  • On their second album, recorded on New Year’s Eve, 1972 in New York, and released on India Navigation records in 1973, The Revolutionary Ensemble performed a graphic score by Wadada Leo Smith (see Smith’s later discussion of the piece here: • Wadada Leo Smith on hi... . During the early part of the performance, percussionist Jerome Cooper deployed a recording of Billie Holiday performing ‘Lover Man’: a meditation on technology, loss, and improvisation’s capacity for resurrection, excerpted here.

    so ahead of their time that their time hasn’t even arrived yet. people couldn’t get with the simplicity of this, the space in it, the stark essence of it. it wasn’t like the other *free jazz* that was happening at the time. these guys were just too unique.
