- At 30-years-old, Yu Kikuchi was tired of his job. Working in an assembly line that made turbines, he was aching to find a new lease on life. So when he heard about 80-year-old master blacksmith Kosaku Matsumura who made ‘’nata,” or Japanese hatchets, he knew he had found his calling. He moved to the countryside and asked Matsumura to take him on as an apprentice. While Kikuchi has less than thee years of experience under his belt compared to Matsumura's 50, the young man still hopes to one day be at the level of his master. When the time comes, he hopes to take on an apprentice of his own, passing on the blacksmith’s torch.

For once, a video about a craft being kept alive instead of dying out!
they made like five other videos about the same thing.... but its still very interesting and cool
It’s still dying out
That's a wise guy right there. You can learn anything and everything, except how to think.
That bridge at 1:14
I know right
Pause
1:15
Dont make any sudden movements.
I was just about to say that
Lvl 1 bridge
I've been in Japan for over 8 years driving the narrow streets in my tiny Honda Today, but I had to rewind to 1:14 a couple times and pause just to make sure there was a car (a newer Suzuki Swift, if I'm not mistaken) driving over a narrow bridge that had no guardrails or anything to prevent a car from falling to its demise. Dass crayzee.
By the way, I have many 'nata' of varying sizes and shapes.
They're pretty gnarly hatchets.
You should see Japanese weed wackers, or 'kusa kariki'. Basically, the weed wacker you know, but the nylon string is replaced by the blade from a circular saw.
As a selftaught blacksmith with 16 years of experience being 29 right now, and also with an industrial design degree, I totally agree with this. What I have learned, and still learning, for very long time could take less effort, much less mistakes and less time if I ever had a master to learn from. I'm glad I went to design collage becasue this taught me the most important thing in this, and ecery craft, what also was mentioned- the way of thinking about what you're doing.
Pity that it's so short video, I would gladly watch them both at work. It was good though.
P. S.
You have a mistake in description- nata is a machete not a hatchet 😉 But very interesting infos there though.
Amazing, I'm always in awe at how you even find these small, interesting stories, and make it feel so important. Best channel on here, you guys give me hope for the future of CZcams
Anyone notice the bridge at 1:14 has no railings?
I'd drive off accidentally
Holy shit! your right.. I did not notice it.
They should do a story on that bridge... like what the hecks the deal with it? that's a peculiar bridge. For that span, with no railings.
I think it's normal though ?☹
It scared the shit out of me
It’s called a low-water crossing, and submerges under water when the water level gets high. There are no railings to prevent dirt from piling up and destroying the bridge.
Having worked and learned under someone doing more of a trade at a point in life, the thinking is the thing that really took the time to learn
The violin at the end was beautiful
I love these videos they are so amazing and I learn so much from these videos and now I know so much stuff from this Channel these videos 😊
Darius hi
They look a like saibara "the old blacksmith" and grey "the apprentice that wear the same thing" in game Harvest Moon 🤔
Oh my god! I loved that game! I used to play it on a Nintendo SP
I enjoyed that Very much! Keeping the art alive, passing the skills to the next generation. Very enjoyable.
Blacksmithing is awesome !
Love these videos!
Matt TheDestroyer 2 sameeee
That looks so cool and also hard work :D
Really awesome video and inspiring people to safeguard their traditions of their country for future generations.
Mans got passion. Respect.
Whoa that bridge with no railings... I dunno if I have the guts to drive down something that narrow without guard rails!!!
Thanks for sharing your blocksmith knife making
Thank you
Yu kikuchi! Bless ya soul 🌺
1:15 that is one scary bridge to drive on.
Did everyone just instantly stop the video when they saw that bridge
1:13 the scariest bridge I've ever seen!
Man when corona is over we should do this more often.. i think it's neat
I have never met these people but I love them
Awesome

"It will Kill!" God, where is Doug Marcaida when you need him?
Amazing. 💚
Sweat and blood welded into a perfect blade
I love the old Japan
Internet can't give life experience. And you can't just learn without doin'.
If you want to learn, read, and do it all over again, find the way out, solve the problem you face, meet someone that good at specific things. Dive! Deeper!
please do a video about nha nhac in vietnam, the classical court music of hue
Cool
When the video started and he referred to his father as "oyaji" ("my old man") I knew this old guy was going to be pretty interesting!
Nice vid boys
Wonderful story, it sounds like a movie or anime argument.
Matsumura-san's accent and voice reminds me of a Studio Ghibli character =)
Mystical
Idk about that knife ,but I love the message u he sent😁
What about the knife
That young guy sounds like he's already thinking like a master.
surprised genesis, a korean company covered nata maker. thought they would cover nadae chopper from korea’s jeju island. they are almost identical.
1:15 I almost had a heart attack when I saw that bridge
What types of documentaries are used in this video?
Ir you guys like knives, should check kiwami japan. He makes knives with anything, cardboard, ice, wood, resine, rocks, chocolate, jello, sea water.
1:13 THAT IS A RISKY BRIDGE
This is a movie waiting to happen
Any link to purchasing a blade from him?
I was curious about it too. Google "kosaku matsumura nata". There were few articles about the man but since I live under tyranny of eu, I couldn't open them.
you can only purchase it in Kochi, Japan.
1:15 that’s one sketchy bridge right there
HI happy world happy Japan
Machines will never perfect the art of authentic, human craftsmanship.
Because what makes something perfect and human to me, is imperfection.
Machines achieve perfection easily.
But to perfect a skill naturally is special, and valuable.
Imperfection is human.
you should shoot a video about Turkish craftmanship.
I hope that young guy takes the business for longer
土州勝秀さんに、後継者ができて良かったね!
I wish the video is much longer and more in depth.
Subarashi desu !
When I was younger I wanted to be a blacksmith.
That bridge at 1:14. Uh, no thank you.
pussi
@@DredPirateRoberts Edgy people cant handle a light hearted joke anymore.
Woah
Why are these all so short?
1:14 Jesus that's literally a death trap
That was nice. I get it.. The moral of the story is, "why drive a car when you can drive a horse and carriage"
is there anymore ways to make knife
The title remind me of a Japanese guy that make knife out of rice, wood, underpants, ice, carbon, chocolate, and freaking stone
wooow
In Turkey there are blacksmiths like this too , but we make knives that can penetrate an inch of steel rather than chop wood.
Link?
what anime is this?
I bet you 50 bucks, this is going to have anime adaptation
Well they've covered calligraphy, japanese sweets, motorbike customizing, badminton, video game making... I wouldnt put it past them to make a blacksmith one based in modern times.
He cool I dent
The real Hattori Hanzo
-WATASHI WA TAMAGO-
This video is great, but unfortunately also too short :/
The best thing is to get a healthy diet and workout
That’s a Japanese Chance the Rapper if I’ve ever seen one
*Wow you can bold text*
Ethan Robert *_I know!!!!_*
The internet is pretty much a digital textbook at this point. Not always needed but shared with everyone. So go out and find something new.
Can I be your apprentice too?
I’ll buy one for real cheap like a rusted one tbh I have a lot of patience and unhealthy amount
Somebody should make an anime series based on the apprentice
Nanami kento approves
*Buzzfeed*
We learn to make swords
Kinda looks like an enlarged shaving blade lol
MADA MADA
A bridge without a fence?!?
I wish I were smarter, or more able..& could read & speak Japanese, I'd move over their to learn something like this
as well. In the US... our"culture" what do we really appreciate? I don't have a clue.
The American side of craftsmanship is still there. Not only is there blacksmiths but metal engraving and leather carving comes to mind with all the fancy looking American scroll work that goes into leather belts and gun engraving. Try your hand at some of them or go look them up if you're after some nice crafts to learn.
It's hard but not impossible to get a long-term visa to live in Japan. And I highly suggest to learn more about the Japanese approach to working hours and free time (or lack thereof).
But learning the language is not an insurmountable problem, even if it takes a lot of effort and time.
There are enough ressources on the internet. guidetojapanese dot org and tofugu dot org for example. Also wanikani dot com (though this one costs you after a time, but the free sample is still very useful and will need a few weeks to a month to get through).
If you aim for mastering a historical craft, learning the Japanese language most likely pales in comparison to how much time and energy you would need to spend. So this might well serve as a very simple way to test your resolve. :)
@@sertaki Thanks for the kind/helpful response!
True....but there are just some things the Internet can help you with that someone who has had years of experience in the field can.
JustYourAverageGirl He didn’t say otherwise you average cow
@@Pinhead101 Oh look! Your average internet troll!!!
@@Pinhead101 Also I was referring to the narrator at the beginning hun, not the apprentice.
JustYourAverageGirl - I bet your always single.
@@DredPirateRoberts XD says the 40 year virgin living in his parents basement ;P I have myself a man hun
