    It is interesting how accessible this whisky is. No edges in it's flavor, and very sweet. I honestly believe that JW Blue drinkers would be best off buying one bottle and then refilling with this when it is done, and maybe adding a dash of Talisker.
    Maybe not much flavour overall, but I find this to be a great whisky if you like candy floss!

    Bless you Ralfy - you are so very generous with your advice, knowledge and recommendations. I have genuinely learned so much since I happened upon your vlog site; consider me fully engaged and on board for this incredibly enjoyable malt journey. No guff, no bull, no 'pretty' or disingenuous commercial presentations here malt mates.....oh no, Ralfy gives it straight and true. A real Malt Maestro! Thank you; Mille Grazie Ralfy.

    Thanks - I'll go re-watch the 17 year old now. What's funny is that I started my Scotch education with single malts and now I'm curious about great blends. I find myself blending my own single malts these days, creating many different styles with 6 or 7 bottles on hand at any time. Yesterday, I even put a few drops of sherry in a Glenfarclas 105. That was a good experiment.

    I love Ballantines 12 year . It gives me a similar flavor to Bruichladdich 10 for more than half the price in Georgia US. It has a fresh flavor like The Laddie. I do splurge on occasion for the Laddie bit this one gives me close to the same experience for a lot less. The Standard Ballantines in my neck of the woods is $20. The 12 is $25. There is no comparison with these two for that difference. This is a blend that I highly recommend.

    • @Tc4ify
      @Tc4ify Před 3 lety

      The difference is a bit bigger here in Europe (you can get the standard one just above 10€ and the 12 just under 20), but it's still worth it as it's much better.

    @TheGonzeaux Barbancourt has a very distinctive, buttery note. Much like light brown sugar and butter. Rum often varies from bottle to bottle. Another thing worth noting: every bottle of Barbancourt you buy goes towards helping Haiti recover from the earthquake that devastated the area a few years ago. I'm tasting Chairman's Reserve St.Lucia rum right now. Not bad either.

  • @Polyfusia
    @Polyfusia Před 12 lety

    @Maltmeister1 Single malts are generally only higher in alcohol content when it's a craft presentation of the malt. Blends are by their nature, large volume production whiskies. They're meant to sell, and are usually blended at 40% alcohol. The same goes for the aged bottlings of the same blend, with a few exceptions.

    I love my Islay single malts, but at less than half the price of Laphroiag 10 this Ballantines is a fantastic, smoky, way better-than-half-way house for those of us on a budget and easily my favourite blended malt .

    @Polyfusia I was actually wondering about the Haiti recovery thing and Barbancourt. I don't know how much of their proceeds actually help those people living there. Haiti is a pretty messed up place in a lot of ways... I guess I should learn more about the distillery. Clearly, quality varies between bottlings, but I was really surprised how far downhill this bottle is compared to the last time I tried it. I absolutely loved it the first time.

    Great review there Ralfy....Question......Why is it that with blends ,they seem to be at a lower alcohol % then the single malts in general.?You mentioned the finish lacks in blends,,maybe a higher abv would allow the flavours to linger somewhat longer.Cheers to the aqua vitae.

    Back in '14 when my grandmother passed, we inherited her assortment of liquors and spirits.. There was a half gallon jug of Ballantine's that I 'borrowed' and drank at a lake party where we were going from camp to camp by boat. After drinking what was left in the bottle (2/3), I was running away from people and gettin angry at my bud for no reason. Almost broke my neck that night too, falling off a porch. I now know whisky is not meant to be drunk that way.. But hey, I had my fun, and it isn't the worst whisky in the world.

    @MrTurtle3006 You might also think about buying a bottle of Glenmorangie 10 year old. Highland Park is lovely, and balances sweetness and peat, but Glenmorangie has a serious complexity for a 10 year old.

  • @Polyfusia
    @Polyfusia Před 12 lety

    @shuboy05 El Dorado is currently my favourite rum line also. It drinks like an expensive malt. The 12 year old, if you get a good bottle (they do vary slightly), is probably the best thing you can buy for the money here in Canada where single malts are usually over $50 and often much more. Plantation also makes some good rum, though I'm not fond of the Barbados flavour profile. Rum and whisky are definitely my favourite two sipping drinks.

    Have you tried any of the Barbancourt rum range from Haiti? I've just started tasting a bottle of the 3 star and it comes with my recommendation. The 5 star is supposed to be better still, but it isn't available here, much like Ballantine's 12 year old.
    I also have a bottle of the elusive Gosling's Family Reserve rum waiting for me, for around the Valentines Day mark. I couldn't bring myself to open it on a non-holiday.

    Hi Ralfy, I'm very new to the whiskey world and was wondering if you could suggest a good whiskey to start off with. I used to do shots of Jack Daniels and other cheaper whiskies when younger to get hammered, but am looking to develop a taste for the finer whiskies as I get older. A friend of mine doesn't know too much about them, but has suggested I start with a single malt instead of anything blended. Your opinion would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Ralfy, did you see this chill filtration experiment by Matthew Fergusson-Stewart, one of the malt maniacs? He found that experts couldn't correctly identify chill-filtered whisky and actually preferred chill-filtered whisky. Very interesting and I wonder if you might have comments about it. I agree with your preference of a craft presentation, so I wonder about the status of chill filtration.

    @Polyfusia I bought a bottle of the 5-star recently, as I've had it before and loved it. I'm very disappointed with this one. It's got a nasty sulfur nose and taste to it. It's okay mixed with Coca-Cola, but it's not the sipper it used to be, unfortunately. If you can find it, try a bottle of the Cruzan Single Barrel. Very nice stuff.

    too bad about no peat in this one but i hear they have it at 43% as well but if it has the dark fig like fruit cake short bread malty buiscuit lingering grainy taste as the original only with older matured grain and malt alcohol then thats good,for me ballantines is close in taste to grants but a bit sweeter and more robust in flavor

    Are you willing to do a review of Ballantine's Finest? As a budget blend, I enjoy it. It's light, sweet and not too complex, but I do enjoy it. But I would love to hear your take on this cheapy blend. Thanks. Or perhaps you already have done a review on it and I've missed it. If so, please let me know where I can find it.

      Agreed, though many would not agree.

      +Dale that's a shame. I understand it is not complex, but it is smooth, and delicious. Yes it doesn't linger, but at the price (I can get 1.75 liter for $27 US) nothing comes close. As something fresh I can drink neat or with a splash of water. Especially in the summertime when I like a lighter, softer whiskey on a warm day. It is smooth...sweet...and tastes vanilla, honey and some fresh apple. What more can be had at that price. It's for that easily accessible speyside thing going...and frankly I think go a budget blend it works just fine. It's my "house" whiskey. JW red it more expensive, and its absolute rubbish for my palate. As are a number of other blends at a higher price. I think it's the 2nd most popular whiskey in the world, so they must be doing something right to be that popular with such a broad section of whiskey drinks of all types and tastes. Now I do agree this is a cheapy...but I'm merely saying for its price, I don't understand the hate from some of the "snobs".

      +Judah Smith all very well said. The important thing is do YOU like something. I just bought a bottle of this and liked it as you do. To me, whisky is like buying motorcycles - they all do different things in their own way, and I would like to collect them in large numbers!

    The 12 yo Ballantines is harder to come by than the 10 yo Single Malts of Talisker, Laphroaig or Glenmorangie in GGGermany.
