Stephen Meyer Interviews John Lennox about going "Against the Tide"

  • Intelligent design proponent Stephen Meyer sits down for a conversation with Oxford mathematician, and debater extraordinaire, John Lennox. Both have explored the intersection of science and faith, and challenged the atheistic materialism pushed by many scientists and scholars. Here they discuss the science that leads them to believe in a purpose driven universe from the origin of life to biological evolution to the fine-tuning of nature and the universe.
The conversation comes in advance of the forthcoming one night only film "Against the Tide: Finding God in an Age of Science." The movie stars Oxford University mathematician John Lennox and actor Kevin Sorbo, and highlights debates between Professor Lennox, arguing the case for theism, supported by science, against prominent atheists including Richard Dawkins and the late Christopher Hitchens. You can see it on November 19, for one night only, in theaters across the US. Be sure to reserve your tickets here: againstthetide.movie/. #AgainstTheTideMovie

Best John Lennox retort ever..... Stephen Hawkings said that "Religion is a fairytale for people who are afraid of the dark" John Lennox came back with "Atheism is a fairytale for people who are afraid of the light". Quick as a whip that John Lennox is!!! Great defender of the faith!!!!!

Very few jump to atheism because it makes them feel better. I bet if you could peer into the minds of most atheists, you would see them longing for a God. It certainly isn't a fairytale. Religion, on the other hand, almost always includes the optimal outcome for a person. So, as usual, Lennox uses poetic language, but really says nothing at all about the actual existence or non-existence of God.

      - Very few jump to atheism because it makes them feel better.
How do you know? Have you done research? How many have you asked?
      - I bet if you could peer into the minds of most atheists, you would see them longing for a God.
Have you ever tried to debate atheists? Most of them hate God in my experience. If they didn't they would search for him and find him.
      - Religion, on the other hand, almost always includes the optimal outcome for a person.
Almost always? Have you studied all religion? What is the exception to the rule? Can you tell me in your own words what Christianity teaches and what the "optimal outcome" is for a christian?
      - So, as usual, Lennox uses poetic language, but really says nothing at all about the actual existence or non-existence of God.
This is just an ad hominem, he's well known for debating FOR the existence of God.

@@alternativefernandez6471 I don’t know that it is possible to say that “very few jump to atheism because it makes them feel better.” All that you can say is that not all choose atheism because it makes them feel better. Some have a longing for God. Something in their psyche doesn’t allow them to move toward God though. In my case I was befriended by an atheist when I was younger who challenged me on my faith. He was always challenging me. His driving motivation was that he didn’t want a god to interfere with his choices in life much like Bertrand Russell. Richard Dawkins has voiced similar thoughts. Thomas Nagel said, “I hope there is no God! I don’t want there to be a God”. Most atheists writing today seem to be saying that atheism makes them feel better about their choices. In other words they feel better without God. Not rational reasoning but hey, they’re atheist.

I love this. I was taught in America in public school. I loved science and took science classes that I was not even required to take. (but I struggled with the mathematics). I was raised Christian and my faith was at the core of my understanding of my existence. But the teachers (especially in biology oriented classes) assumed and taught that evolution was the only logical theory as to how life began and human kind came to be. This as you can imagine caused a lot of "fights" inside my young mind. I am relieved to know that people with much higher IQs than mine are strong in their faith in God and The Holy Bible. I suspect that many youth are in the same quandary because people they respect are telling them that God is a fairy tale and if they were more intelligent, they would see that. Thank you! May God bless y'all! By the way, if string theory turns out to be true, (strings vibrating), It isn't hard for me to think that God's voice started those original vibrations. :-)

Two extremely intelligent people. I loved when Lennox and Meyer talked about "the primacy of the Word" and how Lennox even told people like Hoyle that matter and energy were derivative. Yet, he can't follow Luther's simple recommendation--which ironically was written to people who couldn't accept that God even took 6 days to create. Luther said:
"“When Moses writes that God created heaven and earth and whatever is in them in six days, then let this period continue to have been six days, and do not venture to devise any comment according to which six days were one day. But if you cannot understand how this could have been done in six days, then grant the Holy Spirit the honor of being more learned than you are. For you are to deal with Scripture in such a way that you bear in mind that God Himself says what is written. But since God is speaking, it is not fitting for you wantonly to turn His Word in the direction you wish to go.”
I think what makes me so sad is what Lennox said about the atheists--without realizing it applied to those (like Meyer and Lennox) who only accept the Bible as far as their intellect allows them to. Lennox said: "It is so obvious, yet I know many professors who can't see it." Yes, sadly I do, too!
And, it is hard to support people who stand against and undermine the full Word of God (Jesus Christ) in order to mesh with and gain or maintain credibility within the pseudoscientific brainwashing and bullying community of evolutionism/bigbangism. The real people standing "against the tide" are what is called young earth creationists, but in actuality are just the Bible-believing creationists. Even, Dawkins recognizes that.

9:21 “The _laws_ of nature don’t actually cause things. They describe patterns that we observe but they’re not the _causes_ of things.”
*And* _good_ scientists acknowledge that this is true, that language is a shape which relates a thing. But also that in a deeper semiotic sense, things themselves are slippery chains of signifiers-words referring to words referring to _is’s_ which inform our _oughts._

John, I know you like Jordan Peterson. Could you email him to meet up next time you are in Toronto? I think he needs you. Just a private meet up maybe. He just made a short video and at the end he invoked the “grace and mercy of God”.
He has been through the ringer. I would love to hear that he encountered your kindness. What could it hurt to ask?
He is going to be teaching on Proverbs soon-and then Exodus!
    I appreciate you so much.

Ohh my oh my..In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And there is only one God. His name is YHWH. Who said in times past that He spoke to the father's by the prophets. In these last days He has spoken by His Son, Yahshua Messiah as God has purposed. Let us not be deceived. Yahshua said; l can do nothing without the Father and that God is Spirit. And that no one can enter the kingdom or see the kingdom of heaven lest they be born again. Meaning bearing the image of God hence the Holy Spirit. Yahshua ( Jesus) said; l am the Way, the Truth, and the Life, no one can come to the Father except by Me. There is one God and Father and one Lord Yahshua Messiah ( Jesus Christ ), one faith, and one baptism, let us not be deceived and know the one true God. HalleluYah.

17:33 *old atheism vs. new atheism* “That encounter with Dawkins which was really formidable-almost overnight gave me a worldwide platform, which I’ve managed to retain.
And the aggression which I discovered doesn’t characterize all atheists. I learned very rapidly that there‘re still some of the more old style atheists who take the view that they _respect_ but disagree with what I believe. Whereas the aggressive new style is, _we don’t respect what you believe and we will mock it and ridicule it and all this kind of thing._ Which to my mind as an academic that means you’ve lost the argument before you start.”

Very relaxing and inspiring. I know Stephen from some of his books, but John is a great discovery, and I look forward to learning more from him. (And must stop thinking 'Lennon'!) I can't look forward to seeing the film (there's a clue as to why) or talking picture, since I'm not in or of your country.
For a rare Catholic rationale for actual creationism against evolution (not just the usual Catholic compromise), search 'hugh owen on the catholic cure for racism ' in videos. It's 3 hours of science, social history, politics, etc. That is, this title doesn't do it justice; after all, 'catholic' is not going to appeal to many. I'd name it 'Evolution vs Science'. You, of course, value explanatory power. This has explanatory power for the last few hundred years. I don't necessarily agree with it all; in fact one of my comments earned me a 'Take your complaints elsewhere', but it's three hours (and twenty minutes! -- see, I lied) of potentially world-changing information.
Now to search that world heavyweight championship match, Lennox vs Dawkins!

A special thanks to both , but especially to Stephen Meyer. Although I'm not a scientist , I've always had had an interest in it. After watching the video "The Information Enigma" , I was completely floored at how
lack-less in substance naturalism is at explaining any of their main principles of their Ideology. Yes , science
demonstratively shows a Creator and Intelligence if you rationally evaluate it without bias or impiety.
