I remember my brother and I playing against Patrick Kane in a buffalo Junior tournament after losing to little caesars. I never knew the kid was going places. He was tiny like marner at 12 years old, stayed tiny when we played at 15 and 16 years old and Marner somehow got to 5’10-6’0 while Kane got stuck at 5’7. You just never know whose going to go. You could say Mcdavid was born great but that isn’t true. It’s about dry land training, vision for the game, working on your shot 6 hours a day and finally working on balance and puck handling for hours a day. Compound that over a decade of hockey and you become great. Get injured or quit to play another sport and you will never make the NHL. It requires a consistent path majority of the time.
i played on mcdavids team as a little kid too, he played a year up. We'd also play in tournaments a year up too cause we'd win every game 20-0, mcdavid was insane at 7 years old, way faster and a super high hockey iq. i remember watching him from the bench come down on a breakaway and shot over the net to wrap his own shot into the net before anyone else could raise the puck lol
I went to my buddy's 6 year old kid's spring team tourney. The parent's, well some of them conspired to get a lesser skilled kid kicked off the team. 6 year old kid! It was sick to me, to be on the parental side of it for the 1st time instead of the kid playing on thw ice. At 6 years old they are just learning to play and they were being so hard on these kids trying to just have fun and learn. Thankfully my buddy got it and after was like dude I know! I just want my kid to have fun, his kid was the best and you'd see the parents kinda suck up to my buddy and praise the kid. This other guy had a beer with us in the barn bar and he laughed about it as well, understood these parents were nuts for expecting their kids to be playing like pros at 6. They can't tie their own fucking skates. Parents ended up getting that kid kicked off. Can you imagine that kid being told he cant play with his friends anymore? You just hurt the kid big time.
I was a minor hockey coach. Parents are a nightmare. I banned them from entering the locker room for the first 5 minutes after every game. I literally had to guard the door. After one game on a road trip where we got beat pretty bad, someone started pounding on the locker room door. I opened it up only to find one of the parents telling me i'd better come because a group of our parents and the other teams parents were about to have a scrap. I kid you not. I I go outside the arena to find a lot of very angry parents pressing faces against each other. I get into the middle of the fray to be the voice of reason, only to have this big hulking truck driver of a coach of the other team challenge me. I mean, really?? In the end i convinced the parents one by one to go back inside and get their kid. And, yeah, I have story after story...
its actually nuts, I played house league in a very small community from when I was 4 - 18, the amount of shit I heard from parents was nuts, like it was house league, none of us were going anywhere, but you'd think it was Game 7 of the Stanley Cup playoffs the way the parents were sound, yelling at their kid that their worthless, or yelling at the other team calling them a bunch of pretty extreme shit, and my all time favourite was a parent yelling at their kid to go out and try to injure us, like we're 12, playing a sport we enjoy to have an activity to do during the cold winter months and you want to injure us because were winning? like i the amount of times getting a concussion was just "normal" because we all got them because we had to play teams who players on them who were being told it didn't matter if they won or lost as long as one of us had to be helped off the ice and not get to play the rest of the season. I honestly never understood how parents get so lost in a game like that especially at such a minor level
i played in the silver stick tourney a few times.. the best teams are there.. it is a big deal for the players, parents and scouts.. lotsa fun and stress..
Oh this is why losing now doesnt bother them so much. Mitch has been beaten down in defeat his whole life so now it feels normal to lose first round every year. Makes sense now
I wonder if Leafs management would have seen this clip of Marner saying he doesn't care about losing A big playoff game if they would still have drafted him. Cause it looks like he still doesn't care.
I don't think the tough love is what got him to the NHL, might've improved his work ethic but the talent was there and the love for the game in him has got to be incredible to take shit from his dad for years and still adore hockey to this day regardless of the negative childhood memories.
JD Marshall tough love definitely helped. Kept Mitch accountable when he got lazy after a missed shot and sulked in the corner instead of getting back in the play. Half the stuff he yelled during the game, Mitch couldn’t hear anyway.

Fucking epic game the other day! Phucking EPIC.
You can’t be great without the work ,not even Gretzky was born great
i played on mcdavids team as a little kid too, he played a year up.
“Hit the net Mitch!!! “ Yeah got it thanks dad
can't help but think Paul intentionally got that drink and nothing for Mitch looool.
Mitch u are my idle luv this kid
Marner not a big kid in Peewee and now one of the best play makers. Impressive.
This is The Silver Stick Competition in Port Huron, Michigan. Its held at McMoran Arena
M Williams that is messed up big time
Some think it is better than lottery tickets
Sports should never mean more to the parents than it does to the kids
Funny how this worked out in the end, they both are NHL players, it's like cbc knew they were gonna NHLers..kool story
fifty mission cap they were the best players in that league at that point and it was a top league for their age.
Dude that is my hometown hockey rink glacier point that’s awesome
Little Mitch Marner. A TORONTO rising superhero.
Bring a couple rounds of layoff hockey then they'll be superstars.
mitch bringing the speaker for the boys
Rockin' the 80's style ghetto blaster haha
I was a minor hockey coach. Parents are a nightmare. I banned them from entering the locker room for the first 5 minutes after every game. I literally had to guard the door.
After one game on a road trip where we got beat pretty bad, someone started pounding on the locker room door. I opened it up only to find one of the parents telling me i'd better come because a group of our parents and the other teams parents were about to have a scrap. I kid you not. I
I go outside the arena to find a lot of very angry parents pressing faces against each other.
This is litarly every parent especially mine since my dad is one of the coach’s
That shootout goal was filth
My dad would scream at me tell mid game I told him to shut the fuck up in front of everyone.. he kept it for the car after that
"What are you gonna tell your mom... jusg another game eh mitch?" Hjaha
“When the game was over just start hitting guys”. The leafs need Paul on the bench
Papercuthero1 when I heard that I got so happy bc that is my logic, even though I am a kid and not a parent
@@RandomPerson-gn7fu lmao that was litterally me playing rep in high school
Papercuthero1 should be hit guys all throughout lol
i played in the silver stick tourney a few times.. the best teams are there.. it is a big deal for the players, parents and scouts.. lotsa fun and stress..
Oh this is why losing now doesnt bother them so much. Mitch has been beaten down in defeat his whole life so now it feels normal to lose first round every year. Makes sense now
3:00 you don’t wanna mess with this woman…
Psychopath parents. Need treatment.
Not just hockey parents ,all of us need to put our children ahead of our own needs.
"oh there ya go mitch"
Both kids making millions in the show.. this documentary certainly proves it was worth it.
but he also probably needs therapy, at least he can afford it
@@lethargy764 lmao did you need to copy and paste this 10+ times
@@rollinmdma yeah
I wonder if Leafs management would have seen this clip of Marner saying he doesn't care about losing A big playoff game if they would still have drafted him. Cause it looks like he still doesn't care.
Marners dad's tough love got him to the NHL with the Maple Leafs!
Mitch would have made the NHL if his dad was a house plant
Maddie F facts... this kid has god given talent
I don't think the tough love is what got him to the NHL, might've improved his work ethic but the talent was there and the love for the game in him has got to be incredible to take shit from his dad for years and still adore hockey to this day regardless of the negative childhood memories.
@Jake You tryna drop the gloves ya duster?
JD Marshall tough love definitely helped. Kept Mitch accountable when he got lazy after a missed shot and sulked in the corner instead of getting back in the play. Half the stuff he yelled during the game, Mitch couldn’t hear anyway.
I wouldn't be so hard on Paul. I don't know him or Mitch....but I know my own relationship with my father. He's in his 80's now. Old school style of coaching and pushing me to reach my goals. I would definitely do it differently today, but can't hate my Pops for it! He's a great Man. I got lucky.
"You better get fkn skating mitch i swear to god" hahaha
Mitch would have made the NHL with or without the abuse....he’s talented....Paul’s not!
Linda Kirk definitely not, with out Paul mitch wouldn’t be where he is today
Haha is advice when the game was over in the 3rd "Just start hitting guys" lmao little Mitchy isn't a hitter. This guy should be the father of Tom Wilson.
gєкуυмє you sir are an idiot....Mitch Marner was a winner and destined to go to the NHL the day he was born...just destiny that he was born to Paul Marner. This so called father should have been thrown out of the arena & reported for child abuse!
Linda Kirk sorry but what abuse?
gєкуυмє is that a way to talk to a child? That’s called abuse...you sir must be in the same category as Paul Marner! Verbal abuse is as harmful as physical abuse...you sir are still an idiot!
WISH my parents are like this i need that motivation
Ayyy repping Vaughan boys
Paul Marner’s fucking crazy.
Love to see the home rinks Mcmorin and glacier
Hockey Life!!
"You better get fuckin' skatin Mitch, I swear to God!!!"
Now these kids are in the NHL. It paid off
What? Fucking a person's childhood up? That worth it?
xCestLaVie1 that contract
xCestLaVie1 No but pushing them to their limits to help them achieve their goals are.
Clicked to watch Mitch, left because of Paul's hat.
Dad used to do the exact same with me growing up. Made me a better human being in my mind.
Paul made a great investment, hope Mitch gives back to his dad.
That's not why u put ur kid into sports numb nuts
The way he treated Mitch, what a potholed faced asshat the way he talks to his kid
@@richgraham4416 ha ha
@@richgraham4416 sometimes tough love is how you have to teach your kid discipline, and look how he turned out, the best in his sport and he's not even average NHL size but his discipline and work ethic got him success, I'm sure he's pretty grateful now, unless you have footage or stories of him actually hurting his son.
@@JD-tm4ee The end product does not justify the means....it is very possible that Mitch resents his Dad regardless of "success".
This type of parenting is why so many kids burn out of sports, or academics, and end up resenting their parents.
3:01 this why my parents never sit at the benches
Mitchy Mitch Marner
" U better get fucking skating mitch i swear to god"🤣🤣
The best part is when parents drop the mitts, throw that in a mini documentary
No one was harder on me than my dad playing hockey. I played high level AAA, Jr A and college hockey. I never made it to the NHL but I run a full time business training hockey players and giving them the tools they need to become better on and off the ice.
With all that said it's a tough sport and Mitch's dad did the best he knew how to do in raising his son in the sport of hockey and look where it got him, in the NHL with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Great job to Paul and Mitch!
Alot of you in the comments need to learn Mind over Emotions! It's okay to feel how you feel but we need to learn how to deal with those emotions to become better in all areas of life.
the dad's should be able to also "learn" mind over emotion, seeing as they're the adults
3:25
“Nigga you kiddin me!” 😩😩
Now the kid is worth 11mil. #Goals !!
Is there a full documentary?
It all paid for the Marner,he's living the dream
Robert Stacey literally, he probably dreamed about this exactly
Those bits about McLeod hit different in 2024 💀
If Mitch listened to his dad, Pasternak wouldn't have skated past him. "YOU BETTER GET F---IN' SKATIN' MITCH I SWEAR TO GOD! "
it's funny how mitch and michael are friends now, but they didnt know eachother when this was made
