Gilles Villeneuve Drives Unsighted | 1981 Canadian Grand Prix

- Gilles Villeneuve was never a man to do things by half measures, something he demonstrated perfectly at his home race in 1981 when his Ferrari's front wing obscured his vision. Undeterred, the Canadian continued until the appendage simply fell off...

He said after that race: "Even if they black-flagged me, I wouldn't be able to see it."
Totally forgot that but now I remember. Yes he did said that. With a "wink".
Dude's got a circuit named after him for a reason.
just a djentleman
Eric Valverde do you djent, friend?
Dude's got that cicuit named after him for a reason*
Trust man 😂
Eric Valverde MESHUGGAH
Only 6 wins, no championships, never watched him live, yet he is one of my favourite drivers...
37 years later and people still interested and talking about him... one of the greats !
Make it 42
Loses front wing. Power slides out of corner, then ignores pit entrance to continue race. Proper driver...
Was more than just that dude. The wing falling off forced his tires to slide the opposite way. He inertia drifted into the corner due to the front end sliding off like that.
Icyxos Weight shifts as well because you go from having some front downforce to nearly 0 front downforce at probably still close to 100 mph in what amounts to a big go-kart. Great driving not to lose it because he had to steer into the slide to avoid wrecking in the wet.
And finished 3rd without the front spoiler...that was talent at its best.
@@olivergarcia3635 It's a wing, not a spoiler.
@@Catcrumbs Dude, don't spoil it... Guide him under your wing.

''We all knew he had talent beyond our reach."

Gilles, one of the greats that never got to really show the world what he could do in a great F1 car, that would have been amazing to see I bet.
He could have won in 82 if not for his recklessness and the outdated, still light-metal based Ferrari Chassis.
He drove competitive cars in recent years...1978, 1979 he lost against his teamade Jody Scheckter who won the Championship.. and in 1982! Quite possible that he have won the 82 Championship. We never know...
@@markuseggstein8349 There was a internal agreement inside Ferrari following Villeneuve's greater misfortune in the first half of the season that '79 was to be Scheckter's year and Villeneuve supported that. In addition, whilstin '78-'79 the T3 and T4 were competitive cars they were respectively totally outclassed by the Lotus 79 and Williams FW07. Furthermore, '78 was Villeneuve's first full season .. he SHOULD still have won in Long Beach but did win in Montreal. Conversely, he was BY FAR the standout driver in '79 and barring an accident caused by Scheckter and/or 1L of fuel in Belgium would have been world champion anyway.
@@AtariOwl also if I remember correctly, he could have easily overtaken Sheckter in Monza I think but didn't as he was following team orders or so I was told
What a great driver...pure talent..
#SalutGilles
And there he goes... The Enzo Ferrari favourite driver...
Luke Gyllies that’s why the old fuck never went to Gilles’s funeral ..
@@483972 he never went to his funeral because grief, Enzo said that Gilles was like a son to him.
Gilles Villeneuve - he knew no fear, because racing was his life
One of the absolute greatest drivers ever known to mankind!
Oh, the trophies and titles he would have won if not for that fateful day in Zolder...
Same for Senna. 3 Championships doesn't capture how great of a driver he is. Nevertheless, both Senna and Villeneuve (it seems) are both uncompromising drivers.
To be absolutely honest. I think Villeneuve is one of the all time greats but I don't believe he would have won more after 1982, than before 1982. He wasn't really what you call a "conservative" driver. Post 1982, F1 entered a conservative era so if he kept racing so reckless...
Ayrton & Gilles forever
Amazing! *RIP Gilles Villeneuve 1950-1982*
Gilles Villeneuve is the greatest driver of my home country. This video is proof that he is so. #SalutGilles
Oui, j’étais là pour voir la course. Légende.
A blind Gilles Villeneuve still is a better driver than Lance Stroll. Duh.
Yeah but Villeneuve might have had more talent, but Stroll has more money! Oh, wait...
Even better than than the MadMAX with full-eyesight!
Still drives more safely than Max Verstappen
a blind gilles villeneuve is better than most drivers
Why so serious?
That was pure driving without halo, fear and driving assists, this guy was a legend.
The fact that he drove that good with no visibility because of His front wing is in his line of vision is mind boggling the fact he is doing this and still controlling the car is amazing the fact that its PISSING DOWN RAIN and he is making this look like a Sunday Drive is the reason its him and Senna and Nobody Else...
He is regarded by some as the greatest F1 driver all time. And he won 6 races to Schumacher’s 91.
They’re not wrong, you know.
Definitely better than Senna, for sure.
Sir Jackie on commentary! Brilliant.
I remember this race and that wing in the face. Was just a wee lad,,as the man would say. One of the most wondrous things I seen in Motorsports at that time. Dad was a private pilot. Asked him if that's what would happen if his Cessna wing fell off. lol. Poor Gilles,, even bigger things were in store for him I think if not for the devil's tragedy.
What a brilliant driver, such a shame his career ended so quickly. #RIPVilleneuve
We miss you, Gilles...
When you are Gilles Villeneuve, when you drive a Ferrari in the rain without a spoiler, when you know that Enzo Ferrari himself is watching you, everything is possible.
Was there. Legend in the making. His passing hit his countrymen hard.
Who else but the great Gilles Villeneuve could do a rally style pendulum turn with a formula 1 car?
I never saw Villeneuve racing, that was before my time. But seeing this I think I know why he is such a legend
David Moll Ever watched Villeneuve-Arnoux in Dijon 1979?
His performance at Jarama in '81 was brilliant, too. He held off five cars that were all superior in the corners. It was tight racing.
Legend
40 ans déja dans quelques jours !
SALUT GILLES !
The Legend of Villeneuve!
What if the Halo..........
No forget about it..
Did he pit? Did he ger black flagged? Did he win? Did he swap cars? So many lose ends
jamdc2000 Got third and finished the race with the missing front wing.
thx mate
jamdc2000 You're welcome.
Andrea Moroni was it in late laps then
Am Nah maybe pure talents, those days the gaps could become huge easily, I have no idea if that's earlier or later in the race.
Better than halo
Antonio Padrón stop crying
i cant
Then cry alone
why? :c

Gilles number 1
One of the best!
Best driver ever
Sonic 08 yeah after Senna
No, Gilles the best ever.Senna in my heart, but Gilles ....Gilles petit prince, best driver ever.
What a man
Back when TV coverage was free and F1 pure driving
Senna raced in the 80s and I’m quoting, When I was driving go kart driving that was pure driving pure racing. There wasn’t any politics then, right? And no money involved just real racing. Gilles Villeneuve once said why would I be scared of Eccelstone and Balestre the fans aren’t here to see politicians and manipulators. There here to see me Alain and Mario and Carlos.
Gilles, the most aggressive driver in history
Gilles ❤ what a driver !!!
You're sharing some awesome stuff right here, Keep going with these archives !:)
M really considering gills now one of the best that was amazing car control
Takes skill to do that. Hat's off to a real pro right there☆ #Pro
0:45 jesus christ that car control.
dat car control! DUDE! Legend.
Old halo looks great!!
Mesmo não ter sido campeão, coloco ele no seleto grupo dos 5 maiores pilotos que vi pilotar: Senna, Piquet, Lauda, Prost e Villeneuve. Os melhores dos anos 70 para cá.
The power of peripheral vision, ladies and gentlemen.
When he was on the track you always had the sensation that he could make everything he wanted facing all the circumstances around him like a superhero. I couldn't believe he was actually dead, he always founded a way to escape death so far:(
Legend!!
Gilles Forever.
Man that front wing could have flew trough his head, but he just drove the car normal and finished the race without front wing. Well that is some badass moment for Gilles Villeneuve what a driver he was :)
When your windshield wiper's stuck...
O melhor de todos os tempos!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
"Now we can fight" of the days : Front wing
When you're good.... you're good.
0:43 He fucking climbed out to get the front wing out of the way.WHAT A FUCKING LEGEND
Pazzesco che ricordi l ho vista in diretta .pelle di gallina.♡♥
Great Gilles!!!
Legend. Speaking of Legends, Jackie Stewart is one, but he does my head in
He is a hero, the memory he has to remember the whole circuit is brilliant
Wow !!!!
This is amazing
Gilles had balls of steel, always on maximum attack no matter what. Unfortunately maximum attack is the thing that killed him in the end. Salut Gilles.
Il più grande di tutti i tempi
Si, ci ha deliziato con sue gare memorabili, nessuno come lui...mai.
What a legend
As much as I love Senna as a man, Gilles was and is, without a doubt, the best driver.
No fucking whey
Gr8 talent
I was there! So old!

BEAUTIFUL VERI NUMBER ONE FANTASTIC😊
I didn't know that Jackie Stewart commentated on F1?!
Mysterious Figure token commentator up to the 90s Australian GP
Yes, his commentary never appeared scheduled, I think if he was just around and he was up for it, he did it.
"no thanks, I'm still driving!" 😜
He did for ESPN/ABC during the 80’s
Kenny McCormick Yeah, made a few commentary appearances on Eurosport around late '80s too, if I remember correctly. In the good old days when that channel showed some awesome stuff. John Watson was regular commentator, I believe.
Hero
Unbelievable
He was crazy
Me when it's raining really hard on the highway and I just want to get home
One of a kind!!!
Much better than Jacques yet without the title, such a shame
Jacques was no slouch though, Indy500 win in addition to that amazing 1997 title.
Jacques was great in the nineties, then he murdered his carreer with BAR.
(Alonso has done something similar when he jumped out of the McLaren)
Thank God the Halo saved him.

Oh no! Grosjean got decapitated in the Bahrain GP!

the last f1 hero
Wow !
So he drove in the rain for 30 minutes with a front wing blinding him, drifted an F1 car on both 4 wheels and 3 wheels, won in such a dog of a car in 1981 surrounded by the ground effect-filled grid, was 11 seconds in practice faster than 2nd place man in the same weather condition. That might be as impressive as winning a Drivers Championship in a Williams
Bungle2010 I mean in a Williams now this year not the other years
The goat
He's driving using feel
Please put the full race up on F1TV archives with Jackie Stewart’s commentary!
If you look closely he actually reaches and pulls the bodywork away. Incredible driver
No he doesn't. If you have ever sat in a race car, you would know you can't lean forward once you're strapped in.
i could only dream of watching him today
Jackie Stewart, the original DC
When the DRIVER is in control and not having to worry about MGU-K etc nonsense
god, those rear light looks so epic when cornering...
We are back on this track this week !
0:42 That scandinavian flick though!!
Nowadays he get a 300 place grid penalty.
unless his name is max, then no penalty

Could you please upload the Wall of Champions' crashes in this week?
Canada hasn't had many F1 drivers, but Gilles more than makes up for it....I like Jacques, too, but he's younger than me, so Gilles was my hero.
i am a fan of Gilles ....
but when you look at how Jacques won his championship title . took the inside from Shumi , it was just wonderfull how he did it ,,, for few seconds it was like Gilles spirit was there with him ,,,, ( knowing that Shummi is WELL KNOWNED for putting others in rails to win races and champioshit.( ships sorry champioships) ...
the man was like ? not even 100 races in F-1 , no championship but , KNOWNED BY MOST F-1 FANS all around the world ...
A TRUE LEGEND !
SALUT GILLES ( 40years in 5 days that Gilles is gone )
@@jeanluke39 I 100% agree with your comment about Jacques' move on Schumacher, that was proof he was Gilles' son right there! ALSO, winning Indy after taking a 2 lap penalty meaning he drove 5 miles further than the secong place car.....
But ya, I was 11 when Gilles died 40 years ago today, I remember that day...he wasn't just the Canadian on the grid, he actually won races and drove for Ferarri, we could cheer for him and he actually had a chance!
Wow how did they drive without the halo back then? Such balls
Tom bomb What about in the first half of 1900 and 60's then? Driving while basically sitting on your fuel tank, maybe with lights off during night (like Nuvolari did in 1930 Mille Miglia, but that was tactic, he followed the first car all the time and then overtook it at the last moment leaving the leading driver, Varzi, out of words since he never noticed him).
God and to think there'll come a time when people say that seriously
Andrea Moroni Quando passa Nuvolari etc etc
Andrea Moroni we should mention that this is a song about that madman during the MilleMiglia
He finished 3rd this race
Gênio!
The 1981 halo!
