I did a year of daily stretching and this is what happened

  • When the COVID lockdown came in, I decided to use the opportunity to spend 15-20 minutes per day stretching to see if I could become more flexible. In this video, I will discuss what I did and what happened.
TL;DR I became a little more flexible, but not too much.
I tried a different programme every month or so, working my way through Alo Moves, Lucas Rockwood's Gravity Yoga, yoga teacher training, CZcams, Down Dog, Stretching Anatomy, Stretching Scientifically, Hyperbolic Stretching and GOWOD.
Flexibility has many lifestyle factors including how active you are, what exercise you do, whether you work at a desk and even how you sleep. Genetics also play a factor. So, some people are going to find it more difficult than others.
Overall, my favourite app was GOWOD because it was able to demonstrate progress. However, I also enjoyed yoga teacher training for personal development and fun.
    Chapters:
    00:00 Introduction
    01:40 Alo Moves
    03:33 Gravity Yoga
    08:34 Yoga teacher training
    12:19 Down Dog app
    13:00 Stretching Anatomy
    14:05 Stretching Scientifically
    15:50 Hyperbolic Stretching
    18:24 GOWOD app
    21:52 Conclusion

Exactly what I hoped to find when I Goggled Hyperbolic Stretching reviews. Moreover, in your self-description (perhaps in the HS video) as a person who is not (genetically) very flexible, I saw myself clearly. I seriously doubt I would achieve stretching results in any program that would be better than the results you got. But I did buy Scientific Stretching, just to see what I might accomplish. Thanks, Chris.

I ended here because I wanted to know more about HyperbolicStreching: it's still everywhere!! I tried YB last year and I agree with you: I like Lucas way to be but I didn't feel I was improving plus some of the poses where a real nightmare to hold for that long. I wanted to try the HS now but it sounded unreal. Glad I found your video! I really appreciate your honesty. Really helpful!! Thanks!!

I appreciated this video. I actually teach gravity yoga and can confidently say this stuff works wonders. I’d say a way to measure your mobility gains is also noticing if you feel less overall pain and tightness during the day. It’s all about reestablishing the range of motion and mobility we had when we were kids. Everyday movement patterns make us super stiff over time.

Been doing self-derived PNF style programme for a couple of years now and not finding a lot of results so I came to your channel having been captivated by the hyperbolic stretching ads and wanting to find out if there really was some kind of stretching that would bring the results I wished for. Great video, I saw an ad for hyperbolic stretching and it looked too good to be true. There is however a program that has the secret to stretching which has not been mainstream.
Yoga doesn't build flexibility because there's no standard and it demonstrates flexibility. Only naturally flexible people do yoga. There's no progressive plan to actually build flexibility.

  • @kyrareneeLOA

Chris, good video. I am a big believer that the stretching needs to be long holds. The only way I gained my flexibility was an hour a day. And setting a goal, to go two more inches every day. No program, just yoga. But that 2 inch goal was a game changer. I did manage to get into the full split with my diligence in a two month time. And is making my partner do it He is progressing too.

    • @fergie201
      @fergie201 Před rokem +1

Yes, I like yin yoga, you need more time then 15 minutes a day. Long holds will definitely give you the flexibility to need.

I found that doing yoga regularly for an hour a day didn't cut it at all stretching wise. Its only when I started a session of deep tissue massages that I started to see progress. It can be the fascia around the muscles rather than the muscles themselves that won't stretch and you also have nerves to contend with as well They can send signals to the brain to stop the stretch.

Maybe you'd like to try Karin Dimirovova's 'Beyond Flexibility' program. I can't say much yet. I only just started it. But I've done her 'Core Play' program. Though it's definitely out there with the claims also. 😅
(I've done the 30 day core play program 2x and still I am a fair way from achieving the advertised outcomes. However, I've had enough improvement to do a third round, this time in combination with Beyond Flexibility, to alleviate repetitiveness and include more stretching. It's not perfect. But it's not bad. It's simple enough to persue before work and does not require further info /research to perform (for me anyway).

Doing splits is not important, but range of motion and strength, I find, at age 71, are very important. And flexibility is part of that. You might not be able to gain much more flexibility, but stretching to maintain flexibility and range of motion is essential as we age. In the whole body not just legs!
