Great tutorial, thank you. If it's a quick answer, if while playing your rotoscoped first frame forward, and more/less of your subject becomes selected (let's say 3 seconds in), do you pause, refine, and keep going, or do you freeze first to bake in the frames that worked up to that point? Thank you!

Can you tell me what the best setting on camera for rotobrush ? Like shutter speed, fps, iso, and f ? Thank you
do you just outline one scene and then freeze? And what if your roto adds an object completely separate from your subject... like a green screen clip that just keeps reappearing. Is there a way to mask that out using pen tool? I tried using alt-roto brush but there were so many reappearances. I know this video was before the launch so feel free to share any new hacks on using the brush! Thanks so much for great tutorial!

Love it, but of all the tutorials I've found (this one included), not one of them shows how to get the correct footage rendered etc. I am new to this but every time i render i get nothing but the outline of the figure and the rest is blackish..
I so want to test this but AE Beta isn't previewing the footage, in the current version and older ones.

when i rotobrush something it looks perfect... but when i tried to render it some parts will not be the frame that i want. For example it will came out a little or it will disappeared some of the parts... i used refine edge tool to fix this problem but the opacity will be lower... i hope that u can help me out.. thx :)

When does the beta stop and main after affects update release?
Kyler, are you using the refine edge tool correctly? I'm getting terrible results and everything is becoming mushy. I don't think using the refine edge tool is as simple as just outlining the subject for a second time. I would like to know what the tools actually does and how to use it correctly, I suspect it has something to do with managing those alpha values it smeers on screen.
We need to upload Rotobrush 2 plagine in AE first? How does it work, can anyone explain?
OMG, now I know what I did wrong.
Instead of pressing the spacebar to start rotoscoping I just moved my cursor.
Rotoscoping will also start then, but you can't see what's happening.

Succinct and to the point. Nice.
Tip: you should use the refine edge AFTER you've finished the roto pass, as it uses the info in your roto pass (including any updates as you go) to propagate. Secondly, when using refine edge, hold ctrl and drag to make the brush bigger, and don't be afraid to go all the way out to capture those flyaways in the hair. Last, when refining the matte, I find chatter reduction enormously helpful. :)
Exactly! Actually it's not a tip, it's the way you should use rotobrush! And I would had that you should not apply refine edge brush to hard edge, only soft edge like hair, that way you have control of the two differente brush in the effect panel. Also , please, denoise(ideally with Neat Video) your footage before any traditionnal keying/rotobrush.

One thing no one us talking about, What if you want to adjust the mask before you freeze it without roto tool re propegating the whole timeline. there was just one frame in the middle of my clip that I wanted to adjust and then when adjusted it it repropegated the entire clip again and all my guidance was lost.. Not sure how to make those small adjustments to one frame without re propegation.

5 minutes total? What kind of system are you on? Mine took an hour to render (space bar) a 30 second clip with no motion. 29.9fps 4k MXF from FS7.

Hey there Kyler, what computer are you using? My 2019 iMac really collapses trying to rotobrush :/
I built my PC. It has a GTX 3080 + Ryzen 5950x + 32GB Ram.
It's so good that people only want to show a few second clip with text behind it trick probably in 1080. Would be easier just adding text and masking out the person than doing this for more than a few seconds. It's Adobe so expect bad guessing tools with jagged edges and more time spend fixing auto fx. I'm testing it with 6k with a 1 min video and version 3 will be out before this renders.

Question: I'm having a problem with the roto brush restarting to recalculate over and over again. This happens when I make the slightest adjustment. Is this normal?
Make sure once you finish your roto. You click FREEZE. That will hold all of the changes made to your roto!

Who knows the problem?
I have 7 secs 4k video and when I try to rotobrush a person out of the footage it is lagging like a hell and allways starts to redefine the rotobrush selection.
So at 5th second it can self restart and took some time for it.
If Ill try to copy rotoscope 2 or 3 times AE is simply unoperable.
Any hints on that?
I would try to freeze the roto after you complete the first render!

yap! after you rotobrush, go to layer > Auto-trace, play with the settings and press ok, then you can set the mask as a path in saber!

I thought it would be awesome, but I have more crashes than successes. Mind crashes after about 50 seconds of rotoscoping and completely freezes up. I got 8 cores and 32Gb of RAM, so it should really be crashing. I am using After Effects 2022
i guess you rotobrush black and white footage the same way. And everything depends on the level of detail and contrast with the background. Thanks.

Roto brushing remains tricky to do. The new tool sadly isn't far advanced on the old one and you end up with many of the same errors that takes ages to manually iron out.
You must admit you chose a particularity non challenging shot to use for your example - a subject on an evenly lit mono colour surface.
Best way I've been able to get great results, is hire a production house that does this stuff full time. But they use a team and tools like silhouette, mocha, and other high end vfx tools. Best money in terms of time for results.
