like omg is she a witch 😍😍 I was like nah no way ☺️ blessed be
I love how honest and a natural you are. Thats an artist tbh!🥰✨

I love her voice and how she did it the long way to save electricity! She is someone I’d love to hang out with and make pigments with
Ducky Ducks Aw! Thank you! We would definitely have fun making pigments together 🌸
Awesome! For green try stinging nettle. I drink ice tea from this nature gifts. Put them in a pan, fill up with cooked water, and just leave it for a night. This water turns out pretty green 💚🤗🎶🧚🏼♀️
Thank you for the tip! I'll try that out for sure :)
Beautiful. Love it. 💛🌼

One point. Blueberries turn a dark brown color if used for painting canvases.
Very cool, loved this.

Oh thank you!
I took some red flowers from my mothers garden a couple months ago and put them in a strainer for Ink and I tried it out AND WHEN IT WENT ON PAPER IT TURNED PURPLE!!! It’s so cool, I use it for some of my drawings:>
That is so cool! I also noticed my red inks dry blue/purple. From what I read it's the acid in the paper (but I also noticed it happen on acid free paper though to a lesser extent) Would be interesting to find out exactly what is happening there :)
So cool!
Just loving your videos

I'm a baby witch (still researching stuff on how things work, it's a really broad term but I still haven't touched magic yet)
Ironically I clicked on this just to learn on how to make pigments since I'm interested in doing so. But the one that seems to be the best is this one, WHICH SO HAPPENS TO BE WICCAN. AAAAGH. like do I need to be spiritually slapped in the face? ;^;
Edit: I scrolled over your channel and just by looking at some of the videos you've made, I already love it. Keep up the good work!

I also would loooveee an update on the other colours!
E F sadly I forgot about them and they got moldy . But I’m starting a new batch in a few days to see if I can get better pigment on my second try. I’m also trying out different flowers so hopefully this year I’ll be more successful:)
Amazing thank you❤❤❤
Hello again! now I learned that you might been using silica gel, natural color which is harmless!
I am chemist and I know that Silica gel cause a cancer in order to use is a lot as for example you breath around 4 k during a year for example. also it's no allowed to touch never directly by your hands beside who will use this begmint should wear gloves....
Sorry English is not the first language that I use and I hope my words we're clear.
THIS WAS AMAZING! :O
Thank You ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Incerdible!
Awesomeeee!!!!
Impressive well I'm currently working on a project which involves using flamboyant flower and I'm intending on using a similar method
Hi, I am going to give this a go. Thank you.
You have to mull it for it to get its full potential in color on a big marble sheet with something flat and kind of heavy so you can just continue to press it and distributing in the pigment evenly in the Water color
Thanks for the tip! I'll look that up for sure. :)
You're awesome thank 3
You're so sweet! Thank you for watching
With pigments for green, though it's not as powdery I would like, I take the time to dehydrate my plants and process them from then. I use spruce or pine.
I am hoping it will work with flowers (it works for Rose buds if you can tolerate the itchy powder when breaking them apart)
You need more plant for that process, but if you're like me and live with other people, trying this method out might be cheaper and less invasive in the affairs of non-experimental family members. I live in an area with wild roses (east coast Canada) so I'm excited to see if this will work for me this spring
thank you
omg this was such an amazing video
get it bestie
If you wanted to make them a hybrid ink you could add a few drops of food coloring to the liquid mixtures.
WOW...Unbelievable!!!
You can also use walnut oil
I've been meaning to do this project for over a year, thanks for being so smart and creative to put this together. I am wondering though -- my petals are dried. Do I still need to soak them?
You have to mull it first until it turns into a creamy consistency but thanks for this video. Will give it a try:)
Cool
This is helpful thank you
Glad it was helpful!
WOW
Love you from INDIA. 😘😍
Love you, too!
Hey Michaela! I love that you used silica as the base for the dye to bind to - I have been looking for an article online explaining how this works but cannot find one! It seems that silica is often not used for lake pigments - is there an article you referenced? Can you point me in the right direction to find more information about this method? Thanks so much!!
Nice..
hey, another question. I understand you added silica. from reading online, I understand breathing it is not healthy. Can you write more about the silica you added, do you use a mask for safety?
From pharmacy prespective, it is a very light powder, so it easily flies, also static, so it will stuck on your spoon. Once it is wet it won't fly anymore. You could cover your face with something, it is a good idea, but also I don't think this is that big of an amount that should worry you!
(On dayly basis we don't wear a mask, but also use just a few spoon of silica at a time.)
And this is does not look like the silica I'm talking about. That is Aerosil= looks cloud like. Hers is a much heavier powder- I think it rather is somekind of clay. She described it in another comment.
MJBpeace
Where can I find this type of silica or what is it called, I can’t seem to find it online. Can I get it on Amazon?
Hello, i'll try to answer this for you. English isn't my native language either, it's german - just like the Uploader of the Video (at least i think so, based on the label of the "silica" bottle).
Anyways, Kieselerde or what they called Silica, is "Diatomaceous Earth" - so it's non toxic in small doses and used in various ways such as diy-hairproducts, facemasks, or even added into food. (It kills bed bugs as well, still its nontoxic!) It also helps with a hurt stomach and many more problems.
You see, it isn't needed to use a mask (at least if you handle it nowhere near a leafblower) & absolutely worth to give it a shot before using chemicals :)
So, I thiiiink it's a translation error!
To make sure you can do your own research: It's called "Silicea terra" in latin. Make sure to ask in a drugstore for further information and more education, pretty sure that they know more.
Have a pretty day :)
actually do be careful cause diatomaceous (silica) earth can hurt your lungs, a lot of products will have warnings for it and i think you guys should be careful too "In addition to these problems, the diatomaceous earth can cause skin irritation and dryness. It can irritate the nose and nasal passages during the breathing. In case of large amounts inhalation, it can contribute to coughing and shortness of breath." please be careful if you do use diatomaceous especially if you have sensitive lungs!!
@@riza.1310 thank you! :)
Where do you get the silica to add to the alum? I tried to add washing soda to my rose mixture (which turned reddish after I added the alum), and it turned green!
I want to try it with the silica to see if it turns out better.
So cool love the way the colors came out!
Hello, I would like to know if this pigment could be used in the realization of an interior in lime plaster ? Thanks in advance ! Love
Can I use this method for dying fabric.
Thanks 😊
If you want a better end result Try putting the powder and slowly adding water to the point of a Paste and keep adding your wet ingredients until you get your desired consistency.
Yeah, I have a bit of a heavy hand when mixing and I should work on that 🌸
I’m trying to figure out where I can get this silica powder cause I can’t find it anywhere! Other than beads and “bamboo extract”
Add red wine to make it have stronger red tones
I Have no alum in my area. What alternative thing can I use?
I think I missed something did you add the alum as you boiled or after you strained it?
Exactly what type of Silica did you purchase? is it fumed silica, precipitated silica, or something else? There are so many options online
What is the white thing u put in it? As fixation?
Question, how can I take the Fructuos out of if I make pigments out of beets
Hello! love your video. did you mean Potassium Alum to add?
If, instead of water and the other thing you added to the pigment, i add linseed oil will it become oil paint???
BTW love the video
That's how oil paint is made, right? I haven't tried it, but I assume that would work.
@@michaelaschmid Ok thank u😊😊
Yep. The gum arabic is the most common binder for watercolor paints, linseed is the most common for oils. Though usually paints are mulled (by machines or with a muller on a glass surface if by hand) as opposed to mixing in a dish.
Its easier to make more paint since the process is rather long and most 'recipes' of pigment to binder are figured or calculated for that way of paint making.
What powder white do u use?
can someone send the link for silica powder...btw great work💚💙
This looks so fun! Sadly I don’t have that many jars for all my pigments, what is the brand you used? Thanks, much love❤️
They are re-used jars. I think I bought veg stock in the tall ones and pickles in the shorter one :)
Hey what can i use instead of silica
if i were to dehydrate the flower petals by leaving them in the sun, then crushing them could i get a fine powder? i’m trying to look for a way to make my own powder to mix in with oil or egg whites to make paint. but those things in the video aren’t accessible
Gum Arabic is the best way to bind into paint. But I’m sure there is a oil that can substitute decently as well, maybe try some honey and play with texture. Sun drying will change color, I recommend leaving out in the sun, but inside on a table or something so it doesn’t burn. Hope that helps! Just play around a little. Make sure to add a preservative oil to!
Use Linseed oil
i do not have any blue plants or blueberries what should i do?
iris probably turned green because the pigment is a type of anthocyanin. Anthocyanins are pH sensitive. They are normally blues but will turn green-brown at a high pH and can turn magenta-pink at low pH
That makes so much sense! Thank you! I guess I should have paid more attention in Chem class 😂
where do you use the alum and how do you use it?
Wow! Just amazing!! I love watching you make the color pigments! But can honey be substituted for alum??
I've never tried it, but I doubt that would work.
You can add hine a photo light for quicker evaporation
Oh that’s a good idea. There’s lots of ways to speed the process up, like a light as you said, or a wider pan. That was my first attempt and there’s a lot of space for improvement:)
Dehumidifier/ dehydrator might work too
What do you do with the cooked flowers residu? Can you also make something out that? I love the leftover color!
That went straight on the compost, but you're right, it's so pretty. I should come up with something to do with it
