I love the way they kinda bag on the guitars and then commence to having the most inspired and best sounding jam I've ever heard them play together đ€Ł
saaaaame
Yes, the guitars make more sense than the mouths here.
Fuckin exACTLY! đłđł
fossilmatic Genius comment; thank you.
Yep, and then the Captain realises ... oh wait, I,m supposed to be selling these.
15 minutes of bashing the Dano guitars for not knowing what they are, then proceed to have the best sounding jam ever.
Could in its own way, be the best endorsement they could have gotten?
They spent 15 minutes bashing the guitars that caused the most interesting guitar demo video they've had all year. Sometimes you just want something different and these are different. Just a different color to tip the brush into. I love dano's btw if you couldn't tell lol.
To be honest, these sounds way more interesting than all the LPs and strats.
i love it, so unique yet diverse
I just got one today and it sounds great it has that unique sounds i can't get enough of I got the black 12 string
@@toonieluvgaming8939 I just got one of those in black, also. What a cool little guitar. It isn't very luxurious, but it is fun to play.
@@Kdschaak yeah it just got a sounds that I can vibe with and create some interesting riffs
When you've had Fender, Gibson, and PRS models for years and that's all you've heard, I suppose it's easy enough to get bored. Like eating nothing but Oatmeal with either Maple Syrup or Bacon for 40 weeks, you're _probably_ going to get bored of it, no matter how good it was to start with. Even me playing my 1966 Kay, its tone (both for what it is, and also what it isn't) helped me gain some appreciation for Strats.
I'm one of those guys who likes Mosrite models (another company who can have an impressive and interesting tone in the right setup,) and I often enough have found Stratocasters boring, like if I play one, I'm gonna fall asleep while "driving." They're the poster child of a model (next to the Les Paul) that everyone and their great grandma knows. As such, they've gone through a lot of music, and how they're played often seems highly predictable, instead of being spontaneous.
Admittedly, I suppose part of that's a lack of my own talent in Stratocaster Land. Either that, or it's a deep-seated belief that the model's just not for me in most situations. But I also think it's because the model had _so_ many people play it, that I don't feel like I'm going to be adding much (if anything) to music by playing precisely what many other people are. It just doesn't seem unique enough, nor does it seem to be my thing (usually.) Then again, what am I even doing musically, except nothing but bedroom playing, with rare exceptions of uploading a badly recorded video?
I'm probably one of very few outspoken people who thinks of Strats like this. I have _some_ level of appreciation for them, but that's after having compared them to both my 1966 Mosrite, and 1966 Kay. Both models sounds "dry" by comparison. The Mosrite's still more clean than Gibson's P90 pickups. (Mosrites never used P90s, they just look like they do.) The Kay sounds a bit like a discounted Fender, but with AWG 43 Wire and metal casing for their "Pancake" bobbin pickups. I don't know what magnets they used for their pups, but I suspect they might have been Ceramics. That's just speculation, though.
Having heard the Mosrite and Kay, I've realized that Fenders have a bit of a "wet" sound to them, even if it's a Stratocaster and not a Jaguar. That might not make sense tonally at first, because no one I've heard of seems to be using that term. But the tone of my Kay _sometimes_ leaves me feeling like "Agh, I wish I could drink in (listen to) the tone of a Fender right about now." I don't feel that way with the Mosrite, because the pickups are far more punchy and ready to overdrive an amp; it's a different kind of "dry tone," the type that doesn't leave me wanting a Fender in its place.
I only bought the Mid 1966 Kay because I like how it looks aesthetically, and I like trying out less often played instruments. The Kay is an Old Kraftsman (Spiegel Catalog, first showed up for sale in the 1966 Fall - Winter Catalog) version of the Kay K-300 (not the 1962 - 1966 version with "Speed Bump" pickups that look like Gibson P13s, but the later type of the K-300 with pickups called "Cake Pan," "Pancake," and "Zippo" pickups) and this guitar has a surprisingly ornate pickguard. It's also often mistaken for a Vanguard model, but no sales catalogs indicate that.
The Kay does have a pretty thick (that is, depth - not width) V profile neck, which helped me realize that not all thick necks are bad, and they can actually be comfortable for me. I've never played a thicker neck - it's about 0.970" inches thick from back to front around the 1st fret. The V profile moves my hand into a nice spot.
"Why not just get an Epiphone or Squier?"
There's a difference between a Danelectro and a Squier/Epiphone: Danelectro's have originality. Sometimes, I just don't want a cheaper version of a Fender or Gibson. I want something that's cheap and yet ORIGINAL.
Think of Epiphone and Squier like McDonald's and Burger King. Sure they're cheap and affordable and everybody eats there. Can I eat somewhere else that isn't a sandwich? Like pizza? Or Chinese food? A DIFFERENT FLAVOR.
Danelectro is also made in korea: better quality than any chinese squier or epiphone
Will Fudge I got a Squier tele Classic vibe made in china, great quality some people even compared them with some fender MIM đ€
And the danelectro plays so much better
Also Epiphone is its own company
Excellent comment!!!
Finally, a guitar Rob can't instantly make sound like himself. Remember the Gretsch Streamliner he turned into a shred machine?
Lee thinks they are a bit shit and then inadvertently demonstrates exactly why they aren't. Inspired to do different stuff, which the strats and LPs don't seem to do. great video!
why does every one think every guitar has to sound like a bloody fender or gibson
Well said
I have had a danelectro, but I never liked it. The idea of having a different type of material guitar is cool and gives a unique tone. However the hardware is awful. It easily falls out of tune. It's not a guitar for everyone. I am sure for the same price you can find something better. Not only Gib or Fender. But other brands. Maybe even local ones.
I have three Danos and none were over $200. Not a lot of name brand Fenders or Gibsons in that price range.
Too right. My Danos sound cool.
"Everyone?" *Mosrite fan sits in the car outside the guitar store.*
They sound great. I wish you could have told is more about the range rather than focussing on slagging them off.
Exactly!
The limitations of this channel to this day.
Right ....
This is like watching star wars fans reviewing star trek
Jack Beale
Go on.. say it : Nerd Nonsense.
:-)
Itâs actually a little like watching Star Wars fans review Star Wars, too đđ
In not a fan of either and I know Star Trek is actually well written. Star Wars is for kids
A Channel you are old and no one cares
Yeah. Or vice versa. Itâs not doing the product justice. Heck itâs probably also like Kirk fans reviewing Picard era Star Trek as well as prequel loyalists vs original trilogy loyalists.
Umm that was one of ur best sounding jams
9:22 âYou see whatâs happening here, weâre picking up guitars and writing musicâ
This. This was probably the best jam they had in like 2 years
Own the tone my g
Ed Is Sick one of my favourites is the opening jam from their Marshall Astoria video
Yeah and guess what it has nothing to do with these shitty overpriced guitars
Actually, it has everything to do with those guitars. The sound you hear when you are just noodling on a guitar is almost completely responsible for anything new coming out of your playing. There is something to be said about when you pick up a guitar that doesn't have a genre association mired I your head, it will open up your thought process beyond what you would normally play as well. I certainly don't play the same licks on a Taylor Acoustic as I start to thumb out on say a Dusenberg Semi-hollow, and I don't play nearly the same music on a g-bender Tele as I do a normal tele....when you play a guitar totally foreign to your norm, you inevitably go further out of your normal realm.
The bari and the 12's sound good.
I thought the same thing man, very cool vibe especially with the bari on rhy n 12 on lead
Very dirty, nasty, awesome sound
Yeah. Those are 2 I have. They are both great. I really fell in love with the 12 string right away.
I have One of the 2010-ish era Baritones from them, and It's been noted as "One of the best clean tones I've ever heard" by three separate guitarists (One of which is a sound technician.) Good enough To the point I've been offered money for it. Not sure I'm sold on their normal guitars, though.
Dude all of them sound good
Around 10:00 ish, that's the coolest thing ever heard the two of you play and on "crap" guitars. Send me one if they don't sell. I'll play the shit out of it.
I agree, the whole part where they jam with the baritone and the 12-string sounds absolutely great. So mellow and hazy...
Sameđ
I agree
You should play 'shite' guitars more often... this is some of the best jamming you've ever done. The limitations of the instruments are keeping you from just making your usual shred runs - you're actually creating mood and melodies!
I think the expression Lee was looking for was "Low-Fi". There's and time and a place for the roaring JCM 800 rock tone. But there's also a time and place for the "wasp in a jam jar" sound where's its fuzzy and lacking definition.
That's kinda where Dan Electro guitars fall. They've got that super bright, jangley sound to them that give them character.
say what you like about them but they sound fantastic and very different to the usual!
You guys are dogging the guitars but you guys picked them up and started getting a great sound out of them together. A unique sound and that's what it is all about.
A month late so this will be buried in a flood of comments, but.. all through this video you guys are demonstrating amazing sounds that don't come out of strats, les pauls, tele's, etc, etc. These things are unique, and I think I am actually convinced to buy one now.
I think you've just sold a lot of Danelectro guitars. Most inspiring video I've seen you guys do. It's funny that your best and most creative jams were on guitars that you think suck :)
Danelectro guitars are like Lancia cars, they don't always work the way you'd like them to but they look great and enthusiasts love them.
May God have mercy on my soul, I had a Lancia Delta in the early 80s. You could actually hear it rusting away.
Ha! If I had to describe a car that I NEVER thought Lancia would make, it would be this one!
good lord, lancias in 80s and early nineties just rusted since the moment you drove them away from the car dealership. they were extremely well equipped cars but the poor quality of the metal killed the brand. Gotta thank fiat for that
@@takemebacktothen Must have been the acid rain in Britain - or just the old hearsay. My old man had a couple of Themas and a Kappa back in the day. Zero rust. A squeaky seat rail, a power window dropping out... things like that. But no rust and better equipped and performing than anything you'd get from other European manufacturers for that price...
... which brings me back to Danelectro and the part where the analogy fails: Danelectros are too expensive for what they are. For 200 EUR, I'd buy one in a heartbeat, but they're more like 500+.
The Stratos! Beautiful beyond belief!
I love Danelectroâs specifically because they donât sound like a Gibson or a Fender...itâs unique which is missing in the guitar world today.
I have one and for clean tones, you want a Danelectro
đŻ
*Plays some of the best lead he's played on one of these jams.* "I would NEVER play lead on a 12-string."
I personally loved all of them, specially the 12 string and the bariton
Plus these jams were so much better than when Lee just plays some random rhythm and Robs shreds mindlessly some nonsense on top of it
How about a 12 String Baritone
Are we just going to pretend like Rob didn't try to plug into the pickup switch at 4:30
Christian Lamm lmfao. Sorry kinda lateđ
I swear, these Danelectros made you two work harder....and you know what? You guys sound good, and it's like you're composing real music together. LIke you've done an honest day's work.
Oof, 12 string on lead is mmMmmMmmmmmmmmmmmm tastee
lol
Wow, you guys are nuts. Danelectro rocks. Nothing like them. I have an original '67 that sounds like nothing else. (in a good way)
Patrick M Iâm thinking about getting a 67â- Iâm definitely going after a dirty blues type vibe- is it for me?
"never gone near a danelectro in a video before. Possibly for good reason"
the snootiness begins
Yeah and they produce Chapman Guitars, which are the very definition of boring and generic. Hypocrites. I wouldnât go near a Chapman. Does the world really need another Tele knockoff?
Jason Allen well you know, if itâs not a shredder guitar with humbuckers, Rob thumbs his nose at it.
This is 10/15 minutes of snootiness,
does the Captain also drive a big, black, beemer 4x4?
I didn't think he was one of those types....
oh, & yea, thats the first time I heard Chap, venture out of his comfort zone of usual licks. I was impressed how the guitar made him change the way he plays. Thats a compliment.
The thing is that danelectros donât suit either of their playing styles. When i think danelectro either super clean jazzy playing or dirty broken blues.
jamie c - or jangle jangle indie rock, or surf rock...
They should've had Pete and Bea play them.
What Jamie said. Great for dream pop type stuff.
That said, the opening jam sounded pretty lovely.
The baritone jam was nice, too.
Leeâs dads money really showing up in his snootiness in this one!
loved the sound of that 12 string :)
Same here, thinking it's my next purchase.
@@meatrocket1 if u still haven't bought that 12 string yet musicians friend has them on sale for $299. $100 off!
From 8:40 to 10:30 thatâs EXACTLY what Danelectros cause... you easily start drifting away.
typically, the higher quality the instrument, the more exposed your flaws and nicks are going to be. These guitars are amazing, and sound alive and they breath. They donât sound like a wooden board with strings and magnets, but a living being and an extension of the player.
Listen to the Travelling Wilburys...... That's the sound of Danelectros, don't even think of trying your shredding malarkey. They are simply one of the best rhythm guitars ever. They are also brilliant for slide. Lipstick pick ups are best played clean, and have their own individual sound....
It's an acquired taste, like a fine wine my friends.
See "End of the Line" vid; czcams.com/video/UMVjToYOjbM/video.html . Jeff gives a lesson on how to strum that 12 string Dano and Tom Petty rocks the Longhorn bass! Not quite the S#!*t they are made out to be here.
fine wine? danelectro is like boones farm lol
That bit from 10:00 - 10:30 gave me chills. Some of the most unique jamming I've heard from these guys.
my own baritone give me chills when i play it, thereâs something about that low end that strikes through your bones.
It is a great tagline âDaneltro, when you want something a bit shit.â Then they make some sounds with it that give you chills. Fantastic.
I'm suprised at you guys, these guitars sound great. Danelctro is a iconic brand.
Keep in mind, Kashmir was recorded on a Danelectro. That renders the "they're shite" point invalid
Every so often I come back to this video just to hear that absolutely transcendent baritone/12 string jam.
Wow guys! Was captivated by the sound as soon as you played the first notes. These guitars sound so damn good!! Love the metallic/banjoish sound. Have to get my hands on one asap!!!
They may be "shitty" but you guys just had the coolest jams I've heard in one of your videos yet.
They were the budget guitars during the huge guitar rush following the Beatles. After the Beatles, every kid wanted a guitar for Christmas and many of those kids turned out to be famous. So I see what Captain is saying but I wouldn't put it like that. I'm a huge fan of Danelectro. There's just something about them. And they're a great first guitar. They can do light and single coily but they take overdrive very well also and can sound quite ballsy. They're super fun to play.
I think these Danelectros really brought your musical creativity up, i loved your gig in this video, sounded awesome
Monte Python time: Customer enters store: "Hello, I've been playing quality guitars for years, but I think it's time I step down to a shit guitar. Something with a dubious reputation for construction quality, and poorly set up by the factory, please. By the way, I'm a big fan of Jimmy Page." Lee: "Oh, yes; and welcome to Anderton's; we have several guitars that meet your criteria. I'm sure you'll hate owning one of them. Over here are the Danelectro models...and on that wall we have the Gibsons."
Love you Lee you remind me of monty python's humour it is the best English humour ever we in the states could only copy you even in music our ears suck
Sounds like two coconuts being banged together
Are you saying coconuts are migratory
I just want to sing
Harleys do suck i rode triumphs since i was 18 here in the US its hard to be passionate about anything that moves your soul but it is what always made me happy
They sound amazing.
Thanks for showing the respect Rob as these are iconic and deserve their place - kind of like a Mosrite or Rickenbacker! So glad there's more out there than just Fender and Gibson.
best electric 12 string for the money probably. it's either this or what... super expensive double SG? super expensive Rick?
My Danelectro is by far my favorite sounding guitar. I know it's made of cheap materials but the designers knew what they were doing. If your looking for a rock or heavy metal tone you're not going to like it but for the twangy raspy blues & slide that I love, it's perfect.
You guys are reeeaaally late to this party
Wow. They dirt one of my favorite guitars and my favorite motorcycle company in one video. Nicely done.
That twelve string, omg,, I love the way they bash it all the way through and commence to make the best sound I've heard in a long long time!!!
It's the law to tune the DE59 to DADGAD, the law I say!
YES!
Kashmir?
Vincent Prakash yes indeed
Yeah my DC is a designated DADGAD machine
why, you play just one song?
I started playing about 5 months ago. My instructor had a 12 string in his studio. Finally played it yesterday. Wow. The sound is divine!
I love my danelectro u2 tbh. It is an older one admittedly but I'd choose it over my strat any day
Yep. Same era that Danish Pete's U2 came from. I have that and a tele - the Tele's in Keef tuning after I broke my high E (which opened up my playing), and the U2 has some D'Addario Chrome 12s on it, in standard, for some fun.
i have a 99 or 2000 fifty six u2 , intonation is great , pickups are great
The '56 U2 reissue is my ultimate go to guitar. Whenever I pick it up I am instantly inspired to create something new & unique. There is a certain beauty to the tone that is like none other!
I would love to own one
I love dano's, it was my first guitar.
I love how the captain has this whole rant while trying not to say it's a shit guitar, and then proceeds to play some tunes and it sounds absolutely fantastic!
There is something so satisfying about coming back to this video and watch these two talk in circles, bash Dano, and reveal how little they know outside of their core brands, but then have arguably one of the best sounding jams on this channel.
Seriously some of the best jamming yâall have done in a while.
That soloing on the 12 string sounded awesome Chappers! you need one!
Agreed! I re-watched that section a couple of times.
He said he would never do lead on a 12, and my response was "why the hell not, that sounded awesome!"
John McLaughlin has been doing it for years, and he can make it absolutely rip...Chappers, the Gauntlet has been dropped, now get in the kitchen and make me an ML-12 or Dozen Ghosts
'John McLaughlin has been doing it for years'
Erm... Roger McGuinn...
"Sometimes something shit is what you need."
I feel like I should out that on a t-shirt... Or my CV...
Wow, just wow. The 12 and bari duet was incredible
I see Danelectro guitars as an awesome studio tool. I'd only use them in certain circumstances, but they are incredible in those certain circumstances!
The Captain was so Petty at the end.
My eyes rolled out of my head watching this and reading some of the comments.
Guitarists. Jeez.
Leo Cookman every guitarist here: "man Captain just doesn't get it man it's all about the feel man it makes you PLAY differently man just listen to one of their generic solos man I'd choose one these babies any day over a 10 000$ custom shop prs man...... Also playing slowly is a million times more difficult than playing fast man"
I actually would choose a Danelectro over a $10,000 PRS. I mean obviously Iâd take the PRS but then Iâd sell it and buy real guitars with the $10,000. PRS are fugly, especially the high end ones. I love the way Danelectros look and looks are important. Look at what Jack White has accomplished with âjunkâ guitars. Whatâs more is thereâs something to be said for being different. Look at Chapman guitars, theyâre as generic as generic gets. Iâd take a DE over anything Chapman produces.
Jason Allen prs guitars are objectively not fugly. If you think they are ugly Iâd hate to see what the inside of your house looks like
âI would never play lead on a 12-stringâ - well, you should, âcause the combo with the baritone on the base was DAMN good!
Guys, this is your best video, music wise. Your humor, ability, knowledge, and general interest and geekery about guitars carry every video, and you're great to watch, but the jams here went into something really creative, and tonally things are interesting here
This is one of the better sounding demos. The music and tones were cool. Seems like the unique character forced you 2 to think about music and not just what you normally play.
There's a video of Derek Trucks playing slide on a Danelectro and it's knarly as hell. Sounds incredible.
SkyDog59 Derek Trucks could make a shoe string sound incredible.
Danos are AMAZING for slide. Buddy of mine uses a U2 as a dedicated slide guitar, it's great.
"A wasp in a jam jar" I love that description, I will use it often!
I always enjoy demo clips when players really go for the feeling and music like this here - brings out the instrument qualities in ways that "factual" demos cannot. You've also hit on another often missed gem in demos - that each instrument inspires different music completely, things we'd never normally do on our regulars. Good work boys
Syd Barrett used one of those, the 3021 i think
Piper at the Gates of Dawn
That catâs something I canât explain.
Ice cream scuse me
i seen ya looking good the other evening
Always sitting by your side, always by your side
Piper at the Gates of Dawn I want to tell you a story about a little man, if I can
The inception of the Danelectro concept, was to provide inexpensive guitars to anyone that might have, or have not, an inclination to even attempt playing a musical instrument. This is why they were sold near Sporting Goods or Appliance in Sears & Roebuck & Montgomery Wards. Even if You personally didn't like the Guitar line, You have to give their marketing ploy an A+ & a 1/2 for the genius behind selling guitars in a department store, plus a mail-order, as opposed to even attempting to draw your parents into a music shop!!! As far as the Dano's are concerned, they always had an unique sound, due to their construction, which by the way, was another hit out of the ballpark. Say what You will, the works Barrett, Page & White accomplished on these Dano's, is enough alone to buy one!!! **P.s. By the way, i still have my first rig my parents bought from Sears & Roebuck. A Silvertone 1449 amp in case model from 1963. I still play it, and it works flawlessly!!!
Love my Danelectro, its sound is like a tele and strat combined.super ergonomic and lightweight too. Give this guitar a shot!
Yesterday I was watching Lee's videos of 2 or 3 years ago. It's incredible how much he improved like, this past year
Despite what you guys said about the guitars, the music at around 9 minutes was just lovely
Love that Baratone though it sounds spooky
I've always loved Danelectro guitars. I own three of them and I want another one. Great sounding, quirky, whimsical, and makes me want to play it a LOT. It's also interesting how a certain guitar can bring out certain qualities in your playing that can expand your vocabulary. I'm a lifelong fan!
My fav review done by these two. Dano guitars are MAGIC! You...write...music.
These were department store brands along with Airline and Silvertone. They were cheap, entry level, mass produced, guitars. "Kitsch" is a good word.
rcoveyduc - innovative for a department store brand, though. First electric 12 string, invented the baritone, first electric sitar, basically made the guitar amplifier a thing... not bad for a company that built guitars out of surplus scrap and counter tops.
For sure. I meant to say that I felt this is where Lee was going with his commentary. They were meant to be cheap compared to Fender and Gibson.
That doesn't people can't make great music on them.
Of course they can. Page used one throughout the 70s. It was what he used for Kashmir when in concert.
Lee you re an animal on that baritone
Not just on that baritone!! :-)
Love Danelectros, so delighted with my DC12
I like how you guys sound with these guitars. Super clean & very movie soundtrack sounding.
Rob! You have to play 12 strings more. That sounded amazing!
The DC 59/12 is incredible, most playable electric 12 and definitely the best value, this half -arsed review is pretty crap really, have you actually spent any time with them? try the DC59 six string through an AC30 top boost with blue speakers. And any electric 12s needs to go through Roland JC120s to be given half a chance.
tim groves Good call.. Nice to read something by someone who obviously knows what they're talking about.
By far some of the best stuff they've played, it breaks away from the norm...and that inherently makes them different.
The one I remember playing had crazy slippery yaw , all over the place, but I'm always on the lookout for a used one like that now! Say you what you will, they're good for sitting down and playing music!! Job ...done!
Gee, I'd bet that more songs have been recorded with a Danelectro than you could name. And if Page used them some when he was performing on his many studio gigs during the 60's, well that says volumes by itself...
And remember that the bass solo from My Generation was Entwhistle playing a Danelectro Long Horn bass! If anyone's played a more memorable bass solo that changed the way people thought about what a bass could do in R&R, I must've missed it!
If you two guys can design and produce a guitar that develops the same type of following at the same price break, do it!
It's just too fu*kin amazing. You're picking up some strange guitars and you create Sounds that are just awesome. Love you guys. Keep goin on!
Love my Dano I keep er' stung with 10's and open E tuning and just a pure source of inspiration . Probably the best jamming you guys have ever done
Every time I'm about to buy a new guitar, someone I subscribe to randomly uploads a video about that guitar.
Feels like a lucky charm, almost.
The 12 string and the semi hollow sound good.
LOL, Rick Beato loves his Danelectro.
been my main guitar for the past four years or so. brilliant stuff.
Just picked up a Danelectro 12SDC. I haven't been able to put it down for 3 days. I'm amazed at how good it plays, sounds and after several hours of playing it is holding tuning great!
I like the feel of my Danelectro.
That baritone sounds sweet. I really like that combination of downtuning and low output pickup on guitars.
Devin Townsend is a master of this - Casualties of Cool is bloody amazing.
These are the best guitar videos on CZcams. Lee is a true UK icon.
They sound crisp and clear. Beautiful definition
