    You’re on the Dashing Axe channel and in this video we will tell you about a project that took a month of daily work, hundreds of sensors, a thousand connections, a lot of difficulties and problems. And as a result, a smart countertop, analogues of which I haven't seen. Enjoy watching.

    You have to market this to the D&D community. Hex and Grid tables are ubiquitous in pen and paper gaming now, and if you could make something similar to match the scale of existing figures, props, and gear, probably at a standard table height, that comfortably seated four to six people, you would find an audience for the design.

    Amazing concept. Your target audience is nerds specifically those in tech as I'd imagine this isn't going to be cheap. Table top games is one option that a lot of people have mentioned but the other being an IOT desk. Taking the sensors and connecting them to like a rasberry pi would allow programmability You could then install a switch to cycle through a few preset options like breathing patterns etc. But using a raspberry pi for processing would allow your users which i'd imagine a good deal of them being very tech savy could then program each capacitive button to their liking. IE smart home commands. volume controls, lighting, weather alerts. Would be interesting to see the table top being sold as is allowing the user to build or contract the rest of the desk/table to their liking.

      @@DrinbevorBernd that's what I thought, wonderful idea, beautiful tables and lighting, but probably out of the price range of most people. Great for custom orders from people with money. What they showed in no way looked even close to mass production capable. I love the wood but I think it might be more feasible to 3d print, or leave the wood out and do some kind of stone, resin, or plastic molded pieces in it's place, to lessen the cost of materials and most importantly time. The wood they start out with looked around 50% gone by the time the product was finished. My guess was that that table was going to be in the 5-10k range, mainly due to build time per unit.

    Damn! I wasn’t actually planning on sitting through ~15 mins of a table being made, but that was thoroughly great, and the finished product was better than the screenshot let on. Thanks for sharing part of the process.
    Ya know, if you had this attached to an App that enabled user scripting and apis, you could have your own market. Imagine a P2P chess app that connected users with challenge level filter. Could tap a corner to connect to the ‘lobby’ / broadcast availability, then whoever accepted responds and both tables pulse till they hit begin. But whatever, many other uses so the open script / open api is the key, much like a game enabling mods.
    Your quality looks good, so this would help sell at the price range you’re probably targeting, and gain some dedicated customers. Maybe you don’t need to include a RPi, but allow a space for one with a standard interconnect.
    Aaanyways, thanks for an interesting video, and a little inspiration to go with it.

    Absolutely beautiful. I was confused about the aluminum rings until I realized they were holding the LED strips - of course, heat sinks. Those strips can get toasty. (I got some years ago, very early in their availability, and had rigged a spiral of the stuff around a PVC pipe as a color-changing lamp, and it definitely got things smelling like toasted plastic.)

    I am definitely far from being any level of investor, and I think this is the first time I’ve commented on a CZcams video since CZcams came out… 🤔
    But as a consumer & person who can’t stop thinking “why stop there?” (brain injury side effects), combining not only Style with what’s essentially a beautiful nightlight, building in touch phone chargers, laptop chargers, touch sensors to turn lights on and off (in another room, patio, etc) & even a heads up display, for a clock, temperature outside, the possibilities are endless.
    I don’t even know if this comment will post as I haven’t posted on here in at least a decade, but this is the first thing I’ve seen in a long time that is truly amazing. Very nice to see that there are people inventing things, instead of just reinventing what someone already did💪🏻

    I just came across this video, and trublgrl's comment is solid. You should have marketed this to the PC gaming community, and not just for tables. Mirrors, wall panels...anything.
    Also, the possibility of repairs needs to be considered, with more effective cable management. Something this expensive cannot be just thrown away if one of the wires shorts.
    Will you be able to make this table for anyone who wishes to make a custom order? The 'Artist' links on your channel don't all work.

    What a great idea, if I may suggest a couple of things? perhaps add a few charging ports for cellphones/tablets, and a RGB option to change the colors? perhaps even a bluetooth function so you can control it via iphone/android. This would be great around holidays, or for special family events. If you also add the option for a glass top, it would prevent anyone from scratching the epoxy which is the main reason I don't use my epoxy table for my laptop or eating on. I put a glass top on it and that took care of the risk of scratches.
    Great job! I can only imagine how many hours for development and implementation it took you.

      being an adult sucks.
      adult money just means more of it passes through your hands. but all of it has to be spent on rent and power and gas and food and clothes and soaps and (i can keep going like this for an hour straight)
      when you as a kid have 300 dollars. you actually have 300 dollars.
      when an adult has 300 dollars only 20 of it can be spent on something they wants. the rest needs to go to something they need
      every single adult in the world, wants to be a kid again.
      so don't rush to be an adult. be a kid first.
      (or aspire to be so rich that you can stay like a kid as an adult.)

    Hmm, lots of recent comments, but the kickstarter ended already?
    It could be complicated to expand upon this but I think it has even more potential. The sensors are awesome, but if you could control all the units it may have more applications. Like switch from sensor mode to screensaver like moving pattern or use display a visualization of audio.
    Linked with other devices the sensors could function as inputs (via app or computer) like a musical instrument? And possibly interactive games.
    Would there be a way to split the electronics into a core grid with modules for each hex? As that may be a tight fit you could incorporate 3D printed parts.

    CZcams algorithm just suggested this to a lot of us, I see the kickstarter ended in January for this project which is a shame since it’s now capturing so much attention. It looks like a stunningly beautiful and awesome table which I have to agree with other commenters about gamers being interested in this table such as myself. I could see it being extremely popular as a table top replacement for the adjustable desks. If there was a way to get this produced with just the slab of wood people could replace the boring wood our desk tops currently have and add this to it, additionally since the adjustable desks need power it would already be near a power source to make it more convenient than in the middle of my living room. I know there is an option for a 25 aH battery but I’m not sure who would like to drag their table around to charge it. Overall, such an amazing concept and project which I think will gain more attention now that it’s in the algorithm. I will like and share this video

    What would take this to the next level would be to make a game out of it. Players would have different colors and when you placed their pieces on the board (table) I would change to their color. Would have to put some sort of memory in each piece that would hold their color code. When placed on the table that specific spot would have to read the piece and change to the color. Then just create the game from there.

      @@Gingerjuli That is what I thought it was going to be too, some sort of gamer table. This is some amazing craftsmanship and is very cool but a light up table is a novelty that will get old quickly and only be used if you are having groups over and what to show it off for a minute. A table that could also be a functional game table will never not be useful.

      Back in 2008 the original Microsoft Surface was an interactive touch screen table that could be used for games and all other kinds of applications. Their promo videos back then showed it interacting with different objects that were placed on it in different ways. Like it connecting and extending your phone display when you put it down, using NFC to pay for a restaurant bill when you placed a credit card on it, and, of course, games.

    • @patty4730
      @patty4730 Před 2 lety +35

      The electronics are fairly simple. They used a touch sensor TTP223 as a switch on each light, they extended its range with the wire ring they made first (not the aluminium ring they mounted the lights to, the wire ring. The TTP223 is the red circuit board you can see at each circle.
      The ttp223 is a switch that turns the lights on. So its just a basic lighting circuit with a switch.
      The ttp223 can be operated in multiple ways depending on which jumpers you set it to. They are using a proximity setting. The wire ring acts as aerial to extend the range.
      Add in a few resistors to correct the power, voltage and current from the dc supply to the LEDS and or relays so the switch can carry a smaller current than the leds, a tranformer to convert ac power to dc power at the plug, some fuses and you are done.

    • @theskyabove1
      @theskyabove1 Před 2 lety +1

      Can the ttp223 be programmed to fade the LEDs off after a few seconds like the ones in the video?

    • @patty4730
      @patty4730 Před 2 lety +8

      @@theskyabove1 there are a few versions of it brad. From the data sheets i have looked at, no. But you can program a micro controller in arduino to do that for a variable timer or you can make a simple delay off timer with a capacitor, an npn transistor and another resistor or two. By changing the capacitor size, you change the discharge rate and hence the power off time. There are also many other timer circuits you could look up depending on how elaborate you want it.

    As cool as this build is, I want to see detailed plans for how you can scale this work up before I pledge for it. Looks like its going to be one of these where you manage to build one and have no idea how to go about making 500, burn through the KS money in 2 years trying to figure that out and then nothing.

      @@darkracer1252 It's common sense though bro, a lot of people can figure out how to build something cool, but very few manage to scale up production of that. In fact its like a 1000 times harder, even if you dont automate, hiring and managing a bunch of staff to assemble it for you is already hard. So if they barely got the product to work then you can imagine how far they will be to achieve mass production. On KS a lot of people face the realities of this situation for the first time after already receiving payment and having real commitments on product with delivery date to customers.
