  • I asked Tommy what action in millimeters he has on each string to know what to say to the PLEK guys. Tommy answered that Joe Glaser in Nashville (who helped to invent PLEK machine) takes care of his guitars. And Tommy does not know anything about particular distances or radius on his Maton, he expressed himself "it should feel right". When I complained on that the action on my TE-1 (1st is 1mm and 6th is 1.8mm) is too low he showed me his guitar and the action on it.
    Special thanks to Mattias and his mother to make this video!

    "We play them we should set it how we like it"..right on. The vast majority of luthiers don't want the challenge of setting action super low for an acoustic player. Sincerely, I'm not bragging at all when I say that its been my experience with luthiers over the years that they usually scoff at the request for really low action until they hear you play and realize your skill level is legit and warrants the extra effort.

    DIY is the best way to set strings action. I know what I want.

    many people dont realize his main axe is basically an electric with kinda acoustic sound. its way to bussy for mornal acoustic action.

    i have my guitar set to 2,4 mm on low E string with 0,12 gauge strings. Sounds amazing, lots of harmonics and sustain, but it's quite hard to play modern style things such as tapping and hammer-ons. I put in a lower saddle bringing it to 1,8 / 1,9 mm , it was very comfortable, loved it, but i lost a lot of tone and sustain, it did't buzz if I fingerpicked, but if I strummed, it was buzzing a lot. I put the original saddle back in and I'm trying to get use to a higher action. I just love the sound to be free and airy. Anyway I don't know what TE means for low action to him. Maybe my guitar with its 2,4mm is a low action for him, even if when he plays harder in this video, I can hear the guitar buzzing a bit near the neck.

      +iLoveGuitar Thank you for sharing it! I'm still looking for "my numbers" and probably should PLEK again but for now it seems like I settled on 2mm on low E string and 1,5mm on high E string.

      2.4 mm is actually very low for an acoustic. mine is at 3.5mm i think its high but action till 3.0mm on acoustic is pretty good for strumming and finger picking both.

      I've heard Tommy has around 1,5mm-1,6mm action at 12 fret for low E string. His guitar is set up perfectly for it, so many aspects coming together for that low action. My Furch is around 2,0mm and its awesome to play, wouldn't mind having a bit lower though

    Its sometimes difficult to find a good luthier or set it right by yourself. I sanded the saddle and straight the neck with the truss rod on my maton EBG 808 artist. No buzzing needs 1.7 mm on low E and 1.3 mm on high e but to be absolutely comfortable for the fingerstyle I need 1.6 and 1.2 mm. But then I have some buzzing once the B string is hit harder on the first 5 frets... its a pity but even the luthier did not make it better. So I try to play not very hard but you cant avoid it always easily.

    How did you get such a low action on your TE-1? Are you just tighten truss rod, or you have sand guitar bridge as well? Thanks :)

      Hello Danijel, I've used PLEK machine service and changed original black saddle to bone as a part of the service. But as I mentioned on video it was so hard to highlight the melody that I went back to the old saddle when I've had enough action and air. I play "Be my Cover" with the low settings (melody sounds weird) and went back to higher saddle on e.g. "Above all else".

      JustBlesser Thank you for your comment! My guitar action is set at 2mm on low E, and for me is really hard to play fingerstyle. Unfortunately we dont't have PLEK service in Croatia. Anyway your guitar sounds great, your skills are amazing as well! Keep it up!

      Thanks for the fast answer, I live in Finland and the PLEK service in Stockholm is the closest. I might go there in the near future, just need to find the numbers that work for me. What did you have to tell them as an input data? Action on the 1st and the 6th strings or on all of them? It seems to be so tempting to make the action as low as possible (buzzing-wise), but I watched "Be my Cover" of yours where (like you say below in comments) the low action on the high strings does not let the melody to "sing". Was it possible to check the action after processing with PLEK and (if you are not 100% satisfied) ask them to make some further little adjustments with PLEK?

    • @JustBlesser
      @JustBlesser  Před 6 lety

      Dmitry Skripnikov The problem was that I was satisfied, I've never experienced my guitar so easy to play on. It came up much later when I started to record that the melody is not speaking. But I would still recommend to try my numbers only with .13 strings. Guys can do anything with PLEK, custom action on each string - easy. I have my input data saved somewhere, will try to find it. FI - you can send your guitar since it can take days until it fixed. Why won't you write to them and ask ?

    • @JustBlesser
      @JustBlesser  Před 6 lety

      Regarding millimeters - check the comments below, it is different suggestions from different people and as I wrote 2mm on low E string and 1,5mm on high E for .12 gauge would work fine for me.

      @dmitry.skripnikov Před 6 lety

      Okay, thank you! Just before writing to guys in Stockholm, I wanted to know an opinion of somebody who already used their service. I am glad you were satisfied! I will also have to check the prices in Gdansk (Poland) because it's the second closest place to me.
