I have an idea for a story. "The Curse of KC&W 725": 725 was a 4-6-0 built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1908 for the Kansas City & Western Railroad, a railroad that ran from Kansas City, Missouri all the way to San Francisco, California with branch lines spread out through western Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada and California. Not long after 725 arrived in Kansas City and was placed into revenue service, It became clear it was a jinxed engine, and had several mishaps. Some were minor such as it's tender overturning in the KC yard, a minor derailment near Wichita, and an incident which it fell into a turntable well in Lincoln. Most, however were serious, such as the time it jumped the tracks and plowed into a station platform in a small town in Oklahoma and killed several waiting passenger, and was in a horrible rear end Collision with a freight train in Coffeeville, that killed it's crew, the crew in the caboose and 20 passengers on the passenger train it was pulling. Eventually 725 was placed on the Rocky Mountain Division of the KC&W mainline through Colorado, where it was mainly stationed in a yard west of Denver and used for shunting , as well as occasional short freight runs into Denver and has a helper locomotive for trains going up what was known as "The Devil's Incline" a steep treacherous grade with a tunnel at the summit.. However given its reputation, it was mostly kept on stand by. For a while there were no incidents and 725's exploits were mostly forgotten, that is until the fall of 1922. 725 was resting in the round house when the yardmaster came up. The engine for the "San Francisco Limited", The KC&W's flagship express train had suffered a breakdown and a replacement was needed. 725 was the only engine available so it was placed at the head of the train. 725 bravely worked it's way up The Devil's Incline with the line of Pullmans in tow. 725 soon reached the summit and started steaming through the tunnel. Just as it was halfway through, 725 suffered a sudden massive back draft explosion that killed the engineer and badly scalded the fireman. A spark from the blast ignited the coal in the tender which then caused the fire to spread to the rest of the train. By the time the fire was put out, over 200 passengers were killed. Some were burned alive, others had suffocated from the smoke and fumes, and others were trampled and crushed to death. Only 45 people survived. An investigation reveled a crown sheet failure was the cause. After that 725 was never used again. It was placed on a siding and what salvageable parts could be retrieved were removed to be used as replacement parts for other locomotives, what remained of 725 was cut up for scrap. Today KC&W freight trains still run over the Rocky Mountain Division as well as Amtrak passenger trains, but they say, in the fall when the moon is full the ghost 725 runs along the KC&W main, charging up "The Devil's Incline" pulling a consist of burnt passenger cars, with fire shooting from its smoke stack toward the tunnel where it charges in like a wounded animal with it's whistle shrieking , before disappearing into the darkness
