- 🔥Welcome back to The Iron Lobby, the home of Retro-Modern fighting game enthusiasts! Today, we're diving into the world of Shoto characters across various fighting games. Who will reign supreme? 🏆
From the early days of Street Fighter II to the latest releases, Shoto characters have always been a staple in fighting games. I played 10 different characters from 10 different fighting games. In this video, we'll rank the top 10, analyzing their strengths, weaknesses, and unique abilities. Will your favorite make the list? Watch to find out! 👀
Top 10 Shoto Characters From Fighting Games: Who Reigns Supreme? (2024) [OVERVIEW]
00:00 Intro
01:27 Garou: Mark of the Wolves
02:23 Killer Instinct
03:20 Vampire Savior: The Lord of Vampire
04:48 Samurai Shodown
06:30 Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[cl-r]

12:51 King of Fighters XV - Hry
I realized too late in the process I called an attack by the wrong name. So the "the Ranki Ryuu Geri" is the name of the Tatsu and not "Kurenai Sandan Geri" for one of the characters!
If you enjoyed the list, please subscribe! I'd like to do more :D
Stop fighting games... Garou is like SF 3.3... You only looking about graphics because you play Last Blade 2. Play real games as KOF98 or Samurai Shodown 2 and 4. The last Samurai Shodown is very bad, too simple, very far of real SNK games like Garou MOTW, very far of all the other Fatal Fury (Real are from FF1 to FF3).
Mizoguchi from Karnov's Revenge. Also the 2 Ninja's in Ninja Masters.
I'll have to check them out!
What I find neat about shotos is how their "general style" have to be adapted into each game. Guilty Gear is very fast and agressive, so Ky got more tools to open the opponent when compared to Haohmaru, who's in a methodical game where one mistake can lead into a single slash taking away A LOT of health, so all he needs is his strong slash
Exactly! They are each tailored to their games, which made it interesting to see what changes they made to the "format." In some cases, it is just flair, but in others. it changes a lot with their playstyle.
Aye my fellow brother or sister in Neutral, you better preach that fine word! you bring up an excellent point that I had forgot about
This aspect is what I like the most also
Demitri and Robert Garcia are my personal favorite shotos. They’re among my mains in the games I played them in and in general the few shotos that I main.
Besides that, I really like Street Fighter’s shotos when they’re outside of Street Fighter, lol. I’ll play Ryu in stuff like MVC1, MVC3 and Smash but I rarely play him in actual Street Fighter, same goes for Ken, Akuma and Sakura in the crossovers they’re in.
Demitri is really good, honestly ranking the characters was one of the roughest parts, because they all brought something really neat to the table. Robert Garcia is one I actually want to play more.
That's interesting! I'm a longtime Chun-Li main so I'll play the others more often in the other games too. I beat MVC1 the other day with Ryu (and Mega Man), but that was after many attempts at Onslaught with various teams (and my first time really playing that one.) He's SO GOOD.
@@TheIronLobby Yeah, MVC1 and Power Rangers Battle For the Grid have my favorite versions of Ryu, he’s very fun in both of those.
what a great list! that's definitely the type of character I try to gravitate towards when jumping into a new fighter. though sometimes it can be hard to find something like that in one of the more offbeat fighters like the Jojo's games!
Oooh, I didn't even glance at Jojo! Yeah, it's fun to see how similar they can be despite the different types of fighters.
Great video. Looking forward to seeing more.
Thank you! I had a lot of fun with this one :D
The Shoto is my favorite Archetype and I've been playing it, getting made fun for it, winning/losing with it, and loving most (not all of them) characters that use this style. I just saw your video in my recommended but you just got a subscriber and please keep this type of video going. I actually might make something like this on my channel. I appreciate you giving love to this playstyle so much!
Glad you enjoy it!
If you like fighting game lore, then you ought to enjoy One Must Fall: 2097, a giant robot fighting game for DOS. It may take some tinkering to get running, but it's officially freeware, so you could get it easily. There's a Shoto mech called the Jaguar that has a forward leap, projectile laser, and an anti-air. The anti-air is more defensive. It's an easy-to-execute air grab that throws the opponent. The Jaguar is back in One Must Fall: Battlegrounds and is also just as much a Shoto, there.
The other fighting game I'd recommend would be TMNT: Tournament Fighters for SNES. Leonardo is a total Shoto. He has a projectile, Shining Cutter. He has a forward multi-hit, (no giggling!) Endless Screw. He has an anti-air, Roto-Cutter, which is insanely versatile, powerful, and safe. I bet you could win a round using only that. I tried to get better by playing on a harder AI difficulty and AI Leo would constantly beat me with that move.
Did Mortal Kombat have a Shoto? There's lots of projectiles and forward attacks, but what about anti-air? Is the famous MK uppercut that everyone has, as effective as a dragon punch?
I'll have to check those out! I've seen TMNT played, but haven't played it myself. One Must Fall: 2097 I haven't even heard of :O As far as Mortal Kombat, from what I've read, Johnny Cage is sometimes listed, but yeah, the uppercut in MK can serve that function.
I’m surprised akatsuki from either his own game or under night wasn’t mentioned he’s super shoto in undernight lol
My first awesome FGC find of the new year!! New sub for you! Can't wait to see more! I play shotos like all the time. I'm an Akuma main by profession, but lately I've been branching out, especially in anime fighters. In GG Strive, I started out with Gio and switched to Sin, in Granblue I played Ferry, Zeta, and my favorite is the zoner Metera. I always tell my friends start with the high damage easy character, find your playstyle and footing, then after having played a few matches, you can see what other characters that might fit your playstyle that you'd like to try. Shotos are great for that. Hell, like me you might find you like Shotos for some games and others for others, or you'll switch to a more refined shoto, like Ryu or Ken to Sakura or Akuma. Or find you like slower play or more combos. The beauty of the Shoto is they are good at everything but don't truly excel at anything, until the more specialized variants at least.
That's why I started with Shoto. I've been playing these sorts of games for a long time, but I wanted to study the genre in more depth than I would while streaming or as a casual playthrough. I figured a good start would be to look at the Archetypes and try a bunch of different characters, see how they operate and decide what I really like.
@@TheIronLobby That's great! I'll be here for the journey!
Fun Fact: Hyde and Gran have the same ENG voice actor.
9S is one of his most popular roles.
:O Nice!!!
Cool video 🎉
Thanks 😁
Top 10 Shotos? How many versions of Dan are there? 😂
There's never enough Dan! Mwahahaha!
Eiji Shinjo or Kayin Amok from Battle Arena Toshinden are great Shoto characters too. (If you want to include boss characters, Sho Shinjo is another good character.)
I feel like you kind of gave up on the end there, like the "no main characters" rule being forgotten around the 6th entry. However, I would like to see more lists from you when I get the chance.
Edit: I didn't see hear the asterisk the first time, my bad.
It's all good! I'm new to this myself.
Great !!
Do you think the choice of characters you've made can also be applicable no matter the game they make an appearance ? (Especially when you know some of them have different moves depending on the game ex : Ky or Iori)
Yes, what I was hoping to examine is how they took the basic idea of what a Shoto does and it's general strategy, but then take into account how it has changed and fits into that fighting game's system. That's why I tried to choose different sorts of games, so a person could say, 'Okay, let's look at this game's version of a shoto' you can pick apart the basics, but then see how the moves work, what else they have, and how that either changes or reinforces the strategy.
I hope that made sense!
I am looking at this list from perspective of a Strive player and I have to point out that Strive shotos prefer the low attack as neutral skip - Stun Dipper with Ky, as it makes them dodge most of the projectiles, and Vortex with Sol. Ky was infamous for how safe and easy Stun Dipper was, but Sol is funny because his Vortex is a full screen button
Also I am terrified of the world where Ky`s barrelroll becomes an overhead lol
Oooh, since I had to look at this as a 'beginner' (otherwise it would have taken me weeks to make this list), I didn't realize how powerful the Stun Dipper truly is. With that being the case, then, yes, likely Ky's section would have been a bit different and this makes me want to go back and play him some more! Thank you for the context!! I try to make sure I have an understanding before going in, but I figured I'd miss some details!
@@TheIronLobby fun fact - Sol and Ky are rivals and Sol especially doesn't like Ky and his fighting style (That ye never goes all out), so its kind of funny that Sol's projectile is one of the few that actually catch Ky during Stun Dipper!
@@JetstreamRat Oh, that's a good addition! Yeah, I've played more of the early Guilty Gear games. I have a lore video with Ky and Sol on my idea list, but I'm not sure when I'll start working on it.
Otherwise, I agreed with most of your picks.
So glad Iori Yagami made number 1 ❤.
In most kof games (depending on year or roster) my team is usually Iori, K' and Terry.
:D Niice!!!
Akatsuki from UNiB is also a Shoto
🔥Video, fam. You forgot Mario though. 😜 I'm kidding. Will def probably subscribe. And a real one gone always include Breaker's Revenge. So then you're def a real one. Sho is better Ryu. 🤫🤣
Ah, yes, apologies to Mario for his slight :D As far as Sho, yeeees, he's really fun!
Oh yeah, forgot Mario & and Dr. Mario in Smash Bros were both overtly shoto-like, even with Ryu & Ken also being in Smash. Mii Swordfighter can also be configured as a shoto-like character.
Robert Garcia!
A WOMAN THAT KNOWS ABOUT FIGTHING?
* insert meme of lego batman falling in love with a love song *
I do know about fighting!
@@TheIronLobby SHE KNOWS!!
Obviusly Shao will got that higer, he is the most break character in that game ☝️🤓
Haha! True
Do You By Chance Know A Game Called Persona 4 Arena Ultimax🤔
I have heard of it, but I haven't played! Is it good?
Kaede & Haomaru are both main characters which broke your first rule of no main characters. Haomaru is especially the character as he is featured on the cover art of each Sam Sho game and he's literally the face of Samurai Shodown.
Oh, I should have been more specific! No characters that I play as a main. In other words, if I have already spent hours of playtime on a character, I didn't think it fair to compare them to others that I only played for thirty minutes! Yes, they are the main characters of the respective games.
@@TheIronLobby You were clear
