As a new player (4-5 months) i love this banter lol...it's definitely marketing strat on his part cause it is literally the only game he plays i think.. but I think this game has def had excellent runs over the years (after talking to friends who played since D1) and the future always looks bright especially with the witch queen hype answering

The two best expansions we’ve had were Taken King and Forsaken, but they were in rough waters and benefited greatly from such a revival.
It’s kind of crazy to think we’re in unknown territory in the fact that we’re been coasting along great and we’re about to hit the top of the mountain after already being partway up. I’m excited!

The last boss experience will depend on your blueberries. Apparently, I found out you can WIPE if your team decides not to DPS lol.

Datto I fully agree, I think a “solo” player is far more likely to succeed on a personal level in freelance trials than soloing in regular queue. I sometimes even find myself enjoying it more, or at least being less stressed, than playing with friends where it can be a stressful and rage-y environment.
True. I ain't the best player, but still managed to get my titan and warlock flawless in the last solo only que.
Never could I see myself getting the same outcome unless stacked. And Def not in solo que in normal match making.
I think, in essence with beyond light, Bungie has broke the "they gotta get it right this expansion" loop, where every yearly expansion had to save the game. Bungie has perhaps created the most cohesive story year in the franchise. The game is as mainstream as its ever been. They no longer have do or die expansions or seasons, they've finally hit the consistent "this is really good" kind of thing and it looks like things are only improving with witch queen with subclass overhauls and 2 dungeons AND 2 raids in a single year. And They've finally (looks like) built the pinnacle campaign experience with legendary.
I agree that this has been possibly a first, full, good year, but 7 full years and there have only been 2 "gotta get it right" releases, maybe 3. Rise of Iron didn't have to save Destiny. Shadowkeep didn't have to save Destiny. But people see Taken King and Forsaken as that.
I definitely don't disagree but I will say Beyond Light was extremely controversial and probably more in the "okay" category rather than in the "very good" category. Bungie's therefore still a bit inconsistent and truly great expansions are very, very rare. In the last seven years, I'd say ONLY TTK and Forsaken can be lumped into this category.
@@Set451 Nah Rise of Iron did have to save Destiny at that point. I love Taken King as much as the next guy but the content drought was fucking rough after the April update. There was not a solid update for Destiny content in over 5 months. If Rise of Iron had been bad, the game would have lost a lot of players, especially if it wasn't bolstered by Age of Triumph and the announcement of D2.
I would argue the last “make or break” expansion was Forsaken. Sure there have been some low points since then but never low enough to threaten the games “life”. D2Y1 was one of the lowest points in the franchise and it’s been relatively fine ever since Forsaken

To see Datto this excited also makes me quite a bit excited for the future of Destiny. Ever since season of the chosen and I guess partially since Beyond light, things started to become consistent, content, loot, story. If bungorino can keep this up, we'll probably be in the best year yet.
I started playing Destiny right before Shadowkeep came out, and to me this season was by far the best. Obviously it was suuuper long, but the 30th Anniversary Event was such a nice boost to this long season. I am pretty sure this was the most amount of Destiny I’ve ever played in a single season.
The absolute victory bungie managed to pull of this year is amazing. To have a year this good followed by an expansion thats likely gonna be even better leading into an another year of equal quality with two raids and two dungeons is truly the beginning of destinies golden age

"This is the most optimistic I've been about Destiny" has never been more true than right now. With Joe at the helm, the game feels like it finally has time to breath and grow. The story telling is far more superior than its ever been, loot has been good, they actually give valid reasons to nerf shit as well as buffing shit and overall Bungie feels like they have some serious freedom and life in them. I'm cautiously optimistic going into Witchqueen but I have a feeling Witchqueen will be on par with Forsaken or the Taken King.

Leaving a comment here after commenting on the initial reaction to the season. Hearing datto this excited about destiny is absolutely incredible, I’m so very excited for destiny going into year 5, and I’m glad you are too. See you in the new expansion!
With the whole few month gap the idea of bungie doing the final mission when the other missions were being released made sense with the 3 month ish gap that could be a story explanation if savathun spent this time getting the light and makes a grand return.
A second idea is bungie would’ve spaced the missions but weekly like you do the alignment next reset shattered realm next week alignment, and so on. This could keep the story somewhat fresh over the extended delay
I believe that the biggest take away from the primary ammo change made bows way more viable in end game activity.

I have never been this optimistic about Destiny, my thoughts right now are that if this year is as good as last year I'll be happy. BUT, everything right now looks like it will be better than last year, so here's to hoping for the game we all love being the best it can be!

When beyond light was coming there was a LOT of skepticism but with witch queen there is zero percent of it people have never been as hopeful as they have now
Tbh I personally thought Season of the Lost was not bad. It was pretty solid and brought a lot of cool stuff like stasis weapons such as vulpeca. Not to mention the Astral Alignment weren't that bad and the shattered realm was pretty awesome since it was filled with a lot of secrets. The story was also pretty okay I was a bit disappointed with the Exocerism quest due to it being a bit bugged but nonetheless not a bad season I loved the story and the character development of Crow and the unique exotics that it brought :)
All the Lost weapons are ass tho

I know a lot of people bitched about the season being so long, but I appreciated that I didn't need to worry about FOMO during the busiest time of the year. I was able to take a break and focus on myself and my projects

Beyond Light started slow, but the pace has picked up and we are (possibly) about to enter the most optimal year of the Destiny Franchise. I haven't played Destiny this consistently since Forsaken and it been a blast this year. Battlegrounds, presage, expunge funny moments, GM farming, Vault of Glass remaster, and Grasp of Avarice are just some of the highlights that made this year so memorable. What a ride it has been.
The follow-up to a six-month long season better damn well be mind-blowing!
Primary ammo changes helped me use hand cannons more. Before, I'd barely use them, and I'd mainly use Crimson when my hunter was underpowered.
Speaking as someone who took a break and came back, I agree things are really going well right now. It's still a bit overwhelming as a new light or returner, but once you're up to speed there is a lot to like. Hoping things continue in this way. I am optimistic the acquisition wont derail any of the current momentum.
Even with this season being so long, I gotta say I probably couldve played it for another couple months even. The 30th anniversary definitely helped freshen things up but there was/is still SO MUCH I was trying cram in at the end all the way until they booted me. The length of the season really allowed me to dig my heels in and deepen my knowledge of the game overall and play with a lot of different stuff. And I didnt even finish my wish list!
Witch Queen is about to be the best destiny yet
Supers are influenced most by PRIMARY weapons, not kinetic. Doesn't matter the slot. Easy mistake to make though, I jumble kinetic-energy and primary-special every now and then
Ager's Scepter has been my go-to weapon. Just so dang good, like holy crap.
Facts! I got a crazy stasis build ready for witch queen tomorrow with the Ager's as my primary. Can't wait to try it out tomorrow

At least season of the splicer gave you a cool unique mission to conclude the questline before going on hiatus before a season finale.

19:50 totally agree with you Datto, the storytelling in these past few seasons, chosen really expanded on the narrative of the Cabal, and so did Splicer with the Eliksni, Lost took a different route but really felt good with the lead in to Witch Queen. The Osiris parts of each season really strung them all together, as Osiris felt distinctly odd, and you saw how that manifested with his decisions and cutscenes
even tho the 6 month wait was painful it was nice being able to take a break from the game and still being able to come back and have plenty of time to do everything I needed to do
Even though I skipped on Chosen, this year felt pretty great to play. It's the most active on the game I've been in awhile-- and the season where I really decided to try and do as much as I can. Seeing Datto this excited for Witch Queen makes me excited for it more than I already was. I can't wait to see what Bungie will pull off this year around, and if it'll make me stay even more invested than I was this time around.

I'm surprised you don't think much of the infinite primary ammo change - to me as a returning player, this is once of the most appreciated QOL changes there has been, I love it!
I’ve played Destiny since the day one release.
I’ll admit, I played Destiny 1 for a week upon launch and thought it was one of the most disappointing games I had ever played.
The gunplay was fantastic, the abilities were great but the story and campaign missions were awful. Generally, there was nothing to do in the game, so I left.
Queue the summer of 2015.
After the Dark Below and the House of Wolves had released, this was truly the time when me and a few friends of mine REALLY got back into Destiny.
Running Vault of Glass, Crota’s End and Prison of Elders weekly turned into not only a great time spent together, but honestly some of the best moments I’ve ever had in a video game period. I will never ever forget running Skolas in the Prison of Elders, countless times failing, only to complete it, it is hands down one of my most accomplished achievements in video game history to date.
Then, comes along the Taken King.
Good lord.
What an expansion. Not only does Bungie expand upon the story that had been so unforgivably forgotten in the base game, they introduce infusion, a phenomenal new area, new strikes, real quests, a ridiculous amount of exotics and arguably the best raid that Destiny has ever seen. Not only that, but genuine post campaign missions that made you feel like you were fighting against the taken threat. It comes very close to replicating the feelings I had in that summer after the release of The House of Wolves.
And then…
Nothing.
Besides from a few seasonal activities like the Dawning and Festival of the Lost, there was nothing. Destiny became such a dry game for me I had to leave because there was literally nothing for me to do. Albeit, the April Update came around which introduced a new strike and a variety of new cosmetics to the game, it was hardly the turn around the game was looking for. I think many Destiny 1 Veterans will agree with me when I say that the content drought between The Taken King and The April Update and beyond was by far one of the worst us Guardians have ever experienced.
After the April Update, we were greeted with the Rise of Iron expansion, which promised to explore the lore of the Iron Lords and Lord Saladin, and the threat they sacrificed their selves to contain, SIVA.
In general, I enjoyed this expansion. It was hardly a Taken King part 2, but it explored some emotionally challenging parts of Destiny rarely seen before. The raid, Wrath of the Machine was fantastic. New mechanics when it comes to bosses (looking at you wall zamboni) but also great raid weapons, as well as Moments of Triumph in the summer which brought back VoG, Kings Fall and Crota’s End with some of the BEST armour pieces I have ever seen in Destiny to date.
Then, comes the launch of Destiny 2.
The campaign was gripping. The best story that Bungie have produced ever.
The endgame, however, was awful. Double primaries, the removal of random rolls nearly killed the replay ability of the game, and the master version of the raid only awarding cosmetic rewards nailed the coffin.
I played for about two weeks after the release of Destiny 2 and had to leave again. Not only had Bungie destroyed the game they had built over the last 3 years, they had actively sought to rid the fan base of all that made Destiny a genuinely fun game.
It wouldn’t be until after the release of the Warmind expansion that I returned to Destiny, at the absolute behest of one of my close friends.
Escalation Protocol was fun, but still the draw that made Destiny 1 so enticing still wasn’t there.
I would return to Destiny after the Forsaken expansion to play here and there, sticking around for Season of the Forge, Joker and Opulence, playing and grinding but still not fully enjoying the game like I had.
I would miss Shadowkeep’s launch and it’s Seasons, only returning for Season of Arrivals to be introduced to some great weapons, the champion system, some fabulous exotics (here’s looking at you Withhoard) and some really interesting lore/story beats. I would then stick around through the launch of Beyond Light, a reasonably decent expansion with the introduction of Stasis (Albeit a rather lacklustre season) and it’s forthcoming seasons.
It’s to that point it brings me to today.
Although I have been here and there with Destiny, it doesn’t stop the fact that it is by far my most played game. (Almost 3000 Hours D1 + D2) Having been involved with the game for the past two seasons, I am very confident in saying that the Witch Queen will be Destiny’s best expansion to date.
There are very few words to explain how excited I am to see where the world of Destiny is to go soon, considering the story development of the last year. Not only that, Bungie have taken stride upon stride to improve ritual gameplay such as the revamp to Trials and the upcoming Gambit changes, not to mention weapon crafting coming soon.
This is a very, very exciting time to be a Destiny player.

I mean as someone who returned about a month ago, who left during shadow keep just prior to the warmind drop and then got more frustrated reading about sunsetting and said nope, after returning I've got to say, the quality of Beyond Light on a season to Season was fantastic for what you got (granted I didn't play during each of the seasons) but going back to experience the content of the seasons was great. And now seeing how Witchqueen is shaping up, I've never been more engaged and excited about an upcomming expansion and Bungie really dug deep. I feel like anyone who is on the fence due to prior issues, mistakes, etc...I STRONGLY encourage you consider giving destiny another shot because it's never been better, and refarming guns from all your sunset stuff, is absolutely worth it and feels good, seasons feel bigger, dungeons are really well designed (imo), and though we are losing a couple with witch queen(IE Hawkmoon and DMT quest lines), I have no doubt that upcoming dungeons will be amazing.
I think void 3.0 will fill the void that particle deconstruction and breach and clear will leave behind
Stellaris is my favorite game to start a new save at 5pm and blink to suddenly realize it's 2am. Have fun Datto!
Finally used arbalest and many other weapons . Was a good season . I hardly used bows before legendary and master hidden sectors .
If this had been a normal length season, it would've been excellent. Hopefully if Lightfall has to be pushed back they'll try to fit more content in or add another season entirely
I don’t mind the long season if it means I can encourage my friends to come in and do all the stuff they missed :)
The 30th Anniversary pack made up for the drought tbh. It was effectively a season's worth of content. Therefore our single six month season was effectively two three month seasons.

30th anniversary definitely helped there tbh. This has been my favourite season so far and I've put a TON of hours in this season (around 200-250). I think it was an excellent season even with it being double length. 30th wasn't equivalent to a full season but we did get about a season's worth of guns to go grind in Dares of Eternitt and Grasp of Avarice.
The last mission defending the Techeuns didn't go nearly so fast for me - if you built for a ton of DPS though Particle Deconstruction, it went fast of course, but if you didn't (say, pre-prepping builds for Witch Queen), it actually took a while longer and was trying to fire at the boss through a sea of thrall and acolytes while knights were bombarding you rather actively.

Fractethyst is pretty good for PvE as well. Gives my titan a good way to make a quick lances in combat. Slap trech barrel on it and its pretty decent at clearing majors and bosses when heavy ammo isnt on the table.
The bow with archer tempo and frenzy is best bow in game with drawtime master work, it can one shot red bars in GMs with frenzy active 🙌🏻
The legendary SR gave some pretty good dual perks on the season weapons

Agreed, this is most excited I have been about a new expansion since it launched on PC. It could be the eon-like length of the season but the story has been so solid and so interesting. Also Forerunner and the BXR have been tons of fun

Freelance is the bomb. The only time in my entire Destiny career that I've ever gone flawless in Trials was this season in freelance. And I've been playing since House of Wolves in D1 lol
I’ve carried friends to flawless before in the past so I’m no slouch but I went on 35 game losing streak last weekend trying to play non freelance. Not doing that again.

The only question I have left is about spoiler alert (side arm). It was reissued this season and it was noted that it was not a coincidence for it to return. The flavor text for spoiler alert states "Someone is going to die". We received this weapon before Cayde died and now it's back. So, my question is: who is going to die? Is spider going to die? Is a main character going to die? I guess we'll see in the Witch Queen, but I was expecting someone to die during this final mission.

Might I suggest instead of artifact mods having specific weapons handling different Champs, we got artifact mods like "Primary Anti-barrier" or "Special Unstoppable" mods, so that you can open up what people can use in endgame content

I liked that it was 6 months because then I don’t feel like I need to play to finish stuff when I want to play other games.

This is the first season I have played so it’s cool to see what actually happened during it.
ngl I was extremely burnt out on destiny by the end of season 13, I took a long break and put 1000 hours into ff14, i’ve returned these past couple weeks and it’s been some of the most fun i’ve had in destiny, this is also the most excited i’ve been about the game, time for witch queen!

I liked the shattered realm thing, aside from the time gating. If I can do multiple runs to start unlocking stuff “early”, I’d love that.
Grinding out the warmind bunker upgrades sucked, but at least I could finish them before I just stopped caring about the season. I ran the shattered thing once each time it was new, I ran around and found a bunch of “you can’t do these yet, come back in 4 weeks” and I really don’t like that.
Maybe having an option to grind it out and an option to wait and do it much easier?
