- So I've had to rebuild my transmission because it was leaking. This is part 1 of probably 3 videos that I will do on the subject. Checkout the other parts:
Part 2: • E46 ZF 5HP19 Transmiss...
Part 3: • E46 ZF 5HP19 Transmiss...
There should be 5 documents related to rebuilding the transmission in this dropbox folder:
www.dropbox.com/sh/g21ahp7i0f...
In that folder you will find the exploded diagrams for the valve body as well as instructions for the proper resistances for all the solenoids.
To see how to get the transmission in and out of the car, checkout my rear main seal videos:
• BMW E46 Rear Main Seal...
• BMW E46 Rear Main Seal...
I bought my rebuild kit from The California Transmission Supply Company, which was an authentic ZF kit and they had the best prices I could find:
www.thectsc.com/catalog/5hp19-...
Check out Transtar's website here:
www.transtar1.com/
In addition to simply buying absolutely everything you need from them, including rebuild kits and friction rings and the oil pump, etc, you can get every small part inside of the transmission as well, including the little plastic tubes for the oil pump. Be careful to save your o-rings because they only come in the rebuild kit, I believe. They were out of those as separate items.
Apparently FCP Euro has ZF oil pumps available so check them out at:
www.fcpeuro.com/products/auto...
If you need to rebuild your torque converter and don't want to let them do it for whatever reason (maybe you're not near them and it will cost too much to ship to them and back), you can also buy a rebuilt one from Torco Enterprise, which is in the Los Angeles area, and they also sell on eBay:
www.torqueconverter1.com/
I reference several other videos in this one, particularly those of Jeff Richardson, which I've created a playlist for:
• ZF 5HP19 Transmission ...
As well as this video from transmission builder Gary Ferraro:
• ZF5HP19 Gear Monitorin...
If anyone is wondering, here is the cost break down of the parts I bought (around Jan 2016):
Torque Converter $201.65
Oil Pipes $13.08
Rebuild Kit $179.95
Reverse Drum $92.00
F Clutch Drum $50.00
Friction Plates $120.00
Oil Pump $288.75
ATF Fluid $39.22
Grand Total $984.65

I have been doing some of my own car repairs for a number of years without consultation, a few months ago my daughter"s 2000 E46 BMW would not move when the reverse was selected, so I started to watch some video, after reviewing a few, I choose your videos to test my ability. This was my first attempt at a transmission repair job and because of your detailed videos and articulation, I was able to complete the repairs to the transmission. You are proof that CZcams can be used constructively and not necessarily destructively. THANK YOU 50S KID. Your videos are great teaching tools, keep them coming.
This guy right here has the ability to solve any mechanical problem. He knows the info is out there, he does his research, builds up his confidence and then has at it. Autodidact for the win.
Why thank you!
I'm extremely impressed by you taking on a transmission overhaul. That said, seeing the inside of one of these beasts makes the best argument ever to choose the simplicity of a manual gearbox.
Why am I watching this on a beautiful Saturday afternoon? I only have manual transmissions! Thanks for the great videos. You are very easy to listen to and follow. I process things very similar to you - read lots and watch videos to build up my confidence. Then, tackle the job. Good job.
I am an amateur and have rebuilt many manual boxes without any problems, but I have no idea how you have so much knowledge to rebuild one of these. I watch the pros doing this and you are just as good.
Did you steal my brain ? This is exactly how I think ! I like the way you narrate the details as you go. Too often someone with "expert knowledge" just pops a part off, gives it a name and throws it to the side with no explanations. You take the time to clean, show and describe what you're seeing and doing. Like Chevy Chase said in Modern Problems after he snorted up a trail of "demon powder" - I like it !
Great DIY video.
No venture, no gain and that's part of the learning process.
Come to think about it, that's how the entire human race advance and guys like you are the pillars of that culture.
Hats off to you !
I am very impressed with your patience and ability, I don't think I could ever tackle this
This is what You Tube is all about, furthering the knowledge of people. You make what seems an impossible task look doable.
This is the best. I could watch you all day . I love your approach to projects and how clear and descriptive you are .
Genuinely
Thank you.
I saw many of your videos and gotta say that I like your approach on repairing and your knowledge. Keep up man, quality work.
Amazing this video is already 5 years old. Great camera !!! What a extremely good video. Keep up the good work Jason!!!
Recently told I need a new Trans on my 2000 323is, and I tell you I have been in the "dumps" since last Friday! So I decided to make it my mission to learn more about it, other than knowing that it helps drive the car! Within a few days, I have become accustomed to the terminology, while searching for a new one, used or rebuilt. I viewed the video on Mr. Ferraro and learned something about gears 3 and 4 ( part of my problem with car). Additionally, my learning experience continued as the video moved to the 50's kid on rebuilding the trans. I have gained so much just by watching you breakdown your transmission. You are so darned efficient, knowledgeable and organized. I'm impressed! But not only that, you have helped me alleviate some of my fears of the unknown. I now know and with more seeking and searching, I can make an informed decision about my car. Thanks and thanks!
thank you so much for your time and the great job you did filming this amazing video .It is truly informative and eased my fear or the unknown I just had to tell you I have never seen an instructional video as good as your's . I can't thank you enough
And this is how this is done. Plus great video, everything explained, every detail crystal clear. Thanks.
Thank sooooo very much for these BMW videos! Thanks to you I summoned the courage to work on our E39 leaky transmission!
Mario Herrera where exactly was your e39 leaking?
Kudos to you for even attempting this! Seeing the amount of part is the first drum after the Torque converter and I said Nope!
You have the best videos on CZcams on how to! Hands down
Your videos are amazing!!! I used to complaint about not any good quality rebuild/replacement e46 videos. Then I found your channel!
Thanks!
Dude ! I love your videos ! They have been such a help to me and i THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart. Jim
The best video tutorial on youtube, everything is explained as it should be, i hope you will help a lot of ppl and please keep up the good work, thank you 10/10
You are a very good mechanic. You are also definitely a very intelligent person, obviously. I commend you for your dedication, that is a trait that is all too rare in society today!
Gonna be tackling the d drum replacement here pretty quick along with a refresh kit. Hopefully these vids will assist me along the way! 🙌
You ever get it done?
damn this man has some patience and ability to do this, i could never. my respect
wow 187k views that is a lot of bad bushings.thanks, because of you I now have the courage to tackle this job.
very nice video
That's a lot of work and it takes a ton of balls to tackle that job on. Nice job!
+Jean Dumitrescu Thx!
Great videos! Super helpful. One thing I was trying to do is identify if my D/G drum had already been replaced or not (180k miles and no reverse problems) but I could not find a way to ID the updated drum without fully disassembling the clutches to see the "Kuhle" marking under the G piston. So I fully disassembled it, and did not have the Kuhle drum. But after buying one, I learned an easy way to ID it that may help others. The original drum is not machined on the OD of the G drum area, it's a rough casting (D drum are IS machined). The Kuhle drum is fully machined on both drums.
Excellent work as always....highly appreciated for quality work and tips...
many thanks 50sKid, invaluable info here. much appreciated. :)
Am pretty handy with my e39 but am glad i have a manual. This is too complicated. Hats to you young man
I have a 02 986 Boxster with some low fluid induced slippage
Contemplating a rebuild... interesting and informative
Fantastic, very good job! You can use a litle pipe, tube in your tool. Thank you for sharing, posting video like this :)
Dude you saved my ass so much with your videos your awesome keep ehm going !!!!🙏💪🏻
That spring compressor tool is absolute genius! I have the gm tranny in my 330ci and will ultimately have to rebuild or replace it. Everything I've read (very little in the way of you tube) says that compressing those is a bee otch and you made it look like child's play. Thanks again for an awesome vid!
+Robert Laugherty Yeah it's a piece of cake to compress auto tranny clutch packs. The tool is the design of Jeff Richardson, whose videos I credit in the description.
+50sKid the pistons are evidently difficult to put back in place on the gm 5L40e. They sell some sleeves to help wedge them back into place. I hope my transmission doesn't fail anytime soon but I'm actually looking forward to trying this. Even considered buying a junk yard one to practice on. Didn't see a significant amount of burning on your clutch steels so looks like this will serve you a good long time! Are you going to replace the wiring harness? Do you think that is necessary due to the heat cycling making it brittle?
+Robert Laugherty Wait for part 2--I show how I deal with burn spots on my C clutch steels. I did not replace the wiring harness--it's fine. Just had to be really delicate. So transmission builders use something called a Bench Buddy www.benchbuddy.com/ to burnish the insides of the piston sleeves in the valve bodies to help sticky pistons to not be stuck. It's like a pipe cleaner that you can stick on a drill. There is a transmission builder called Hiram Gutierrez who has a good CZcams channel and he uses them. czcams.com/users/hiramgutierrez I highly recommend you watch one or two of his builds on other GM transmissions and maybe you'll get a good idea of what it looks like. I can't remember which of his videos I saw it in, but if I can find it I'll post it.
+50sKid Oh check that out he has a whole bunch of vids on the 4L60E transmission, that must be somewhat similar: czcams.com/users/hiramgutierrezsearch?query=5L40E
+50sKid thanks for the help and good references
great video! showing also such a great person you are!!!
very good. I learned a lot, and I loved your tools.
Appreciate your great effort, and thanks for sharing the video.
You sir are a very brave and resourceful.
Sweet video mate :)
Thank you very much, helped a LOT!!!!
Well done, great video. Here in south Africa people are roping us badly. For gearbox overhaul R6500. Because of F clutch only besides f clutch drum. Thanks very much for your video.
Great video!
congratulations man
Great Video !
very nice explained everything, can guess it was quite intresting and so as nervous job doing it the first time thinking all the time about the first test drive lol :D great job tho !
I use usually brake cleaner and compressed air before insatlling everything back.
bravoo very good job!!!!
Top video!
Fantástic channel Keep it going
So much appreciated the time You spent to show us this great project , I just got a question about My 04 330ci most of the times when the car sits for an hour or 2 after driving I get slow engagement from R to D for 1-3 seconds , it'll go a way after that and no shifting issues while driving
I know I might need a new used tranny, but just don't know what's causing the problem, I even replaced the oil and filter but no improvement.
giggity.... best part of the whole vid, made my day! lol
;-)
Absofuckinglutely
excllent ,well explained video
Reverse can also fail due to the B clutch wearing out. I have that problem. The D drum is fine.
This requires a good deal of skill.
Attention to detail, what moat people don't have 😆
I wish there was a detailed diy video for the zhp21 on my 2007 bmw 335i. Getting gear ratio monitoring for 3-4. I've done fluid, filter all sleeves except the solenoids. Hoping its solenoids & not the e-clutch as I would have to take it to a shop, though I would be so willing to diy if there was a vid.
hi your video was extremely informative! thank you so much! i rebuilt mine. I have a question I've heard that once you disconnect the transmission the computer goes into a default mode which makes the transmission start off in third gear. is that true because it appears mine is doing that and the transmission sign shows up on the instrument panel in the shape of a gear. i tried plugging in my old tool but it says no connection? any thoughts? thanks George
hello i have a 325ci my car wont go forward it has the transmission warning light and moving very slowly into forward but into reverse its running great what do you is the problem
love it
Stay organized like engine building and you can do this too!
Hey. Great video(of course). Just wondering how the transmission rebuild held up?
Great videos and great information. But how many miles are on this transmission at time of rebuild? Was it properly maintained? Fluid changes at 60K? And what brand of torque wrench is that? Flawless performance from it?
wow you are hardcore!
+yoyomin Thx!
Thank you for putting this video..hit a question maybe you can guide me to the right direction... X5 4.4 transmission is slipping but no codes. Drain fluid no metal, change filter..still the same...any advice
Thanks for the video! Now I know why my reverse don't work, and sometimes clutch slides driving forward
+SuperVoorti do you have the same car 330 i bimmer? and have 5hp19? no reverse is the d/g cluch drum brocken!! ok give me a call if you like 661 4860117
Thx but no thx, Im from Finland so..
@50sKid I'm not entirely sure what happened to mine yet. I'm going to pull the transmission out today. When I was driving I saw some light smoke in the mirror and when I turned down the music, I could hear something wasn't right, like a rotational groaning sound. I stopped the car and saw smoke was coming out from under the hood but when I opened it, I couldn't see anything. I debated stopping there but was literally a few minutes from home. When I got home, I saw ATF hemorrhaging all over the driveway. The car was still moving and shifting fine at that time. I'm thinking it probably spun the bushing out from the front. Do I have other things I need to worry about since I drove it like this a few miles? What other kind of damage could have occurred with a probable low fluid condition etc.? Thanks for the great videos! I've been working on cars for over 20 years and sometimes I think "wow this is complicated" and then hearing you say "no big deal" about some of this stuff is actually a great a confidence booster!
Hi there I’ve got this transmission in my BMW which was fine until I had the oil and filter replaced after which the transmission started to slip under acceleration, have you any idea why this could be .....Thank you...Great video btw 👍🏻
Great video, any idea why my transmission would be stuck in 4th gear? Clutch works but cant get it out of 4th. Its a drift car so I drive her hard.
Wow I got a 2001 325i and I thought my front transmission seal was leaking and when I took the torque converter out the same exact thing happened on mine
Hello my friend !!!! excellent job !!! A question was born when i saw your video and reading 5hp19 repair manual !!! Does clutch assembly need to make some measurements in order to get the right thickness on shims or snap rings ???? Just wondering !!!!!! Thank you in advance !!!!!
Would you know by any chance where to find assembly documents for 6HP21 (mated with N54)?
Wish there were good videos like these for 6HP as well
Cheers
very very very usefull......
Hello mate, a little help needed. 523i with a 5HP19 'box (Thailand market cars had weird specs).
Leaking oil from the selector shaft. Do you know the part number for that seal? I've looked everywhere, and realOEM just show it, but faded out in diagram, and not listed.
EDIT: I just skipped through part II - no mention. But I noticed oyu have the selector position sensor there on the side. i do not. So confused...
Damn, the dudes got balls
Hello 50'Kid I'm impressed by your incredible work and I was about to rebuild the gearbox of my Audi Allrod, I'm doing the work on the stands and I realized that I do not have enough space to pull the gear down, you at what height you brought your machine to be able to extract it?
Great DIY! How did you remove the transmission from the car? It should be very heavy. Did you get help?
help Hi I have a problem with my BMW 325i 2001, the car throw around the oil while running transmission, the cooling hose was broken, the hose repair and poured oil and just run back, will not run for forward and it has the light of the transmission on. Thack
On my 2001 bmw 325i I replaced that oil pump seal and it drove about 15 miles perfect then it leaked all the oil from the but when I dropped the transmission the seal just looked pushed out? Maybe I just didn’t press it on right
Hey I change the pump gasket then put everything back together and now I have now reverse... do you know what my this may be?
Any chance to get subtitles for these 3 videos you’ve uploaded? Tks
hello , thanks for this DIY video , i use BMW E85 with AT transmission 011TW (it seem like 5HP19??) and i got problem with gear doesnt change while driving ,
i need to rebulid like this or just check solenoid valve ? or something else ? thank you
Great video mann. I just wanted to know if the zf 5hp19 that goes on the bmws is the same as the one that goes on Porsche cayman 2007. Like im finding one that has come off a bmw will it be possible to get it working on a Porsche Cayman 2007
Merci 🙏
Hello, whether the converter affects the acceleration because I have such a feeling of the car is a little ripping
Question I have a 00 bmw 323ci swap the trans and now I have a permanent cog light on what should I do
I have an audi 5hp19 instead of the 2 tubes going to the pump it has 5 small rubber tubes and i cant find them anywhere to buy
I've got the sames transmission with other problems is there a full transmission rebuild kit for the 5hp19
Hi , I have passat with 5hp 19 transmission, the car was flooded, and the TCU was dead, the car worked in limp mode, he used it like that for a while forward 3d gear an reverse working fine, after I bought it from him I found the dead TCU, there was a lot of corrosion on the plug also, I cleaned it and after that the car works normally forward, changes gears smoothly but the reverse only works when the engine is idling, as soon as I touch the acceleration it seems to disengage and acts as neutral, if I release the acceleration it goes in reverse, other simtoms, when cold in reverse there is only a bump even at idle and car stops, move from N to R and moves a little and disangages, when hot reverse works at idle, it even goes uphill, other than that, if I remove the TCU reverse seems to work fine, I can accelerate even when cold. Hope you read this
Hey 50’s kid, love your videos. Quick question, I was driving my 2000 e46 auto, heard medium POP! Noise and transmission started slipping. Drove a mile to stop in a safe location, looked underneath car and transmission fluid all over the place.
What do you think happened?
What do you recommend to do? Replaced or rebuilt transmission?
The car is only worth $2000 in good running conditions? Thx in advance.
hello50skid I have issue with the oil pump I'm going to replace it..do I have to replace the clutches also? car has 100.000 miles
Have you ever swapped engines with an x5 and 330i 3.0 and had to reprogram the TCU? I'm having issues with a tranny that worked prior to the swap project I'm working on. Any word or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Please I want a book that explains the parts of this gearbox
Hello, passat b5+ also use 5hp19 transmission so I can also use this video for rebuilding a passat tiptronic trans? They should be same ZF trans I believe
You didn't do a video of the removal of the transmission for the 335i ?
Hello, my 5hp19 FAU transmission have strange kick when I turn into drive and when I turn from reverse to drive, transmission is slipping. Do you know what is the problem?
Hello mi trans no work I change the fluid do you Can Tell me because need fix what need buy
How much fluid does this gearbox hold and what type did you use ?.....also is it possible if draining the gearbox to change the oil to drain the fluid out of the torque converter otherwise doesn’t the old fluid left in the torque converter mix with the new gearbox oil ? ....Thank you
i don't know why my bmw e46 318i 2001 having a cold start transmission issue with first gear rev up to 3500rpm but if i let it warm up it behave normal
Would this information be applicable to ZF EHP-24 as well or no? If not is there another video for this transmission?
Now you know why the other guy he was on about had a smaller block in the middle on his press, to support the centre shaft while you press it to put clip on not a roll of tape lol
How much to change the transmission, 2005 e46 sully motor, the car does not move when cold. I keep having to put fluid in it .Zf 5 trans.?
very good video! it is a pity that there is no subtitles. I don't understand English well
