don't let the wheel fall off, heat it up 1ST!

Yes I have a 2016 Ford F550 V8 6.7L 4x4 XLT Flatbed Tow Truck with 317K miles & My steering feels loose to. What do you recommend on how to fix it?
Really?
@@PowerStrokeTechTalkwARod Yes, it's always done that since I bought it. With play in the steering wheel
Very interesting
Looks like another candidate for the 18S08 recall on Fusions and MKZs. Looks just like the original 24mm short steering wheel bolt used on those Fusions and MKZs involved in that recall. The replacement bolt is twice the length of the original if I remember correctly. And it's a TX-55 I think? Look up that recall and you'll see exactly what I'm talking about. And yes, I've seen a couple of these trucks coming in with the steering wheel loose like that before.
Why didn’t you put fresh locktite on the bolt?
This is a common problem in a number of ford over the last few year there was not enough loc tite and not enough torque to the bolt lol ford blamed it on the bolt being to short but there is only a 1/2 of theards in the column so the bolt was fine. There was a recall for some but not seen a recall for super duty yet but have seen 2 now myself. Thanks for sharing
WHat I want to know is how you remove the wheel, reassemble, and don't understand how it is loose. It's one bolt, only one. Maybe they were scared they'd strip the bolt out or something if they tightened it back down.
Yeah...that wheel has been off since she left the factory...they have checks and balances at the factory to ensure things like that are torqued correctly.
Yeah that’s weird definitely was taken off before. There’s no way that should shaking like that. Love your video buddy. A lot of good info
I bet someone had the wheel off in the past. Looks like that was loose for some period of time judging by the marks on the hex shaft and the few metal fragments on the clock spring, along with that unclipped piece of column trim you pointed out.
I have had a few vehicles of a few brands that had loose steering wheels and no repairs ever in that area. One owner told me that they bang wheel when frustrated in traffic A LOT. Makes me think that might be the reason for some of the other loose ones I ran across.
Guy that tightens the steering wheel bolt banged in sick that day. So it got a hand-tight job and sent it.
chop sticks work well and give you a longer device to push with.
Had that happen to a family member's Ecoboost Navigator. Long story short? Do not use the steering wheel as a drum no matter how good the tunes are. The nut vibrated loose from hitting it once to many.
No, it wasn't me. I would never do that.😙
Super interesting video. Always amazed how much work you do one-handed.
Classic ill fix it (customer says) .... oh crap i messed it up more better take it in and play dumb 🤦♂️🤷♂️
Ty for your service to society and keep up the good work sir!!
I’m pretty sure it didn’t get out of the factory like that. The guns they use to torque these have a monitor that won’t let the vehicle go to the next station if they are over/under torqued. There are times when a supervisor or group leader can bypass it but they should be fixing it down the line.
That's obvious PTT... Which means I'm more impressed they were able to get as much installed correctly as they did
My 19 fell off on the highway with 2000 miles on it pulling a load. That was fun. Ford said it wasn’t tight from factory.
Wow
Red loctite is known to loosen up all the time… the world is an imperfect place… said no one ever!!!
It is pretty common to upgrade the steering wheel from plastic to leather, or heat, or something. Wondering if this is the original wheel that shipped with the truck? I could see the wheel loosening if the bolt was not torqued...
Tow truck, plain jane
Someone did something , just sayin 🤔
Very nice job, a simple fix. Thanks for sharing ARod
When the driver comes to pick it up, watch him get in. I bet he climbs in pulling himself from the steering wheel. That's why theres grab handles.
The steering wheel should be able to take the force of a driver using it to get in. After all, if the power steering pump failed, the driver would be reefing on the wheel. Also, the Ford grab handles are not particularly rugged, unfortunately.
@@tylermacconnell217 "should" ? When I worked on fleet vehicles we saw it all the time. It's usually that over weight short guy's truck that you're replacing columns because they broke the tilt wheel. Steering wheels and columns are not designed for lateral forces, only torsional. Big difference. Again that's why they give you a grab handle.
@@Itsa_Mea Guys have been pulling themselves in by the steering wheel for decades, and the manufacturers know this. Why not pull the A-pillar trim off and examine the small little bolts holding the grab handles on and contrast that to the steering wheel bolt. How many times can a 250lb dude grab that plastic handle and haul himself in vs the steering wheel?
@@tylermacconnell217 I'm only sharing my experiences and what I know. The steering wheel isn't a grab handle and things break when you use them as one. Use the grab handle not the wheel.
@@Itsa_Mea To each their own. You can advise me not to, but everyone else will continue to do the same. Most steering wheels do not ever have a problem. PTT w/ Arod said this is the first one he has seen. I suspect in this case someone had previously removed the steering wheel for some reason and not properly re-tightened it.
This just happend to my 2017 f350sd, and the wheel has never been off. Watched another video of the fix. Added lock tight, reinstalled and torqued. It did have a very small spot of red lock tight from the factory, maybe not enough? Cant believe it loosened up either, but it did at 64k miles. I work construction and I ask around and some folks new of this. I guess the manufacturer got away with not doing a recall again.
You triggered my perfectionism I would have been at the wire wheel cleaning off the old thread locker then a good dooching of brake clean then smother the bolt in blue locktite LOL
...hey dont forget about behind the scenes....lotta stuff yall don't see 🫡😉
4:00 - You know... it makes me feel a little less stupid seeing you struggle with that plastic retainer/sleeve/whatever for the horn connector... that was definitely me when I changed out my base XL steering wheel for an OE leather-wrapped wheel from a Lariat
Also, the steering wheel is a *BEYOTCH* to get off with just hand tools, and unless you've got some extremely strong legs and incredible amount of leverage to smash your legs into the bottom of the steering wheel, you need a second person working against the torque wrench to get that 52 foot pounds that the shop manual calls for as far as torque spec (again... ask me how I know lol)
But like you said, I have a feeling somebody took this wheel off, then tightened it with a tiny ratchet and a socket that kinda-sorta fit... because that bolt ain't working itself loose at 52 foot pounds
😮 I have this exact problem And I have never taken the steering wheel off It has 18000 on it right now and I picked it up at 5000 from another driver
22 f350 6.7 powerstroke 4 door long bed 4x4 work truck
I think someone's tellin a fib on that one.
Could've been searched by the fuzz and was too embarrassed to say. When I was 17/18 me and a buddy got pulled over and the cop decided we were up to no good and tore his car apart right on the side of the road. When they didn't find anything they left us with the steering column completely apart along with few others spots. Definitely a learning experience for us lmao.
Someone has ANGER MANAGEMENT issues and would pull and yank and twist the steering wheel when they would get pissed while driving ! Over time that is the results….my Dad !
Either a Monday or Friday truck for sure lmao.
The result of massive death wobble!
Seen it a lot over the years it’s from the driver using the steering wheel to pull them selves into the vehicle
I actually had the same thing on a 17 f-150 a couple years ago
My 2016 Ford f150 lariat had that same issue, the nut was loose for some reason. I applied some red thread locker and tightened it. So far so good .
It’s definitely been tampered with
Reminds me of the old GM steering wheels coming in like that.
My 2016 Ford f150 lariat had that same issue, the nut was loose for some reason.
Had it happen to my 2021 F250. It loosened up after about 20k miles. Fixed it myself. My truck is a covid truck and it has all kinds of small issues.
Unreal
1000% someone has been in there and finger tightened the bolt. Them forgot to hit it with an impact.
Unrelated question, I’m putting my’05 F350 6.0 SRW CC back together after a bed rail replacement and having difficulty with the rear wiring harness.
Of course I didn’t write it down or take a picture of it, 🤦🏻♂️
I need the where/order the connectors go back together. For the brake, reverse, backup sensors & license lights. I have a subscription to Alldata but don’t know the Ford name for this assembly to look up the diagram.
Since you speak “Ford” could give me the name of the assembly so I can reinstall it.
Thanks & see ya!

With the shroud disrupted on the rear left it seems the wheel has been off for whatever reason. Torque spec on the bolt is 35ft lb.
My guess is a road rager that banged the wheel left and right as he was going down the road and it eventually loosened it. He would have been shocked if it popped off on him. LOL
That’s xfiles level there
Somebody’s been there before!!!!
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot...
Sumbudy beenin derr beefor...
Just sayin...lol
Never have I seen that. Someone was messing around in there.
There are processes in place on the line that almost guarantee this doesn't happen. However...... people are human and sh!t happens
Man i have seen two late model f150s with this problem. Only thing they had in common is suspension damage. One had a bent frame and the other not so severe
If there was a prior owner they might have had a raptor or platinum wheel on it before they traded it in, then returned it to stock and didnt torque it right. I have the raptor wheel on mine, if i recall it needs a new bolt each time and 44 ft/lb. Because they took that clamshell apart they probably used a grey goose harness for raptor paddle shifters or their heated wheel harness, its a butt to get back together.
Yo ARod , maybe in the future yu could possibly make a video if yu have not already done , on a sloppy shifter on the column. My 17’ 66k miles just purchased has way too much play in it and want it fixed asap
Yea theres a new cable for that
A-Rod you would make a good alumiduty detective
You can smoke the competitors just buy one glance. This guy will navigate away from your shop from now on 😎👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
This happens when you get super mad and start jerking on the steering wheel
You mean the RR wheels omg 😲
Arod, did you check history on oasis? Anything related to HVAC, blend doors? Dash been removed for any reason?? I had a truck that had the dash out at another dealer and they smashed the wires for the driver's side speakers, everything else worked. Maybe another tech forgot to tighten it?
Nada
We had f150 come back, we did repair on left front suspension (from accident). We never touched steering wheel, he come back week later with loose steering wheel.
Whaaaaa
My 2020 Jeep Cherokee had the same problem new car and the steering wheel was lose just low this
I have seen alot worse than that come off a gm truck line before.
And that makes this one ok???
Had it happen to my 2011 also but I’m the second owner and don’t have the complete history.
Would this one have a recall on the steering wheel bolt? My '16 Fusion had the steering wheel bolt replaced with a T55 bolt as part of a recall.
Answering my own question. Looks like it was just Fusions and MKZs. See also recall 18S08.
Yepp, thanks for coming back & krepin it 💯
What year is the vehicle and how many miles does it have?
I was wondering the same thing
Hey man. Unrelated question. On the 2019 f350 dually, what is the safe temperature to check transmission fluid? Is it between 196 and 215, or can you check it when the 5he blue bar on the gage is at normal temperature?
Yes 196 is sufficient
somebody had some road rage?? took it out on the wheel?
Ever add trailer tpms harness what is all that is needed?
Sure havent
From what I understand I have to wire every trailer with harness and receiver? I figure if anyone would know it’d be you lol
I havent ever been asked b4 about that.
BUTCH WAS WAS WAS THESE ✌😎
Did you de-enrgize the air bag 1st.?
Theft attempt or recovery?
Awfully suspicious
🤨🤔🧐
Heavy person pulling on the wheel to get in and out
Big gurl, lotta curb weight
Second time I’ve seen this. Seen it happen to a CZcams hot shot driver going down the road.
Thats the 1st one i had, i was like waaa
