Valentine's Day Themed Beauty Shoot using an Optical Spot

  • In this Valentine's Day themed photo deconstruction I show you a technique where I light a diffusion filter from behind with an optical spot and a gel for eye catching results.
By now you probably know that my favorite new modifier is the optical spot that I helped co-design with Westcott.
For those of you that may not know, an optical spot is a specialty modifier that lets you project specific patterns and slices of light on your subject/background etc.
For this shoot I wanted to do a Valentine’s Day theme but something a bit different with the optical spot then I've done before.
    💡Lighting
The background is a Lee Heavy Frost Diffusion filter which gives me a white background, but the trick here is lighting it from behind with a heart logo, almost like a crown on the subject. What I like about using this technique is that some of the light hitting the filter also spills on to the subject proving this nice beautiful glow. Could I have just pointed the optical spot at the background to get the heart? Sure, but you wouldn’t get that glow. 😝
The second light is another optical spot to create a very narrow beam of light on the subject’s face. The reason why I lit the subject like this is so that I could have areas of shadow on the face that I could gel.
This is where the 3rd strobe comes into place which is a medium umbrella with diffusion and purple gel.
As you can see each light has a specific job!
    🖌️ Post Processing
The straight out of camera was very close to the final image. There were only a few areas that I decided to tighten up. I added a vignette, more contrast, and added a bit more cyan to the shadow areas to tie the colors together.

❤ what I like about the video, Ms. Adler, is your photography, your deconstruction, and you. Not sure you explained the empty space in the video, but the image reminds me of one of my submissions to an exam in photography school - the examiner asked "why the empty space?" Where do you think marketers place their texts with this product - the "empty" space becomes their background.
The exam was about 50 years ago - examiners might not even be inclined to ask that question today, but the awareness with the photographer is important.
Another side-effect of the landscape shot is that it can be cropped to portrait for a front page but also fill a "double page" (which gets more money than a single internal page).

💜When I saw the preview of the final photo I was wondering how you created this white heart behind the model. Mega idea to send the stencil on a frost foil to wrap the model in even more soft shine from behind with the color. Thanks for these creative setups that always open up new angles on creative studio photography.
Have a wonderful Valentine's Day and say thanks for this great video!

  • @kathleenmurphyphotography8515

Lindsay, I always learn something new when I watch your videos. For example: Because optical spots concentrate light, you lose light and need to shoot wider open and with higher ISO so you don't have to have your lights on full power. Totally useful info! I also loved the creative idea of back-lighting the heart on the Lee "vellum" filter. It reminded me of the "bat signal" in Batman, but FAR more elegant and ethereal! And of course yours signals the greatest of all things: Love! As always, your tutorials are clear, concise, and full of incredibly useful, inspiring, and creative ideas.
