What Happened To Blackstreet? | Was Teddy's Ego Out of Control?

- American R&B group Blackstreet was the brain child of singer, songwriter, musician, record producer and the creator of the new jack swing genre, Edward Theodore Riley better known as Teddy Riley. After the breakup of another group Teddy created, the ‘80s R&B group Guy, and while in the middle of working his magic for artists like Wreckx-n-Effect, Heavy D and Michael Jackson, he came up with the idea to start a new group featuring himself in 1991.

Damn Blackstreet replace more members than Destiny’s Child! And everybody thinks girl groups have more drama than boy bands.
Yup. Just like how everyone thought the Supremes had the most drama in Motown when it was actually the Temptations...
Right
@@timmy841212 Damn. Good point! 🤔
Oh really???
😆
It’s impressive that Teddy Riley was apart of two groups from the late 80s/late 90s; Guy and Blackstreet. He’s also one of the leading faces of the new jack swing era. His resume is quite fascinating.
And he’s still making crazy good hit songs in Korea now in the kpop genre. Giving them that rnb sound.
Recks n effects to
And Next
He came through Virginia and introduced use to Pharrell!
@@naufrage0 what groups he make songs for other there ? I have my favs but I can give a listen
TAKE ME THERE by Blackstreet, Mase and Mya was my childhood everything.
The producer was smart AF to put the theme song in the beat making the song effervescent nostalgia.
Yesssss it was the Rugrats soundtrack 💯🔥🙌🏻
Yes! 💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽

@@blue9multimediagroup Ahh.... the late 90s. I heard the latter version at an ice cream social. Good times! 🥰
No Diggity by Blackstreet is still a banger to this day!!
🎶 Hey yo, hey yo, hey yo, hey yo!!!!
I got they 1st 2 classic albums in rotation daily, but honestly never liked that song. & its crazy that most of the group members didnt like it neither lol
ABSOLUTELY 🔥💯🔥💯🔥
Backstreet will always be remembered for this song.
Periodt 🔥
Any guy named Chauncey is trouble 😂 and I never knew Blackstreet had so many member swap outs. I only knew Teddy 😂🤣
Sn: Aaron Hall was all I knew when it came to Guy 😂 His vocals, OMG!!! 🥰
Guy > Blackstreet lol
Any guy named Chauncey??? Is that a Menace to Society plug😂😂😂
AND the last name too! My (ex) husband is a Hannibal- #PROBLEMATIC! 😆🤣😂
💀
LMAO!!!
Man Dave Hollister just elevated that group to another level and with Teddy on the boards you can never go wrong... I missed Dave when he left... On that another level album my ish is, "I can't get you out of my mind."... And "before I let you go" is still in rotation.... Man I miss r&b...
Teddy showed he can just make music with anyone.. Guy was so special and backstreet was special too...
It's just hard to keep a group of grown folks together period... Put that with money issues and it rarely last...and constant line up changes just makes the magic disappear.. People connect with the original members and the constant changes definitely didn't help.
Great music tho... Timeless.
The intro to "don't leave me" lives in my mind rent free, so nostalgic! Also, No diggity & Take me there ft. Mya!!💜 thank you for this
"If you take your love away from me, I'll go crazy...I'll go insane! 🎤🎤🎤
@@JuicyPopEntertainment I HAAAAATTTYEEE YOOOUU! 🤣😂🤣
Are you talking about the “What we gone do right here is go back, way back, back into time!”
@@House.Of.Pain. The intro music and "nah baby, nah baby, nah babyyyyy if you take your love away from me..." then the beat drops lol It gives 90s feels and reminds me of a time in my childhood :)
I think "Don't Leave Me" was the best song they ever had. And, "Fix (Remix)" with Ol' Dirty B*stard & Slash will forever have a special place in my heart.❤
The crazy part about this group is they changed members as often as a person changes their draws. And back then no one really noticed. I do not remember anyone mentioning the different members. But when Dave Hollister went solo that is when I started noticing the different members.
Not DRAWS😩🌚
Drawls
So true. I never knew about all the lineup changes. All I ever knew was that Dave Hollister left. lol
I think a main reason for that is that Teddy was a member and the main producer… he kept the sound, vocal arrangement and the vision consistent across different members and albums. Most r&b groups don’t produce their own albums like that. Teddy is so involved with vocals, music and writing that the revolving members don’t affect Blackstreet like other groups changing members.

Yes! My favorite song by them
Tonight's The Night and Wanna Make Love are both dope too!
I had no idea they had that many lineup changes. It's sad that money has to divide friends. That aside, they're music was incredible. I especially loved No Diggity.
The members was crazy to think that they should get the same amount of money as Teddy who did the most work, by writing and producing!
No Diggity is still my jam.
greed and egos
@@michaeldunson2531 exactly..
Fun fact! Joy was originally written for Michael Jackson on the dangerous album. It ultimately didn't make it onto the album but you can hear his original vocals in the chorus on Blackstrret's version.
Teddy Riley, musical genius. NJS4Ever
It was actually written by MJ along with Teddy and Tammy Lucas
@@marvinlanderricks373 Tammy Lucas was so talented. Shame she couldn't have a better solo career. Thanks for the info!
@BillSzczytko Yes, she is very talented
90s r&b just hits different. I'd love to see what happened to Mint Condition!!
Stokley's solo career is what happened to Mint Condition. End of story.

Early 90s and all of 90s was actually where hip hop was it!! Originality, performing, songs etc... 90s belonged to Hip Hop and Grunge
Snoop, pac, biggie, hammer, ice, Naughty By Nature, Coolio, Public Enemy, Bone Thugz, Dre and so many others made the 90s so memorable..
Don't forget the techno sprinkled throughout the decade. Heavy in the early 90s and a few here and there through the rest of the decade. Was a great time to be young and have great music to cruise around smokin a splif too. No dam smart phones, no pronouns, and no woke crap.
Without Teddy, there's no Blackstreet
The song "No Diggity" was steady on repeat back in the day👍🏿.
I wish I was growing up in the 90's like some of y'all 😂.
80s & 90s was where it was at!! Early 90s hip hop was in anotha level
It was amazing lol.. My son says that all the time how he wishes he grew up in the 90s lol..
I still luvvvv that song. Especially " Before I let you go " & Don't leave Me...!! Such romantic dramatic love songz.

I always preferred their song Fix with ol dirty and slash
I do love and miss Blackstreet. Teddy Riley will always be a top legend in the music industry!!
That's why Boy groups break up....either their egos or money problems. But " No Diggity" is basically there signature song. I love "Deep" is also 1 of my other favorite songs.
"Joy" is also a great one.
So glad I found this channel. It's like a my child hood time capsule. 😀😀

@@JuicyPopEntertainment I do.
I loved them . Can you do the Tony Rich Project next
Most of the Blackstreet catalogue is owned by TR and he has a tour, TR and friends in which he performs many of his hits. Blackstreet without TR is laughable.
Yeah , Blackstreet without Teddy is not Blackstreet for me !
Yeah that is weird. Chauncey may have been a co-writer but Teddy was the producer and the beat of Blackstreet.
When I think Black Street, I think non other than Ted Riley!!! He's the symbol of that group...
Teddy's vocals was the weakest of all group members! He may of been the genius behind the scenes, but the other guys made the songs iconic and is what the fans remember most! I'll give him Booty Call, but that's it
@@jasondecorah1227 he’s not even about the singing though. He did everything else. People bought into the blackstreet concept because it was TR.
Wow, I never knew they had so many lineups. They definitely had hits that remains Classics as well. Dave Hollister had some hits as a solo artist.. I listen to all still even Guy.. All these artists brought us great music.
I would love to see stories on Guy, Wreckx-n-Effect, Today, Redhead Kingpin, Heather B, The Coup, Jane Child, Nu Shooz, Boy Krazy, Erule, and Ill Al Skratch
You took me back mentioning RHKP, I loved him!

@@JuicyPopEntertainment you too.
Wow. This was one of the most confusing ones I've seen. Seems like they all played a role in the group having issues. At the end of the day though, who made the group hot? Teddy.
I absolutely love them. They had so many bangers in the 90s
Backstreet was hating on David Holister's talent. That's why David went solo, I couldn't blame him. I can't stand being around haters.
I can't think of any group that didn't openly have mess involved in their split or line up changes. This is at least part of the reason ppl don't form singing groups like they used to(the main reason being that labels just don't want to fund them nowadays).
"No diggity...no doubt."
Thanks for dropping another impressive music profile from the glorious 90s 👏👏👏🎶
I didn’t know Dave Hollister was in that group at all. Him and Chauncey had beef, that is something.
I didn't notice him at first in that group either. When he went solo I thought he was a new singer until I read an interview he did in Vibe I think. That's when I remembered him in Blackstreet but if he had not mentioned it I would've never thought about it.
before i let you go, joy and don’t leave me are so beautiful. teddy riley is so great.

So hearing “BS 2” didnt ring ANY bells with them when they said it aloud?
All these years and I did NOT know that was Teddy Riley in the group.
What??! How??! Which rock have you been living under?
😂😂😂
That is extremely weird there is no Blackstreet without Teddy
There is no BlackStreet w/o Teddy Riley. Chauncey is touring with some other guys as BlackStreet as well as Teddy but I will not go to a BlackStreet show if Teddy is not part of it. He made the sound, he made the group - he is the foundation. He might not have the great vocal skills but as long as he makes the music I am totally okay with it because he created the sound we all love. The other member tour with the sound he created so to anyone saying BlackStreet can do w/o Teddy, they do not really know the history behind Teddy & his New Jack Sound.
Chauncey is so shady its funny🤣
Im die hard fan of both Blackstreet and Guy. I also named my oldest son Riley after Teddy Riley.
1985 Laddi Daddi and The Show 1988 Rob Base -It takes two Teddy!
The point that Mark was amazing on the another level album…he should be paid more…..I hate he didn’t have a successful solo career…he just needed the right team

No Blackstreet without Teddy
You are on it!!’
I lived not to far from Teddy and Chauncey. Chauncey house was on Shore dr with all the cars parked outside. Neighbors thought he owned a Dealership! Lol I remember when Future Records “Teddy’s Studio “ was on Virginia Beach Blvd had 4 security guards with AK47s on the roof. I was like what is going on over there? Michael Jackson was recording that week. Also in Teddy’s neighborhood “ Church Point” his girl was clocked 115mph in a Ferrari and went straight to jail. Crazy times back then! Pharrell was just coming on the scene with Wrex in Effect “ Rump Shacker” Timberland and Missy Elliott were on the scene too! I passed by Missy this past Summer in her silver Ferrari with FL tags . My son was with me and she threw up a cool wave to him. Very cool
