  • It is very common for ketogenic folks to lose a lot of weight rapidly then get stranded before reaching a goal type weight. WHY? In this video Dr CYWES explores common reasons why this occurs and discussed the more nuanced issues related to CARBADDICTION. If you are stranded or going backwards, use this video to change your approach from a diet-based to a substance abuse-based plan. Please leave comments.

    I listened to your perspective and applied it immediately. I had cooked a steak for dinner and planned on eating the whole thing. After listening to your post, I served up my steak but cut it in half. I focused on just eating the one half portion. I found it so amazing that I was satisfied with the half portion. Now I have the other half waiting for my next meal. Thank you for a simple way to accurately adjust the volume we eat. Great tip! And completely satisfied.

    I just had an appointment with Dr. Cywes and of course it was wonderful... i highly recommend him to you. I've been one year carnivore now and my weight hasn't changed but my body has. very strong and muscular. so the weight loss for me isn't an issue. My appointment with him helped me to discover i wasn't completely fat adapted and that i was very possible over eating protein (beef) to compensate. He suggested i add more fat and I have immediately felt more energetic. I had thought i was good just eating chuck roast and the occasional rib-eye... but everyone is different. at this moment i have added pork belly into my eating and cut back on the amount of beef. My body craves the fat like i wouldn't believe. I eat the fat pieces, drippings, and even cut the fat off the beef before i eat the red meat. Again.... i thought I was all good but Dr. Cywes directed me different and I'm having amazing results. Looking forward again.... excited for the future. TY Dr. Cywes!

      @@angies5082 my appointment was online through whatsapp. it was easy. I had labs done over the past year that i provided and we went through them. There are different body types and everyone is different. I am sugar dominate and in theory, i have excess sugar in my blood stream and little in my cells (no current test for amount of sugar in your cells). So my liver is using excess protein and turning it into sugar. Hence not fat adapted. With more time and fat i know i will get there. 5 years into keto (4 years at normal BMI) and I still have to track my calories. I’ve tried intuitive eating a couple times and my weight has gone up every time. I do allow myself to have “high calorie days” if I’m feeling low energy or special events like my birthday or a holiday but they are 100% carnivore days. Eating higher protein has helped me control my hunger as well.

    The 'large plate' phenomenon is relatively recent - it started in restaurants in the 1980's as a way to present posh meals/portions - like a frame for a painting. Then houseware stores started selling the large plates for the home. I've got dinner plates from my grandmother / great grandmother - these are remarkably small. Portion size cannot be underestimated. Hubby and I started ordering a single meal to share or strictly order appetisers when we visited restaurants in the USA because after the first meal we ordered we realised how crazy big the portions are!

    I think it’s important to note to not reduce the protein when you cut back on your food. Keep your protein at 1 gram per ideal body weight (in pounds) and reduce the consumption of fat you are eating. Use the fat on your body as energy not the fat you’re consuming.

    • @rontiemens2553
      @rontiemens2553 Před 11 měsíci +3

      True, but sometimes you have to look at the protein and reduce that as well, as Dr. Cywes points out in his videos where he discusses protein quantities, and how much that can vary by individual. He also points out that excess protein gets converted to sugar, so this is something we have to get right. Rules of thumb such as “X grams per pound of “ideal” body weight” are helpful starting points, but we have to fine tune that by experimenting on ourselves. Bottom line, if you still have a X lbs of fat to lose, and if you are stalled, then EVERYTHING has to be considered for possible reductions and improved management, including protein.

    • @juliebutler8241
      @juliebutler8241 Před 11 měsíci

    Thank you, Dr. Cywes, there is so much conflicting info out there in the carnivore community. I was on a ketogenic food plan for several years, and have been a member of "the clean plate club" for last 65 years...I'm 71 and been through every diet plan available. Keto and carnivore has me stalled....pure carnivore for 6 wks- down 8 lbs from 190 to 181 and it seems like such a struggle to find the answer for me. My roommate has eaten exactly what I do plus she has beer and wine..lost 25 lbs. Now at her weight in high school and happily slender. I have around 35 lbs to get to good weight for possible hip joint surgery....some videos tell me to eat more fat, others say more protein, others say just eat more of everything. Difficult to navigate and personalize for me. I intermittent fast every day, between 16 and 24 hrs between meals - didn't think I have been binging but maybe I have. I also do 36 - 48 hour water only fast every other week. I have several other health benefits that I am very happy about - weight reduction is the only thing I'm trying to solve. I will do what you suggest - thank you

      I write down my meals - it's not hard as I only eat twice a day and I'm carnivore so that keeps my meals very simple. My weight loss is very stubborn but I do find reducing portion size and reducing fat to be the key.
      I only eat twice a day - keep the protein up. I fast about 20 hours per day with one, over 24 hr, fast per week.
      Just ignore all the people who say to eat more fat - it doesn't work for some of us, it's unfair, but it's just how it is.
      Have a couple of "cheat" days a week when you eat some yummy fatty meats then back to the lean meats.
      I'm 51, female and am through menopause (thank god).

That taught me that you can overeat on a virtually 0 Carb diet And your health can get worse not Better.
    I started tracking and making sure my macros were in order even though I added some vegetables back in, I'm still under 20 carbs a day..... I figured out what calories and macros kept me IN Maintenence and then dropped them 200 calories a day. The weight started to come off again.

My family is aggressively concerned that I am depriving her of nutrition because I won't feed her veggies. I try to explain why sugar, bread and even veggies with their anti-nutritents and inflammatory properties are not good for her, but no one can accept it, it's just not what they were brought up to believe. I'd like for her to have a nutritional panal to show everyone that she is thriving. Her cognitive skills are off the charts, she is speaking full sentences and even does some sign language. Everyone says she is ahead in her brain function by far, and I think it's because she is eating a proper human diet and getting adequate animal based protein and fat nutrient dense nutrition. This is just my experience, and we are all different. I eat when I get hungry and I eat until I'm full. I get hungry two times most days and the time ranges with a 6 hour eating window. By ranges, I mean that the times of hunger are never the same, they seem to change from early to later for the first eat, over 5 or 6 days. I have recently had a couple of OMADs that occurred naturally. I expect that as time goes by, those will increase.
    I think my body is adjusting to the nutrients I'm consuming and getting better at utilizing them.
    Where we tend to fall short is in expecting our desired result to show up at a certain point in time, as suggested by promoters/influencers; and when it fails to show up on our demand, we get upset and disappointed. Realizing that our bodies work for our survival . . . they are set up for that purpose, then we feed them a bunch of shit and expect to survive, well, that's just how stupid we are.

    While eating carnivore, consuming as much as I wanted worked great, until I was down 60 lbs. Then I stalled, for about a year. Now, I've started tracking calories to give myself an idea of just how much I was consuming. It was eye opening. I was still emotionally eating but only high fat meat. I've added in a small amount of low carb, green vegs, like asparagus and Brussels sprouts (I guess this is ketovore) and now I'm back to losing weight. I use a kitchen scale and keep a food diary now. That accountability keeps me from snacking. I use coffee in the mornings, and mint tea in the evenings, as my "bridge" (thank you Dr. Cywes!) and it's working out very well. It seems very common for those on an animal based diet that they over cook. Their desire to eat just turns off. So they have left overs.
    It is also easy to not eat a meal because you are not hungry.
    This seems to occur naturally without planning or thinking about it. This is not everyone… for some reason.
    I believe we need to our oscillate between high fat and high protein. High being a relative term. Eat leaner meat Vs eating fattier meat. This has your body unable to establish a trend. So the high energy ( fat ) days keep your metabolism elevated on days you eat more protein.
    Exercise is important. Walking is a simple way to begin. Add basic at home exercise.

    It seems to me, if a person doesn't eat for 2 straight days, they're either homeless, are on meth, never workout, or have an eating disorder. Honestly, this is going into dangerous territory here. Speaking as a mixed-race Japanese American, eating disorders among Japanese women is epidemic, so I'm not sure I'd want to take the advice of someone from Japan. That would be a little like asking fashion advice from someone stuck in the 80s. People constantly point to the Japanese as the ideal society when it comes to body composition. But the ugly truth, coming from someone whose mother is from Japan, is that the Japanese, particularly the women, go to unhealthy extremes to be tiny. They even have calf muscle removed because if it's big, it's bad. Muscle is no exception. When I was in my 40s and was very lean and muscular, my mom looked at my broad ripped back and gasped in horror. I've never done steroids in my life, so we are talking about a back that you might see on a world class runner in track and field. They all do strength training and have well muscled shoulders, arms and abs, but they are, by no means, freakishly big. That's comparable to what my back looked like. I also was never a bodybuilder. She explained that in Japan, the beauty standard is more like how closely a woman resembles a child, and that muscles, tan skin, tattoos and piercings of any kind are ugly and are considered mutilation. But, removing portions of your calf muscle to be smaller is fine. For people who are famous for moderation, OCD is actually cultural. The average Asian American student studies more than twice as long as the average White student, so there really shouldn't be any big mystery about why Asians excel in math and science. If you practice the guitar half as long as Segovia, you likely will never be nearly as good. Anyway, my point is, they starve. They eat things like konjac noodles, which basically pass through you, drink green tea to excess, and eat mostly vegetables to starve themselves down to a pipe cleaner size. If you are going to starve yourself, and not eating anything for days IS starvation, if you are athletic, I would not go past 1 day of not eating, and it should never be on a day you train. You can't have a bigger furnace if you don't have the supplies to build it. Doing cardio only burns, like he said, the sugars stored in the body. If you want a more efficient furnace that burns a lot more, even when you're reading a book on the couch, you need to build muscle, which is hungry and needs feeding. Fat just sits there in storage, taking up space and wreaking havoc. Resistance training is really important, not only for looking healthier, but also getting the body processes to work better as well. If you are a sugar addict, wait until you get a load of training endorphins and blissful, uninterrupted sleep.

    I needed this! I've been suspecting that the stall I am in had something to do with portions. But I was watching other Ketovores and they eat more than I do. But portions are still too big for me. So I've started cutting back on portions. My husband and I already share meals when we go out or if I'm with my daughter I'll tell the server to bring me a to-go container as soon as she sets down the meal. Thank you!

    The old way of thinking comes through sometimes. Without giving my life story, I'll just say I've been basically carnivore for the past month with reduced hunger, quickly lost 15 lb and going longer between meals sometimes 25 to 28 hours. Not planned just not ready to eat. I need to lose about 35 lb to get my BMI into a healthy place. But it seems really strange to not want to eat. I will look back over a day or two and see I've only eaten six or seven hundred calories. I am not consciously tracking this but I've been part of the diet World long enough to know. And it worries me that I'm not eating enough! That I may not be meeting my nutritional needs. How Will I Know? EDIT... and right after watching this, I ran into episode 296 which explains about nutritional needs in the body recycling. I guess I just have to trust my body

Then I'll log approximately what i ate. 1 egg. 4 oz meat. I do it just to help me stay accountable and if i stall, it helps me troubleshoot.

Perhaps u can unpack variations in physiology?Also when I go completely Carnivore zero carbs my morning glucose goes high 105 only comes down early afternoon but on a GCM I get zero spiking when I eat in fact lunch causes my glucose to come down ~weird!

    I have the problem there is no satiety. At least I cannot get the effect without trickery. After water fasting the stomach is more responsive as being shrinked. But even it is shrinked I can feel the addition of the immediate binge addiction adding to the now achieved possibility to feel that natural satiety. But this is the best option. I think 4 eggs two times separated with at least 4 hours will do the trick. There is turmeric on those eggs with some green leaves. Basic electrolytic and multivitamin supplements are on the table too. I need to keep the stomach in shrinked state. I think more than 6 hours between intakes would be much better option to recreate that satiety feel.
