It's usually not that great because then the company will intentionally keep many improvements (even contributed by others) from being included in the FOSS version.

ooh~ FUTOphone sounds nice. All the best Linux phones are scarce in the USA, and most of the good Google-stripped Android forks only work with a limited number of more modern phones. I don't feel like we need an SoC capable of competing with laptops or low-end desktops in raw performance just so we can use a modern camera or deliver decent audio or a responsive touchscreen. But that's how they build them. So people who want nice pictures or large amounts of storage are forced to purchase the high-end devices they don't actually utilize. There's A LOT that could be done in the mobile market that just hasn't been touched on because the industry is stagnant in every facet from hardware to operating system to software. Mobile gaming in particular has been a flop because the market is flooded with cash-grabs with ads and in-app purchases. If the Android & iPhone markets had serious gamemakers at work, all the public would need is a cheap controller attachment with a battery pack to make mobile gaming bigger than the original Gameboy, PS Vita, and DS combined. And that's not an exaggeration. But I doubt we'll ever see that happen.
I am not a developer I am a quality assurance professional who is focused on grc, ethics & compliance, and intelligent analytics using open source resources in parallel or integrated with existing public and government systems. I haven't found a good way to fund my efforts while creating business methods and management systems other than becoming an employee for an existing business in the industry. The business I originally started is being restructured to a 501c3 to manage licensing and long term teaming agreements (similar to what FUTO does). I am starting a separate consultancy to patent my initial research and design outputs. Does FUTO finance these types of individual owned organizations?
Not sure about trust, but we need a push for consumers to own their bootloader keys. Or the manufacturers should not be able to mark it as an item for sale. This is very very problematic especially on phones. You are forced to put your root of trust in some private company.
I have put in emails to the FUTO grant and/or team in the past. I've never heard back, ever. Even if my proposal wasn't accepted, how come I didn't get an email back? I'm aware you have to speculate on the contents so think broad and generically cause what I'm really wanting to know is if I "resubmit" or something, what are the steps in handling a submission or random email (as in not a submission but isn't spam like maybe sent to the wrong inbox but is intended for FUTO)? Also, would be good to let people know why they weren't accepted even if something as broad as, "didn't align with our interests".
Every time I've responded with something like that, 100% of the time I've usually gotten something really angry or combative back. At some point I finally learned why it was when I applied to jobs and followed up with my resume that I did not hear back with a rejection reason or answer. The difference between me explaining why I said no in a manner that people are happy with and a manner where they are unhappy is usually 15 minutes of crafting an email response, which unfortunately I have not had the time for.
i still really want to know if the openly available source, please pay model is working, and to what degree. don't need full financials or something, just wanna know if it's been ok, good, bad, or what. close to break even, how many years of ongoing expense vs. income would it break even maybe, whatever.
Making open source is great. Forcing open source sucks. When I learned the difference between Linux and BSD licenses I immediately prefer BSD. The person doing the work should have the freedom to choose their path. With Linux you're giving software, but attaching strings to what others build on it. It's control. Control you really shouldn't have. Someone can invest value into BSD, package it into a product, and let the market decide if value was added over free and if they want to publicize what they made. A developer should be able to earn money.
While you do have a point that we shouldn't just blindly trust you, I think you're forgetting that trust is something you can actually earn. Although admittedly, I'm not sure how you've earned it, and I say this as someone who does very much trust you. It's funny, I was originally gonna write this comment to tell you how you've earned our trust, but I just realized I have no idea. It's probably because we just fundamentally agree with you, which, admittedly, is probably the last thing you want to hear. Then again, I barely ever even watch any of your videos all the way through. So that's on me for missing all the times you said and not to trust you. I guess I'm just sold with how good the product is.
If I had to guess what it was, I think it goes back to 2013 and 2014 with repair videos on board repair. Right now, everybody and their brother is posting videos on this stuff, but back then nobody did, because it was accepted that this is not something you show people how to do. Everybody thought if they showed somebody else how to do this stuff, that they would lose business, so nobody showed others how to do it. I started making those types of videos when I had 300 subscribers on my channel. I had no dreams of fame, and I had no idea that this would be good for my business and my brands. I just wanted to show other people how to do what I did because I enjoyed it. Regardless of whether I made any money off of it . Now, in hindsight, obviously, it was the right thing to do for money and business. But back then, Most people believed that what I was doing would hurt my business and take away its competitive edge. Yet I did it anyway. I think it was back then my willingness to help other people, even if it came at the expense of myself, that built some of that trust. But I could be wrong. Obviously, today, nobody will see it that way because the culture has completely changed within this segment of the repair industry towards never sharing information to everybody sharing information all the time. I like to think I was a little bit a part of that.
@@rossmanngroup Oh, that makes perfect sense. If anything, you showing how you did it was showing exactly why people were paying others to do it instead. It's like when I replaced the Lazy Susan in a corner cabinet in our house. Yeah, sure. I technically did a decent job, but if possible, I would have absolutely preferred paying someone else to do it, because holy crap was that a pain to do. But yeah, obviously being one of the first people to peek behind the curtain would build up trust like nobody else. That was genuinely one of the smartest business moves you could have ever pulled off. And I can totally see how that would have built trust. Now you've got people like MKBHD and LTT making videos about right to repair giving millions of views. For better or for worse, people trust to them, and I think it would be a brilliant business opportunity to collaborate with them. I know what you're thinking, but it appears that they are very on board with your cause and wouldn't need much persuading to actually advertise futo. Think of it less like rent an influencer and more like buying advertising time. You guys need more developers and more people need to hear about your amazing products. The pre-alpha keyboard is already leagues above the open-source competition. Damn good stuff! The easiest thing in the world you can do to get more eyes on futo and more potential developers interested is getting more eyes on your videos through bigger channels. Admittedly, the idea of Source First software might not be as interesting on a fundamental level as open hardware, like with framework or the fairphone, but I still feel like it's worth trying. I also feel like Someordinarygamers would be interested in FUTO's mission and products. By the way, I would absolutely love to see a desktop version of the voice type app. It would especially shine on those new Snapdragon laptops with their dedicated NPU chip. But anyone with a dedicated GPU could also benefit. Just a consideration. I'd port it myself if I was actually a developer. In fact, I'm using that app to write this whole comment.
So far it seems like you guys are focusing on digital sovereignty and breaking free from Apple and Google. But what about breaking free from other companies like Adobe? Or maybe helping to fund ports of software to Linux? Valve has been working with publishers to make Linux gaming not just possible, but commercially viable. But what about the rest of us? What about software that isn't just gaming? I get that's probably a different goal, but then again, Tim Cook would cry knowing you don't need a proprietary operating system. Linux has always had this chicken and egg problem where nobody wants to port their software because nobody's using it. But if you guys could take the financial burden off of them, then we might be able to see more people switching. More in line with what you guys are actually doing right now, I think it would be cool if we could eventually see a futofone running Linux.
Can't what about everything, one thing at a time. Whataboutism means nothing gets done. Ever. Start somewhere, iterate, succeed, continue. Or, start somewhere, iterate, fail, try again. But must start somewhere. Whataboutism is the enemy of productive activity.
@@FUTOTECH What? Yes, one thing at a time, but was anything I mentioned even on the list of things to address? Start somewhere, but was anything I said a potential destination? Your measly redundant app efforts can't defeat the towering truth of being against the mighty and omnipresent default app. Louis is seemingly sucked into the FOSS cult believing that open-source projects have any appeal to chance to be replacements for the vast majority of normies. Those will keep using the worst and most vile software available to supply their very basic needs. The pro market is no different, FUTO can throw money into dated GIMP but that tone deaf project is an decades old embarrassment and never was any threat to Photoshop by any stretch of imagination.
The best applications usually win. This is why open source projects run most servers on the internet. I can't remember the last time I saw someone playing an mkv file without using VLC on their PC, regardless of technical chops. Nor have I ever seen a streamer or youtuber using anything besides OBS-Studio for their work. Your condescension is not backed by fact. The fact that there are few open source consumer projects with larger marketshare than closed source alternatives does not mean it is impossible, nor does it mean that it has not been done before.

I just wanted to show other people how to do what I did because I enjoyed it. Regardless of whether I made any money off of it
.
I want you guys to keep doing your thing, I just wondered if the stuff I mentioned is even in the same zip-code as your thing.
Also, who wrote this? who am I speaking to?
@@FUTOTECH By the way, in the interest of transparency, who wrote this comment?
I find it kind of confusing how you're actively paying for a Twitter blue account (futo). And how there isn't a mastodon account yet
