Howdy, Brother! I truly appreciate your time and effort reviewing this affordable gem. If you're ever riding through Texas, I'll treat you to an opulent combo: Fried Catfish, hushpuppies and Ballantine's!
Honestly: I was surprised how good it was given the price and popularity.
Yeah, it's really good for the price and MUCH better than the standard Ballantines for not much more money (you can get it for under 20€ here in central Europe).
I got my scotch at the bar without ice. I told them no ice just to make you proud Ralfy.
I'm proud of you !
+CobraGTXNoS On the rocks is a bloody shame, good job lad!
try coke
@@raulhero3267 no ice?
It is interesting how accessible this whisky is. No edges in it's flavor, and very sweet. I honestly believe that JW Blue drinkers would be best off buying one bottle and then refilling with this when it is done, and maybe adding a dash of Talisker.
Maybe not much flavour overall, but I find this to be a great whisky if you like candy floss!
I agree, this reminded me very much of JW Platinum.
Bless you Ralfy - you are so very generous with your advice, knowledge and recommendations. I have genuinely learned so much since I happened upon your vlog site; consider me fully engaged and on board for this incredibly enjoyable malt journey. No guff, no bull, no 'pretty' or disingenuous commercial presentations here malt mates.....oh no, Ralfy gives it straight and true. A real Malt Maestro! Thank you; Mille Grazie Ralfy.
Thanks - I'll go re-watch the 17 year old now. What's funny is that I started my Scotch education with single malts and now I'm curious about great blends. I find myself blending my own single malts these days, creating many different styles with 6 or 7 bottles on hand at any time. Yesterday, I even put a few drops of sherry in a Glenfarclas 105. That was a good experiment.
me and me mum are just having a lockdown one.
I love Ballantines 12 year . It gives me a similar flavor to Bruichladdich 10 for more than half the price in Georgia US. It has a fresh flavor like The Laddie. I do splurge on occasion for the Laddie bit this one gives me close to the same experience for a lot less. The Standard Ballantines in my neck of the woods is $20. The 12 is $25. There is no comparison with these two for that difference. This is a blend that I highly recommend.
The difference is a bit bigger here in Europe (you can get the standard one just above 10€ and the 12 just under 20), but it's still worth it as it's much better.
I just bought a bottle in upstate NY today for $26
When in Central-America, I did like the whiskies, but the heat makes them a bit sharp, I always ask for a single cube when in a hot place.
i care about the taste Ralphy and I'm looking forward for a bottle of the 12yrs old in Christmas, thanks Ralphy...cheers.
I like the regular Ballentine's blend. Looking forward to try the 12.
Thanks Ralfy! As a novice whisky drinker I found this very interesting & useful.
Great stuff Ralfy, learnt alot from your vlogs. Have yoe tried the 17yr old, noticed it has been awarded Third Finest Whisky in the World: Ballantine’s 17 year old in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible Awards 2013.
Boy this brings back memories! My first scotch bottle purchase, and around the time of the video I believe. Still a classic!
@Polyfusia
Since rum and Scotch whisky are often aged in ex-bourbon barrels, I find rum very accessible for whisky drinkers. The El Dorado line from Guyana is presently my go-to rum.
I follow your recommendation Ralfy!
Ballantines 12yo is realy good, it remember me the R.I.P Jonnie Walker Green!!! Thanks a lot! :)
Do you have a video of your favorites, like top ten or five?
@TheGonzeaux Barbancourt has a very distinctive, buttery note. Much like light brown sugar and butter. Rum often varies from bottle to bottle. Another thing worth noting: every bottle of Barbancourt you buy goes towards helping Haiti recover from the earthquake that devastated the area a few years ago. I'm tasting Chairman's Reserve St.Lucia rum right now. Not bad either.
@Maltmeister1 Single malts are generally only higher in alcohol content when it's a craft presentation of the malt. Blends are by their nature, large volume production whiskies. They're meant to sell, and are usually blended at 40% alcohol. The same goes for the aged bottlings of the same blend, with a few exceptions.
Really enjoy your reviews and use of nice adjectives!
I love my Islay single malts, but at less than half the price of Laphroiag 10 this Ballantines is a fantastic, smoky, way better-than-half-way house for those of us on a budget and easily my favourite blended malt .
Is it really like an Islay, I thought Islays are smoky? I’m an American bourbon drinker so I’m not familiar with a lot of scotches.
If the standard bottling is one you've not had in a wee while I'd say give it another go, recent bottling was a pleasant surprise for me!
Ralfy, I've been noticing Ballantine's 12 year old blended malt in round bottle in some german online shops, do you have any experience with that? Maybe an older bottling?
Thanks for the gentle review.
From South Korea
This may be a dumb question, but few days ago, my dad dumped a bottle of Ballantines down the drain, he said that he opened the bottle 20 years ago, was this the right thing to do?
only if it tasted rotten and was undrinkable !
***** Ok, thank you. :)
Hey ralfy I know this is a little out of the box but as more people turn to vaping over smoking tradition cigars and cigarettes. What about giving flavour matches to single malts? Just an idea. Love it Ralfy!
whisky vapour ! sound interesting !
hey ralfy i have two malts to mention. i knw your goin to be doing vodka's later this year this is my area i have two vodkas that are great an they are not too expenisve IMPERIA RUSSIAN VODKA this vodka cost $33 dollars in the us but i think that it is worth the price its sweet smooth with a little burn at the finish. the second vodka is Rokk vodka this vodka blew my mind on the price $14 in the us this is now my fav vodka it smooth mild with a lilttle bit of sweetness at the finish
@Polyfusia I was actually wondering about the Haiti recovery thing and Barbancourt. I don't know how much of their proceeds actually help those people living there. Haiti is a pretty messed up place in a lot of ways... I guess I should learn more about the distillery. Clearly, quality varies between bottlings, but I was really surprised how far downhill this bottle is compared to the last time I tried it. I absolutely loved it the first time.
Great review there Ralfy....Question......Why is it that with blends ,they seem to be at a lower alcohol % then the single malts in general.?You mentioned the finish lacks in blends,,maybe a higher abv would allow the flavours to linger somewhat longer.Cheers to the aqua vitae.
outstanding😊😊
Excellent and very classy and professional review.
Back in '14 when my grandmother passed, we inherited her assortment of liquors and spirits.. There was a half gallon jug of Ballantine's that I 'borrowed' and drank at a lake party where we were going from camp to camp by boat. After drinking what was left in the bottle (2/3), I was running away from people and gettin angry at my bud for no reason. Almost broke my neck that night too, falling off a porch. I now know whisky is not meant to be drunk that way.. But hey, I had my fun, and it isn't the worst whisky in the world.
Ralfy, what about Buchanan's 18 yo. This is a good up scale blend, and available in USA, also brand big in Latin America I hear.
Had this one a year or so ago, thought it was enjoyable enough, but nothing to write home about. But it was decently priced, so it was balanced in that regard.
@MrTurtle3006 You might also think about buying a bottle of Glenmorangie 10 year old. Highland Park is lovely, and balances sweetness and peat, but Glenmorangie has a serious complexity for a 10 year old.
@shuboy05 El Dorado is currently my favourite rum line also. It drinks like an expensive malt. The 12 year old, if you get a good bottle (they do vary slightly), is probably the best thing you can buy for the money here in Canada where single malts are usually over $50 and often much more. Plantation also makes some good rum, though I'm not fond of the Barbados flavour profile. Rum and whisky are definitely my favourite two sipping drinks.
hi Ralfy. i live in the tropical brazilian sea shores.... shuld i drink my ballantines with ice?? or maybe put the bottle in a fridge?
Rally, first off let me tell you how much I love your videos. I thought I knew a little about Scotch but now I knew very very little...Other than the big names that everyone has on the shelves. Thanks to you a whole new world has been opened to me. I never knew Scotch could taste like Laphroaig or Ardbeg. I have a list of others I want to try. Okay now my question...What do you mean when you talk about a branded Scotch? It that just a brand name that everyone would know? I live in Nashville Ten
Have you tried any of the Barbancourt rum range from Haiti? I've just started tasting a bottle of the 3 star and it comes with my recommendation. The 5 star is supposed to be better still, but it isn't available here, much like Ballantine's 12 year old.
I also have a bottle of the elusive Gosling's Family Reserve rum waiting for me, for around the Valentines Day mark. I couldn't bring myself to open it on a non-holiday.
Hi Ralfy, I'm very new to the whiskey world and was wondering if you could suggest a good whiskey to start off with. I used to do shots of Jack Daniels and other cheaper whiskies when younger to get hammered, but am looking to develop a taste for the finer whiskies as I get older. A friend of mine doesn't know too much about them, but has suggested I start with a single malt instead of anything blended. Your opinion would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry Ralfy. Should have checked first! I see you did indeed review the 17yo back in review 173
Hi Ralfy, did you see this chill filtration experiment by Matthew Fergusson-Stewart, one of the malt maniacs? He found that experts couldn't correctly identify chill-filtered whisky and actually preferred chill-filtered whisky. Very interesting and I wonder if you might have comments about it. I agree with your preference of a craft presentation, so I wonder about the status of chill filtration.
I do not agree with your comment about Highland Park 18 yo. I had a small 5 cl sample, and it was truly an unique experience. The most amazing honny and flower notes.
Though I have not tried the older bottlings, so have nothing to compare to, other than other good whiskies of course.
Why is this light in color ? They say dark is better? Also blue label is light
Great review as always. Do I see frost smoke coming out of your mouth? Is it freezing in there? Are you planning on reviewing the Glen Grant 10yo?
Hi Ralfy!
can we expect a review of the bankrowburn which you blended a couple off months ago any time soon? :) I´m quite excited for that one!
Dear Ralfy, great review again, interesting blend, is there any possibility in a future that you'll be reviewing Ballantine's 30year old? The price is steep, but does it justfy the price in a way that Chivas Regal 25year old does or is it unfortunate as the Johnnie Walker Blue Label is? Thank you and best regards.
Hi Ralfy, the Ballentine 12yo is fairly hard to find in this area, in lieu of the 12er, the Std Ballantine is always readily available here(albeit on the bottom shelf, but then Grants is down there too,so go figure)
Q... Before purchasing this unknown, what is your rating for the Stdndard Ballentines Blend?
Thanks mate.
The first single malt that I've purchased was The Glenlivet 12yo. Should I try Highland Park 12yo next?
@Polyfusia I bought a bottle of the 5-star recently, as I've had it before and loved it. I'm very disappointed with this one. It's got a nasty sulfur nose and taste to it. It's okay mixed with Coca-Cola, but it's not the sipper it used to be, unfortunately. If you can find it, try a bottle of the Cruzan Single Barrel. Very nice stuff.
@Polyfusia
I'm presently drinking the 15 year old which actually reminds me of a well-aged bourbon. I was extremely shocked to see a bottle selling for $33 in California. A 15 year old single malt would be over $40.
Hello, Ralfy. My friend became a malt snob. That should I say to him to make him back to the blend reality without any obsessing by a tasting notes?
Ralfy, can you do a video of "recommended collectible malts"? In other words, some whiskies that are superb right now and that are worth stocking up on either for a future enjoyment or as an investment. A format of five or six would be nice like your other "recommended" videos. For example: Are Ugedail, A'bunadh, HP 18, Bruichladdich, etc worth stocking up on? Thanks!
Ralfy ! Have you tried the 17yo Ballantines? How does that rate (A ralfy blend mark?).
I love Scottish accent
do you drink anything other than whisky? 2011 was a breakout year for myself in craft beer, and now I'm trying whiskeys and cognacs. Im 26, certainly you've have had other spirits of recommendation.
@ralfystuff
Alas, in N.America the annoying ads are still active, don't mind the pop-ups though.
Hi Ralfy,
Got a pressie of a bottle of thsi from a friend recently and was VERY pleasantly surprised, but your remarks about its availability in the "G" countries is not completely accurate. It is not available here in Great Britain. My contacts at Chivas have said "just to confirm Ballantine’s 12 YO is not available for sale in the UK outside duty free". Regrettable!
@ralfy does the new bottling of this still deserve an 85 mark?
Greetings, Ralfy, heve you seen a Christmass ballantines version, and that do you think about it?
Hi , Ralfy! what whiskey you recommend? Ballantines 12y, Grants 12 or glenfiddich 12?
what about glenmorangie for beginners as a single malt? i often recommend it to friends, and always works out for them.
It's a light, sweet whisky.
Ideal for a session, if that's what you desire
Great, affordable segue into Scotch!
Hello ralfy, I tried this one but isn't very good. I've thinking about bying glengoyne 17,
glendronach 15 revival, glenfarclas 17 or highland park 18, could you recommend me one?
Thank you very much, i hope you reach 1000 reviews or more.
Ralfy, can Glenfiddich 12 be switched with Glenlivet 12 as a starting single malt?
Review for Ballantine's pure malt 12yo?or compared with Ballantines 12yo
i do love laphroaig 10 over arbeg or any other scotch, but Ballantines 12 is my everyday, anyday scotch for a half of the price.
It looks like it's bloody damn cold there! Be careful! We need you :)
BTW, bought Grant's Ale Cask blend and it was very interesting. A definite young cask and much nicer, than average cheap blend.
Hey Ralfy, i was kinda hoping you could do a tiny comparison with the 12 yr old pure malt.
Ralfy, what do you think about the cheapest from Ballantines' range Ballantine's Finest blended Scotch Whisky? Thank you for your reviews! Have a nice day.
bit basic Marcel, better with the 12yo version.
and you gave B&W 86? wow intresting
yay Ralfy TV!!!! my favorite show!!
Can you tall my is it difference between this and Ballantines 12 pure malt?
. . . primarily flavour and length of finish.
Ballantines 12 pure malt is a blend of only single malts, no grain whisky in the blend. The Pure Malt is significantly more flavorful, thicker, better mouthfeel and has none of the grainy/corny flavor of the blended scotch.
this was reportedly Bunny Berrigans favorite whiskey
ok. if Ballantines 12 vs Grants 12 ? whats better?
How much
Thx sir.
Ralfy- do I see condensation when you breathe? How cold is it in that Bothy?!
too bad about no peat in this one but i hear they have it at 43% as well but if it has the dark fig like fruit cake short bread malty buiscuit lingering grainy taste as the original only with older matured grain and malt alcohol then thats good, for me ballantines is close in taste to grants but a bit sweeter and more robust in flavor
love your reviews man!
Better than monkey shoulder imo
Nice reviews. Subbed.
Are you willing to do a review of Ballantine's Finest? As a budget blend, I enjoy it. It's light, sweet and not too complex, but I do enjoy it. But I would love to hear your take on this cheapy blend. Thanks. Or perhaps you already have done a review on it and I've missed it. If so, please let me know where I can find it.
Agreed, though many would not agree.
+Dale that's a shame. I understand it is not complex, but it is smooth, and delicious. Yes it doesn't linger, but at the price (I can get 1.75 liter for $27 US) nothing comes close. As something fresh I can drink neat or with a splash of water. Especially in the summertime when I like a lighter, softer whiskey on a warm day. It is smooth...sweet...and tastes vanilla, honey and some fresh apple. What more can be had at that price. It's for that easily accessible speyside thing going...and frankly I think go a budget blend it works just fine. It's my "house" whiskey. JW red it more expensive, and its absolute rubbish for my palate. As are a number of other blends at a higher price. I think it's the 2nd most popular whiskey in the world, so they must be doing something right to be that popular with such a broad section of whiskey drinks of all types and tastes. Now I do agree this is a cheapy...but I'm merely saying for its price, I don't understand the hate from some of the "snobs".
+Judah Smith all very well said. The important thing is do YOU like something. I just bought a bottle of this and liked it as you do. To me, whisky is like buying motorcycles - they all do different things in their own way, and I would like to collect them in large numbers!
Bingo!
@ rafly kindly consider this review
The 12 yo Ballantines is harder to come by than the 10 yo Single Malts of Talisker, Laphroaig or Glenmorangie in GGGermany.
this goes well with plums in chocolate
Just found your channel. Great stuff! Looking forward to being able to describe the taste more.
Magkano
How about Malty Munchers?
looks cold!
what time is it over there Ralphy? and are you going to the TT this year?
