Great approach, these machines produce excellent even roast.

That is a bad ass setup. It seems to do a great job. I would like to see darker in one of the roastings.

Believe it or not, I do purchase at times Starbucks dark roast. Not sure their profile but it is consistent with the slight oily look. I just like dark coffee. Hell, I like any coffee lol. I roast at home with my primitive setup but it works for me.

I use to like dark roast but I'm definitely medium now. Have you ever roasted monsoon malabar/old brown java? They have very distinctive taste and are suited to a dark roast.

I drank medium roast for 40 years. I still like it but for some reason, I have switched dark. I still roast med. All is good. @@baristajord

The roast looks great! How many grams of roasted beans does your cooling tray hold and how wide is it? Also can you add a link for this setup? Thanks so much!

Hi thanks for your comment! It holds 500 grams of roasted beans. Diameter is 19.5cm - 4.5cm deep. (YUCHENGTECH 500g Coffee Bean Cooler Electric)

    Hows the taste on this?

Very good not bitter or sour. I'm not a professionally trained taster though.

@@baristajord How does it compare to a Behmor drum roaster? Even as a "cheap" product it's a fair bit of money for me to spend but I've been having trouble getting good roasts with the Behmor and I hate that I need to use it outside because of all the smoke it creates plus all the stupid safety alarms which mean I have to run back and forth outside over and over to press buttons on it over like 30 minutes every few days so I'm considering this one but I don't know if I really need it or just learn to roast better on the Behmor and put up with its annoyances

@@Iridescence93 Hi, thanks for your comment. I'm not sure as have no experience with the Behmor roaster. I will say though the smola is a very good roaster and it produces excellent roasts, full control of 'heat/air'.

@@baristajord Thanks I tried using less coffee in the Behmor last time and got better results even though it is supposed to be able to do a pound at a time mine seems to struggle with that. My last roast was close to perfect though even though it seemed ligh it isn't "grassy" like light roasts on the Behmor often are.
I also have a Fresh Roast which is like a low-tech low power version of the Smola so maybe I could mess around more with that as well
It's cool having it all computerized but I worry about all the things that could go wrong with that with no real way for me to service a Chinese product easily.
I don't know, maybe if they have a deal in their November sales I will be tempted again but for now I think I will just try to learn to roast better on what I have.
Glad you like your roaster though and it's kind of weirdly relaxing watching someone else roast coffee outside so nice video.
