- I take a bow to these guys. I've never heard this intro backwards until starting this video, can't believe I've never thought of reversing it before. I know I've uploaded this before but I wanted to do it properly (Not karaoke style) I can't get you guys a song a week anymore as I have to go away for work, but I promise to make it worth while when I do upload something. Please don't ask for tabs as I didn't use any. Recorded through my Mesa Mark V on the Mk IIC+ setting. Guitars used were Jackson RR5, Ltd Alexi-600 & Dean VMNT. jonny j that's because without the bass they would have had to emulate how it would have sounded with bass. Good guitar tones in a band context will sound horrible by themselves. They're very mid'y and with "too much" high end. But with the bass, drums and vocals everything fits together and sounds amazing. It's the same thing as solo funk players using a ton of muting. That's not something you do in a band context but playing by yourself sounds empty so you throw in another "instrument"

This intro....... Oh my God! This is so epic!
I forgot to add it in the description and I'm sure you worked it out but the first part of the intro is how it was originally recorded before being reversed on the album. I recorded it then copy/pasted it in reverse and joined them together so it sounds continuous. I wanted you to hear it the way it was written. It blew me away when I reversed it in the audio editor and got this menacing German march style tune that sounded unreal. Even after 25 or more years of listening to this album, I still here new things. My favourite album of all time
LambChopper678 Yup, AJFA is a GREAT album. I was blown away when I first heard the intro played how it was actually recorded (the actual recording that someone had "re-reversed" lol) . It's true though, every time I listen to this album (at least through a proper audio-system) , I hear new elements. There are so many guitar-tracks on this album. Actually I think the "procedure" was that Hetfield recorded at least 3 rhythm tracks (left- right - center/middle) . I think he called it "the thickener" (Kirk didn't record any rhythm tracks for this album) .

metalehead95 They originally recorded it the way he's playing it from 0:16 to 0:40 , then they played the tape in reverse, which is the result you hear at the beginning of Blackened, before the heavy riff.

Gives me chills every time. Most epic intro ever. I had no freakin' idea they played it backwards. Would love to know the story behind it. Were they in the studio and someone just tried it out of curiosity or was it planned beforehand. Anyway, I am so glad they did. I also love the forward version, but backwards these harmonies blow my mind.

Easily one of the greatest thrash metal albums. When all band members were passionate and skillful, especially Lars. Amazing drums on the entire album

Jigsaw I've been playing guitar for nearly 15 years and I don't know hardly what chords are I just mostly know where I need to place my fingers on the fret board lol. I only know the basic A, B, C, D, E, F, G chords. Anything beyond that is just power or bar chord to me. lol

The thing he's doing wrong in the main riff is after he does that power chord on the 1st fret of A, he is supposed to do 2 and 3 on the E, 2 and 3 on the A, and then a 1 on the E, but he's just doing 3 and 2 on the E and then doing a gallop on the open E. What does E major have to do with anything? The song is in E Phrygian.

You should totally try one out and tell me what you think on it or look it up. Also, what are your personal opinions on Dimarzio pickups? Do you like them, do you think they're metal enough? The sterling music man is a cool guitar, they have one down at my local music store. Dimarzio's are really nice pups, I have the liquifire and distortion in my San Dimas and I couldn't think of anything better I'd rather have in that guitar. Sounds amazing. It really depends on the guitar though. I tried evolutions in my RR5 and it didn't sound as good as the Duncans and vice versa. They have a unique flavour that I really like. I've never heard a bad tone come from John Petrucci

+Rob MacLeod I have a Mesa Mk V though there's amazing software from Positive Grid that emulates tones perfectly. That's what I use for recording. The program is called Bias Amp Professional for desktop.

Something about when it reverses, everyone I’ve ever spoken to. When they hear that intro, like some dormant beast awakens. We are called, summoned, everyone I’ve ever spoken with says the same. It makes you feel something unspoken. An untethered rage about to explode. It’s absolutely beautiful what sounds can do, and there are few things as urgent, and quite frankly, as fucking badass and brutal as that intro. It will always send chills down my spine

I had a hard time accepting this album.
The loss of Cliff was soul crushing. I feel so blessed and lucky to see him live July 86 in Louisville Ky. METALLICA opened for OZZY.
HANDS DOWN THE BEST CONCERT EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE!!! Absolutely unbelievable stories surrounding the days before, and after.
Maybe another time when I got a good buzz and time to kill.
Then September 28, my best friend Scott, who was with me at the concert in Louisville calls to tell me the tragic news about Cliff. Weird fact. Scott's last name was Burton too. Just soul crushing man. I met Scott at the OZZY Bark at the Moon concert. Way more to tell there too. Anyway, I wasn't able to really handle the fact that Metallica was gonna go on! I was a kid and a real shithead! Now I'm 52 and a real big shithead!
I digress. So I'm out of school doing well, and the Monsters of Rock is going to be at the Acron Rubber Bowl in Ohio. My girlfriend wants to go, so we go. Really easy because I was working in Ohio, so we had a base of operations. The line up was Van Halen /with Sammy, the Scorpions, Kingdom Come, and METALLICA, there was one more band, I can't pull the name out of my brain man, maybe Dokken? But that doesn't sound right. I smoked a lot of pot, took a lot of LSD and drank boatloads of Jim Beam in those days, so there are some blank spaces here and there.
Alright. Back to. This was before METALLICA released The Justice album, and I was still thinking that you know, who the fuck is gonna step up and fill Cliffs spot? When I heard it would be Jason, I wasn't sure, but then they played Harvester of Sorrow at Monsters, I think it was the third or fourth song into their set, I had to give Jason a chance. Glad I did! And I gotta give him credit for stepping into that spot! Holy hell, that had to be unbelievably stressful!!
But he did awesome! And is still kicking ass. His artwork isn't half bad either.

I haven't played for nearly 2 weeks away with work so getting the right hand back in form took a good few days. My wrist felt great by the last take, made me want to go back and start again to make it tighter.
