Hauling firewood with oxen in the Connecticut woods

Nancy and Tom Kalal of Cranberry Meadow Farm in East Lyme use their one-year old oxen Star and Bright to help The Day outdoors columnist Steve Fagin haul logs to be cut for firewood.

My uncle was a drover. He took his oxen all over New England, New York and Maine. He had many ribbons for his part in Ox Draws. My uncle was probably in his 40's when he hit all the fairs with his friend. That friend was named Mr. Cavenaugh and he couldn't have been more 5 foot tall and maybe 90 pounds soaking wet. He had 2 teams of red Devons. In those days all the drovers had a whip. Mr. Cavenaugh walked right in front of these oxen. He never raised his voice, just talked to the teams. Watching this old man work his cattle was just a treat. He never hit them in fact, he would tap the horn of one ox with the butt of the whip and the animal knew what the man wanted him to do. Growing up on a farm was the best part of my life. I am from Bolton, CT and I'm 75.
