The doctor’s technique is actually what I did for a class where the prof literally wanted copy-paste answers. I made Quizlet flashcards using the definitions with holes and practiced them everyday. Got an A, don’t remember anything.
Exactly, I have done this as well, and I always HATE it when I forget the Info right after the exam, tbh I rather write bad grades than forgetting every single thing that I've learned and put effort and hours to it.
Same. But I didn’t get a straight A because it was an essay and I only memorized all the Mindmaps to write the essay. The information was right though I forgot about it now half a year later.

What is wrong with the 123 method? She's telling you to summarize a chapter after you read it. This is actually very effective. The only problem is to do it 3 times is extremely inefficient. Instead of doing it 2 more times, you can try recalling the information in other ways.
i dont know anything about this field, even then i knew tht it wouldnt work (for me). Personally, it would just test me on a topic which i barely know. i wanna know how to memo not how to know what i know.

@@morninglift1253 the information is still very isolated and linear. again as Justin said if you already have very deep processing abilities then you might be able to get away with it (doesnt mean there arent waaaay more efficient methods), but if you dont this method is absolutely useless
Used to have a tutor forcing me into their bad learning methods and shaming me for not being able to memorise from them. I came out tough and damaged 👀👍🏻

Something not everyone learnt because content was easy enough intuitively, so they breezed through, not realizing they were missing out on a key skill until later when they meet their first obstacle
Current high schooler here, in math we have fill in the blank notes, English and science aren’t frequently taking notes, and in history the material is easy enough that I would be fine not taking notes. That’s not saying that everyone would, but we’re relearning continents, a first grade topic. So taking notes in Spanish was quite the adjustment for me, and someone who was less good at language and word usage gets much worse grades than me, because no one taught them how to take notes.

Dr Brad's technique - I tapped into something similar a few years ago for a series of competitive tests where we were expected to "learn" the material from a set of premade notes, and then repeat it verbatim by filling in the blanks during the tests. The pass mark for all 10 exams was 80% and if you failed one you failed the lot.
It was a LOT of work to write out all the notes firstly, try to understand the concepts clearly enough and then take the time to memorise everything. It took SO much time to just have to repeat so much info verbatim over that long an assessment period.
Results? I aced each test 95% and learned the information as best I could (my notes can now be referred to again in the future). My problem now is that I cannot recall any of that info easily, and it was a disservice to me because I was unable to learn in my preferred way where I could actually absorb and fully understand the content and apply the information properly again later.
Effective in only the most specific assessment requirements but has zero flexibility and can make your life a misery if you struggle with the technique (like a few of my cohort did).
how to learn effectively ? i mean learn how to learn mine is first i question the information to understand basic , now i apply that to real world , analyze deeply all these step i did by visualizing so that i recall fast and teach information in spaced time intervals . for facts association and imagination . any suggestions ??

@@JustinSung the icing on the cake in that scenario was at the moment we were about to take the final test, after a full week of every evening dedicated to studying and memorising all the cumulative information, the assessors walk through the room and tell us "psyche!" there is no final test 💀😤

Re - your comment about people negatively commenting that you're trying to sell ... I think you just have a different audience. Perhaps, People who are willing to invest time over money. And perhaps haven't yet realized(pecan afford) the value that comes with reducing the time invested and increasing efficiency through $$.
Also there is a mindset shift required to pay for something that is seemingly available for free.

You'd literally die when you hear what some Indian studytubers with thousands of following have to tell about learning it's ridiculous .... it's something like re-read your notes atleast 15 times.... Study 12 to 16 hours everyday ..... 😂😂. Because of the craze for competitive exams students would literally follow the words of topper like it's some magic mantra to score best. I saw a clip of a topper saying she read a book 20+ times over the course of 2 years and you know what some people appreciate this . It's become a standard here that if you don't study 12+ hours or write 3 to 4 copies worth of notes or solve 300 questions each chapter then probably you won't make it .

If we are talking about past papers, yes I can understand, but especially when incorporating the study techniques, you'd have to start documenting when you first came across the information right? I would totally get overwhelmed😳😳
Hi Justin! I am a student who is just found your channel and is loving it and is trying to learn how to learn better! Sometimes I find it really difficult to understand how to apply the concepts you are speaking about, because I am a physics major and the subjects I have to study are physics, math, and in general highly technical things.
I'm wondering if you would ever consider doing a video explaining how to apply all these techniques when it comes down to highly technical fields where you can't paraphrase the information too much, where you need to be able to solve exercises, and how to important is it to do mind maps if the relationships between the topics are already very clear and obvious, and what to do instead to get to the next level?
I’ll try to clarify this topic. Its quite a long answer so i need to find a way to do it in 20 mins otherwise the CZcams algorithm punishes the video performance. I cover it in my program but I’ll try and do a concise summary on this topic soon for CZcams.

14:16 To be fair, you could just put all the info in one chapter in a really small font on one or two pages and completely side-step the need to prioritise information, which'd move you from evaluate on Blooms' taxonomy to maybe understand at best

The issue with “study” TikToks is that retrieval is mostly their emphasis. There is a clear difference between encoding (mental) and retrieval (physical), and I wish more creators would emphasize reading and “learning skills.” The more creators can emphasize these skills, the more we can invest in them, which can likely reduce the amount of time we spend smashing the information through with repetition and in the retrieval stage. Let’s focus on getting the information rock solid on the first go rather than constantly revising it.
@@morninglift1253 ? I said more creators should emphasize encoding and reading strategies than retrieval practices. Never said that there was anything wrong with retrieval.

Hope you can understand the more nuanced perspective from my other videos where i make it clear around the role and limitations of retrieval focused learning systems. How we learn is also a great book! FYI my system was published BEFORE the book was, and how we learn is a neuroscience perspective which is quite different, but I do agree that How we learn is probably one of the best current summaries of learning neuroscience from a theoretical perspective.
@@morninglift1253 while retrieval is effective, people often rely on it too much without considering other ways to make it more efficient. However, I don't see any problem with developing a course based on books. FranklinCovey has been offering a course based on the book '7 Habits of Highly Effective People' for years

I think that the issue is that you are just obtuse.
You can't intellectually bully anyone because you don't have the intellect.
Justin isn't going to amend his videos, so can keep your attacks up.
It doesn't really change much of the research or work he does.
His taking research because that's the start.
He can't just start his system just by itself.
That doesn't make sense for various reasons.
when i was like 8-10 ish we used to have a test (for a different subject) every week at school and to study for those tests i used to memorize my textbooks. except i didn't do any specific method. i just had a photographic memory at the time. or something similar anyway. not sure if theres a different technical term but if i wanted to i could like focus on the thing i wanted to remember and then see it like a screenshot in my head. it only worked if i was planning to remember it when i was studying it (couldn't accidentally remember things i didnt plan to remember so for example when i was reading textbooks i would do it but not for when i was reading a novel or playing a game with a friend). it would last for a few weeks or like 2-3 months if i got lucky. i've since lost this ability and also stopped trying to memorize things to do well on tests because it literally never works. i'm still a fast memorizer (i memorize poems on occasion, mostly to test myself) and if i tried to memorize everything for my finals i would be failing all of them lol

For the Condensed Notes Method, if you want to get a Reference. Some Text Books have a Chapter Summary at the End of the Chapter (it is usually one or two pages long of the Main Points in the Chapter).
That doesn't really help for many reasons.

Best English teacher I ever had gave us a test on all 136 vocabulary words we had learned throughout the year. She said to us “you told me you learned them earlier. It seems like you didn’t really learn them.” She was right, and I went on to learn the words by making sentences and writing songs and poems with the words. I got an A on the test, and I could tell you how to use every word over two years later.

Well i had been using a similar technique which was of just look at the answer and then after sometime write what you know and i can tell that most of the time i can answer the question,
before tests /exams, if i dont have enough time, i would just see a lot of MCQs with answer, and ask myself 1 time (ig its called active recall) and just doing it for 1 time, i can retain 80-90% of the info
Maybe i have deep processing
Currently im trying to follow your method, which is of comparing diff. Ideas Or relating the new info. To prior one, grouping /prioritizing etc. And it actually work thanks justin you helped me a lot, its just that i cant study more in a day, its very VERY uncomfortable for me, its fun studying but i feel like i lost all of my energy.

@JustinSung for your comment on the salesy side of the videos...I believe the reason why there is such a big difference is because of the expectations set by you. If you're sharing "value" content and then once in a while mention your program, it's a massive pattern interrupt and people will tend to overreact whereas when you share it in every video, people just get used to it and expect it to happen 😅Human minds are wonderful that way...

he uses the concepts app on ipad if i'm not mistaken but the app is available on all softwares and you if you don't have a touch screen for a pen, you can buy a drawing tablet (cheap but good ones can be between 30-50 euros)
I must say that technique of creating gaps in notes was helpful to me to memorize certain facts or dates or year but thats it,
It only helps with memorization not with learning or engaing with the information
But if your goal is just memorization then sure go for it

Hey! I know this might be a weird request, but i am planning on writing CLAT, law entrance exam here in India, and its a skill based exam. I've never had much problem with standard school learning but as CLAT as no portions and people just expect you to be the best in certain areas (critical reasiong, current affairs etc.) I am really confused about what I'm supposed to do. Would appreciate if you gave me a place to start with trying to understand how to learn for CLAT.
Moreover, great video! I've found that writing down notes over and over again just makes me angry and frustrated and it's so refreshing to see an actual professional validate me on that :))
Hi I'm not familiar with CLAT but my advise for you is try to debate alot everything you read and write try to say it in your language and expand your vocabulary

I used dr bratt technique literally not so long ago and it went horrible
I tried it in Biology and it didn't help in anything just helped with "remembering" literally only the first thing in bloom's taxonomy.. my highschool system in egypt depends on blooms taxonomy and the first three levels of higher order thinking is what's tested in the exam sooo yeah you Guessed it i got a bad score for that test 😅

im born slower in comprehending and taking in information [ case in point, Junior colleague to Universitiy co-workers have WAYYY faster comprehension of any live action items , vs me, who is always lost in the conversations or topic./ tasks given ]
and what you mentioned at @12:50, isnt easily wired, im just not born with that kind of mental computation in that particular way,
so i can appreciate, free content [ nothing is free, but rather a trade off ] , or paid content that doesnt over promisies but has results.
thus far have integrated mutiple avenues of learning to learn and to understand things, has been boosted pretty consistently, at least, catching myself off guard on dozing off mentally or not trying to ask [ how can i use this , what the heck is the person/ material is talking etc]
like bad fitness advice of " just lift heavy " , tik-tok is really not for advisory relation
and just because ive lifted it like this, it is the only way

It´s really comes down to how your exam looks like or if your subject that you´re studying is concept heavy or fact heavy
Either way i think building a good foundation by seeing the big picture is really helpful
Technique or course there is no best one
All of these techniques are tools in a toolbox
And you gotta know when you use the hammer or the screwdriver
The Fill in the blanks technique is if you really look at it objectively
is really for certain words/facts - nothing out of this world
I tried it but in my opinion it´s not worth the effort neither paper or digital flash cards
My psychology lecture slides/notes have been made of my uni
its a distance learning degree so basically i have to understand it as well as know the details like its written in the slides
The fastest approach and most active for me is summarizing the paragraphs connecting them and either doing a mindmap with sketch notes
or to make paper flash cards but as few as possible - in a way that they´re starting with how and why Q's
the reason so many docters dropped the ball during the last 3 years and couldnt remember basic biology around natural immunity and what "emergency use only" ment: is because they studied random+ fragmented to pass exams but didnt make real connection to fundamental concepts.
That's a totally different topic and even Justin Sung dropped the ball on that.
He recommended people should report people they knew that didn't take the shot or where moving without it.
Hi Justin. I'v been watching some of your videos and I like your methods and explanations. I have alway been a struggle student. I have ADHD and obviously this is why. My biggest problem is, although understanding the methodologies that you demonstrate, I cannot get into it. I struggle to get focused or simply calm the rushing mind. I start with one topic but then my mind flys in all directions. I read words and sentences but can't recall unless I have some picture or something visual as an anchor that helps me recall. I can do this with my studies but I loose focus too quickly. Do you have any tactics that you can suggest for someone like me who I interested in studying but struggles to stay focused or struggles to Not be bored so quickly with their learning materials.
The problem in adhd is you are over imagining things . Rather try seeing things as they are , like don't look down on things nor look up to them...try seeing as it is..to be honest you have created a personality that rates everything wheather it is good or bad...so stop it

hi! just in case this helps i feel like i can relate but i tried to take a different approach. id say follow your mind and explore the things you brain tries to connect things too rather than fight it and try to solely learn it as it is written or spoken. our mind isn't linear and focused like a program going through things line by line. in that sense when i read a sentence about a new thing my brain will go many ways to figure out where to put it taking my previous knowledge into count. sometimes it will skip pages. and it's natural if it needs visuals too. it's really natural for our brain. if we don't follow the natural flow it becomes forced and boring and nothing sticks.
and if your brain gets distracted with things that have nothing to do with studying, it would be good to notice it and try to figure out how to remove one distraction by one in some way.

I want to ask: In my country, the teacher will read a huge amount of informations (like literature) for the student to write it down in line way. How can I use mind map and other techniche you teach in that short period of time ? Thank you
I feel like the thing of people calling you out because you have paid courses is kind of a compliment in disguise. They hold you to a higher standard competence wise which prompts them to hold you to a higher standard morals wise than your average tiktoker.
I also get the frustration as well since information is mostly basically free materially speaking, (applies to anything digital videos, pdfs, audiobooks, software), all you need is some access to the internet and some processing power. So the barriers to it must be rather artificial but you can't really fix that without changing the whole economic system rn.

How about you try to get perfect score in some of the "hardest" exams in the world
By spending least possible time unlike the Chinese "top" students who claim to study 14+ hrs a day
The exams are:
GaoKao (Chinese exam)
IIT/JEE advanced
GATE, etc
It could take a long time to record it and post it but you can do it as a side project. 😃
what are your thoughts on information that should NOT be manipulated? For example, the law demands precision so memorizing each section or article with its proper sequence can be daunting. How do you effectively go about that Dr.?
That is a hard question lol maybe like only on the high level order of thinking and be aware not to manipulate it maybe I'm wrong but I hope JS reply on this comment
Dr. Brad's technique sounds so ridiculously time consuming lol. When I was an engineering student I don't think I would have had time to use his technique for all my courses.

It’s a good technique to memorize stuff verbatim. Just copy paste in a flashcard generator with the holes as the answers. I couldn’t imagine it being useful for engineering though

Actually the doctor method works for me a lot but not precisely the same way growing up i developed my own . First step first time serjng a paragraph is to read it and comprehend it second step is to recite it in my mind or rewrite it wich there will be some missed info so you gonna check up the paragraph and find a way to integrate what you've forgot then rewrite it again it's kinda take time but im good at remembering by rewriting
Maybe its considered a form of active recall where everytime i get the most of what i remember then add forgotten info then redo it until perfectness

The doctor technique is good if you are getting 50 hours a day and have no life or other things to do, except to rewrite NOTES. 😃👍🏻

At minute 08:00 the girl talks about notion AI, but what are your thoughts about using AI to make Flashcards? I find Flashcards incredibly helpful but the amount of time that requires me to make them is just too much. I’ve been using AI to make Flashcards for a couple of months now and yes their are not perfect and sometimes they need to be rewritten but I think they are a good starting point. What are your thoughts about the matter?

I think this is probably fine! Making flashcards manually has fairly minimal learning benefit.

I'm pretty sure if someone tried this,they would be considered the original author of the book before the original considering the times they're gonna write and rewrite the book trying to memorize it before learning it.
I've watched 7+ of your video. You're great on teaching. But I am kinda on a confusion. You are talking mostly about what we shouldn't do(Study Techniques). That's great cause it's saving us from doing wrong. But we also need to know what we should do. And also timestamp. Cheers!!

Is it possible that you can write a book on how to study effectively? I understand you have a dedicated program but I don't have the means to access that. A book however is the most basic and easiest medium to get your message across to as many people despite the barriers they face. Is it possible that it can be implemented please? Or at least considered?
Its in the works but it takes years to write a book so although it’s coming, I wouldnt hold your breath.
