@@schm147 I purchased the R7 when if first came out and returned it after only a day or two. The R7 is an awkward size. Take the grip, for instance. They made it larger to accommodate the LP-E6 battery, but it's too thick. I shot with the 7D Mk I and 80d before going mirrorless. Both of those used the LP-E6 battery, but somehow managed to be more comfortable. Also, it's quite large for an APS-C camera, almost like a DSL-R. If I want something that big, I can use either of my previously mentioned DSLRS. In addition, I didn't like the the joystick/dial combo. It was a nice try at something different, like the touch bar on the original R, but in reality i don't think it was very functional. Finally, the kit I returned was the one with the 18-150 lens and that thing was tiny in comparison to the rest of the camera. Just an awkward set up.
The R10, on the other hand, fits my medium sized hands very well and it has a traditionally mounted joystick which to me was much easier to use. Except for the lack of weather sealing, the R10 feels more like a true successor to my 7D than the R7. My full frame cameras are the RP and R8 which are similarly sized, so the transition to the R10 would be more natural. Finally, I have three LP-17 batteries already, so they can be used in the R10.
Now that the body only price of the R10 has dropped to $1000 USD, I don't see a better APS-C value at that price point.

  • @Bear10001

Hi Anthony, I have a question that just popped up in my head. I know that if you put a full frame lens on an APS-C sensor that the image will be 'cropped'. So a 50mm full frame lens on a APS-C body becomes a 80mm lens.
But, what happens when you put a APS-C lens on a APS-C body, because the image circle will be the 'size' of the APS-C sensor so is there still a crop?
Excuse my English I'm not a native English talker.

I am still learning all the terminologies and what SS/AP/ISO to use in different settings being , for instance, landscape or street photography or portrait photos, etc. I am currently using an old Canon 550 D with my new Sigma lens 24-70mm f2.8 and I love it. However, I am thinking of upgrading and ideally would like to better features like wifi and sensors as well a better feel of the camera. Can you recommend any for me that are Canon. Initially, I would like to do some videography in the late future when I am more comfortable with photography. Please and thank you. Essentially, my budget would be within the $700 (£650) range as I live in the UK.

Will be interested to hear your take on the S5IIX. The S5II has been my primary camera, but I also recently found a bargain on a used R5 and 100-500 lens for wildlife photography since Lumix and L-Mount still have nothing equivalent available. I find that JPEGs on the R5 are SO much better than those from the S5II (using custom Picture Styles via the Canon Picture Style Editor software vs. Lumix's Real Time LUTs). The Lumix RAW files are amazing for editing, but a lot of times for personal photography I don't want to spend all that time in post. But I digress...
The lens selection for RF mount is... Oof. Like how is there STILL no mid-range 50mm weather-sealed prime??? It's mind-boggling that you can only get a $200 50mm F1.8 that's not worth a single penny more (no IS, no weather sealing, external focusing, no lens hood, unreliable autofocus, scritchy scratchy feel, etc.), or you have to spend literally over 10 times that much money to get a giant F1.2. The used ones aren't much cheaper either and I simply refuse. I think at least having the Sigma 85mm F1.4 and 50mm F1.2 Art lenses available for RF mount would be enough for me to switch over to Canon fully, even if there are others on my wishlist.

The rumor I heard is that Canon is opening up for 3rd party lenses that don't directly compete with their own lenses. So a 24-70 f/2.8 is probably not on the table. But Canon's reluctance to invest in the R&D for those higher quality RF-s lenses checks out to let Sigma and Tamron fill that gap. Maybe we'll see Canon allow Sigma to fill the mid-range f/1.4 prime niche that is currently missing that used to be there for the EF mount. The 35mm and 50mm f/1.4 art would be a nice addition.

With no other lenses I'm willing to buy in my budget the 24-70mm takes care of most my shooting needs. Iv been wanting a fast wider angle lens so that 11 20mm 2.8 is a God send for me. I'll be able to get a fast wide angle lense finally without having to sacrifice quailty canons budget 10 to 20mm I think it is is like 400hundref but it feels really cheap and it's variable aperture. These fast wide angle apsc lenses are amazing for me. I'm not planning on going up to full frame anytime soon the r7 is extremely capable it takes hits in autofocus with it jumping focus alot. But for the price and what you get I think it's the best bang for your buck. And lowlights capabilities are decent good enough. And for me to Juno to a camera that has the same amount of features for the price I'd need to go r5 or r6m2 and thats just to much money for me to drop right now especially since I shoot photography for fun not for money witch a large amount of ppl do

only APS-C lenses are allowed. Canon lets third-party manufacturers do the work that they themselves don't want to do

To be honest, Canon should make their lenses available on OTHER brands systems. The best things Canon has are their lenses, they have some unique ones no one else offers. They make the best glass you can get.
So it makes sense why third party lenses comes to crop format Canon cameras first, because entry level Canon is just that and it makes it affordable for people getting into their cameras. But their best gear makes the most sense with Canon’s own lenses.
The except would be some of the well-built high-end Sigma and Tamron zoom lenses would be great on full frame Canon cameras, if you didn’t want to splurge for the Canon lenses.

Starting with APS-C lenses is also a good approach because you catch the people who are just starting out and if they decide to go full frame in the future, they will look back at the experience that they had with those lenses, and if it was a good experience, they would keep with the brand

Nice video! I found your analysis really interesting. Hope is a good thing but such expensive investments should never be based on hope of what might happen in the future. Canon does not mind screwing customers over while being top seller. It is simple math: 🤑
APS-C income without 3rd party lenses < with 3rd party lenses (To buy canon APS-C cameras, people need lenses and not the garbage canon sells for APS-C)
FF income without 3rd party lenses > with 3rd party lenses (This will change while loosing customers to seemingly more honest brands. Then they will reconsider...)
