  • I've NEVER Done This Before! | Trucking Across The Ocean
Hey everyone! In this video, BKM, Dakota, and I set sail to San Juan Island, Washington via ferry to make a delivery to the island residents. Every time FedEx brings me a crazy load, I think the next one can't get any crazier! This was, by far, one of the coolest and craziest deliveries I've ever had the pleasure of making. I hope you enjoy this video as much as I did making it! See you in the next one.

I’m not a trucker, but I’ve lived in Washington State for the last 27 years. Having lived in 18 states, I love Washington the most. And the San Juan Islands? One of the most beautiful places on earth.
And then there is the what you felt... Riding one of the San Juan ferries is an awesome experience. When Marianne and I want to get away, our favorite trip is to the San Juans. Being on a ferry for even a few minutes refreshes the soul, expands the mind, and reminds you that “life is good”. The excitement that you showed is what most of us feel when we ride those ferries!
    Welcome aboard!
    Dan.

Still have the boat and hope to do it again sometime. Those ferries mean business and don't stop for anyone, so we had to be on out toes to keep clear of them. I take it you landed at Friday Harbor, a cool little town! Hopefully your next trip you will have more daylight to enjoy the great views!

I can relate. For 5 years I peddled freight to Vancouver Island for a hardware chain. I'd start in Sydney, just east of Victoria, then up the island to Port Hardy, back to Comox, over to the mainland and down the Sunshine Coast. It was 2 days and 5 ferry rides, ranging in size from the biggest in the fleet to a small one that only fit 3 trucks. I LOVED that run, and would still be there, if only the company had survived. Happy Trucking.

My brother is a truck driver, driving everything from asphalt trucks to buses, and especially when he was driving the milk truck he'd go out to the islands near where we lived, so he'd take the ferry in the morning, do his business, and return in the afternoon. For us "out there" it was quite routine, though I do understand how it's special for you.
One thing that was particularly annoying was if he was held up at the island for whatever reason and missed the ferry, as after the afternoon one the next one was the next morning. There are stores there and he had friends on them he could visit so it wasn't too bad, mostly annoying. He also had a stash of things in his truck for this very reason, even though he came home almost every day :-)

In the summer months my wife is the mail/freight person on the US Mailboat on Lake Winnepesaukee in New Hampshire - when FedEx, UPS, DHS, USPS need to get packages and mail to island residents she does the "last mile" of the journey you are describing. @Chris_Lohmann Před 3 lety

@xheralt I'm well aware of how crucial air pressure is. I pull doubles for FedEx Ground as well and drive the same make and model truck that Shelby drives (Freightliner Cascadia) although mine is a 2018. A common problem with the new Freightliners is FALSE low air pressure warnings. You'll be driving along and the alarm will go off and you'll look down and the air pressure gauge is normal (110-120 psi). At least three of our trucks do that. We've taken them to Freightliner and they've been unable to determine what causes the problem or how to fix it. It's been really annoying.

    • @Chris_Lohmann
      @Chris_Lohmann Před 3 lety

My best memory+ OTR trucking was on a run from St. Louis to California. A huge thunderstorm over the Texas panhandle on I40 west toward Tucumcari, NM. No visibility and about 45mph across Texas west from Amarillo. But somewhere near the west end of the wind farms (which is kinda cool to see the whole landscape blinking in unison) the storm broke and the full Moon rose slowly directly over Tucumcari. It was one of the toughest and most beautiful runs I ever took.
Now I drive a municipal bus for Tahoe Transportation District and get to see gorgeous sunrises, snow capped mountains, serene vistas and green pastures every day. I couldn't ask for better!

I have been seriously considering trucking lately. Your videos, from among a great many trucker youtubers, are extremely informative and entertaining - actually helpful info and not negative, angry ranting. Watching your videos has enabled me to envision trucking realistically, as in, "if this person can do it so can I." And that's nothing to do with gender, but rather because of your demeanor and attitude while working such a serious and potentially dangerous job.

This is the BEST, you brought tears to my eyes today. While you were on the ferry if you looked north you would have seen my home, called Lummi Island. I just tested my CDL tests and received my permit. Looking forward to the days ahead and watching more of your video’s (I started with your one and I’m working my way through them all).

Hello from New Zealand! Where the only way to get a vehicle between our two islands (North and South) is by ferry, there are two ferry companies running 2-3 ships each (Interislander and Bluebridge) and they run constantly back and forth 24/7. It’s fun! Truck drivers get discounts on food and drinks and there’s a separate lounge and coffee machine for them, some just sleep in their cabs because the journey takes about 3.5 hours.
    Great video!

Sometimes after a long week on the road I get kind of sick of trucking. Then I get a sweet run and get to explore a new place and remember why I got into this field. Keep on exploring!

I grew up on Whidbey Island and if you ever get time, you and Dakota should drive up and see all the Islands in the Puget Sound. Most of the ferries have walk-on passengers so you guessed correctly. Traveling on the Puget Sound ferries at dawn and dusk are the best times because its so beautiful but its also the busiest time to travel on those ferries. Thanks for all the great content.

We used to go on Staten Island ferry with car sometimes with the car or without the car. After 9-11-2001, no more cars allowed. It was a nice ride. Enjoy your ferry with the truck. It must be fun with the truck, and your dog, and friend.

I'm in Santa Barbara, Ca... The Company I worked for we had a contract from the Navy to haul their demolition from Santa Cruz Island off the Coast 26 miles from Main Land. We rode in a Barge made for one truck only. Over an hour trip both ways. Then Drove on the Island to Pick up a 40' Roll off container. That was cool also!

When I truck around the sound or the Olympic Peninsula I love listening to the Canadian Radio Stations which come in strong off the waters from Victoria & Vancouver just because its a neat thing you don't normally get to hear.

1:13 Doge says, "Worst drive through window ever."
When you're used to being in the biggest vehicle around, then you get on one, that even if it held 50 trucks, would be small. Sweet trip.
Imagine that going to Newfoundland, fifteen hour boat ride, three times a week. Timing is everything.

Your videos are always fantastic, but this is one of the best ever. Your excitement is so cute, it's obvious you loved every second of this trip. I've been on a ferry once or twice in my life when I was on vacation. The sights are indeed beautiful, we're fortunate there was enough daylight when you came back to the mainland. I really enjoyed this video, your enthusiasm is great. Keep up the awesome job, your channel is simply amazing. You're the best Shelby! :)

Hi, my name is TJ and I am a subscriber any enjoy your videos. This video brought me back to when I was a kid. I live and love living in ColoRADo. However I grew up and lived in Washington state and on Vashon Island across from Seattle via ferry boat. There are so many Ferry Boat runs all across Puget Sound. You love the rain and Washington has Puget Sound with the Cascade mtns on one side and the Olympic mtns on the other side and eastern Washington which is just like ColoRADo. Thanks for bringing me back to the excitement of a first time Ferry Boat ride. You walking around the boat at night, had me teleporting back to walking up that steep stairway from the cars. I have so many Ferry Boat Stories. Thanks Shelby. Keep on trucking. I will be a Patreon soon.

About 35 years ago, I went up to Port Angeles, Wa. and one of the bridges across some body of water over there had a problem and I had to take a ferry. I had a 7 axle truck and trailer and was grossing 101,000#. The ferry didn't look that big. Had to go down a small ramp to get on the ferry. I was waiting for the end of the ferry to start to sink as I drive onto it. Didn't even move. Took that weight like it was nothing. Maybe a half hour ride. A few years later I took a set of doubles loaded with empty wine bottles on a ferry up to Victoria, BC. They drop you off in the town square. That was about a 3-4 hour ride, I believe.

I found your channel like 2 weeks ago, I'm thinking of trucking. I got my CDL over the summer in July, I was laid off from my last job in October of 2019, worked here and there and COVID hit, I got my CDL for a school bus company here in PA. Love being out all the time seeing different areas. No more Corporate office life for me. Maybe this summer I'll find something in trucking after I get time behind the wheel. Great vids, keep up the great work and stay safe!

It is so refreshing to see a woman truck driver (I know there are lots of them around) doing a blog of life on the road. I used to be a truck driver myself and was one of the first female drivers on the East Coast of the US. I drove locally delivering eggs in the Tri-state area and did 4 years cross country with a company called JB Hunt out of Arkansas. I will definitely be watching your videos and reliving that experience through your eyes. Love the videos x
