  • From Spanish Rule To Miss Universe: Why Some Filipinos Still Struggle With Colorism.
Welcome to this podcast on the colonial roots of colorism in the Philippines. The recent backlash against Miss Universe Philippines 2024 winner Chelsea Manalo due to her dark skin is unfortunately rooted in centuries of European colonization.
Over 400 years of colonization ingrained Eurocentric ideals glorifying lighter skin tones. Examining this legacy is key to understanding colorism's insidious impacts on Filipino society today. The backlash against Chelsea Manalo's win underscores how much more progress is needed.

As a Filipino, it is only social media that is making the issue larger than what it actually is.
First, take note that NOT all Filipinas use skin whitening products. Second,. a lot of Filipinas are embracing their morena tanned skin. In fact, the new Miss Universe Philippines is a Filipino- African American who is well-received and applauded by the majority as woman of color. . If colorism is still an issue, why is she being celebrated and accepted and loved?

As a Filipino myself, I can see that racism and colorism still exist and is widespread in this generation. While there are people who embrace diversity, there are still a lot of those who look down on colored people.

Don't get the Filipinos wrong! They discriminate darker colors other than that of African origin as well. Even though we are of mixed race that mostly originated from Malaysia and Indonesia, there are actual Indigenous aboriginals with even darker skin color that probably inhabited the entire archipelago before other races did. Yes this indifference towards darker complexion was the product of hundreds of years of colonization. So I think having Chelsey Manalo as their representative to the Miss Universe pageant will open the Filipinos' eyes to look beyond skin color. Yes I'm also a Filipino but living here in the US for almost 40 years now. I don't think they have a full blown institutional racism in the Philippines like here in the US. So let's hope it will never happen there.

Yup, unfortunately, over 300 years of colonization by white Europeans, followed by another 50 years of colonial rule by an America that was still grappling with its own issues of race have left a lasting mark on our collective psyche. I really hope that crowning Chelsea (a truly deserving winner) goes a long way towards helping us Filipinos collectively grow up and move away from this unhealthy obsession with light skin.

She was my bet to win, my family had different bets, like 4th runner up and the 2nd runner up. But it was her composure, uniqueness and charisma that charmed me.
