Hey Sam! I work with your boo, Swayne. During my time on active duty, I did two DIY moves and two “hey military, you do everything because I can’t deal with this” moves. I did DIY anytime I could drive, and the military moves were from mainland to Hawaii and back. I will say, even when the military moves everything, I still did all the packing myself of everything but the kitchen. I wanted to ensure I knew exactly what box had what, as well as ensure my breakables were packed well. There are a ton of Facebook pages to help first time movers find out how to make it easier as well as tips/tricks. The base spouse Facebook pages are always a great resources, especially after getting settled. The spouse pages are a good place to find boxes for your DIY for free as well as get rid of them when you are done. Hope to meet you one day! Good luck at your new duty station!

Very good video, showed the level of planning needed for a move. Moving with family and especially internationally can be such a challenge. I've moved 14 times with my husband and children, including to Hawaii and Germany/UK. With more gear get professional removalists from the start. Keep an inventory of what you have, this is important because lot's of removalists will be less than gentle with your furniture and very beloved decorations :). Something will ALWAYS get broken, you'll need to make reimbursement claims. Make sure to pack boxes by room. Take advantage of air and sea freight for your different furniture, always bring the most essential with you on the flight/drive. The days before organise yourself so that in the chaos of moving day the removalists can just grab and go, they aren't going to do any critical thinking over a cute organisation system you devised. Hope this helps!

I have done this many times (too many to count) with being connected to the military !!! Most of the time the military paid for the moves. Even though they used moving companies we still had things right out missing or broken. You never get full imbursement for what it's value was or replacement. Used Two Men and A Truck once to move and still had slight damage. They made good though. Even when we moved ourselves we had damage sometimes. Goes with moving. All in all good. We moved sometimes with just a year between duty stations, lol. It was a two to three years other times. Also depends on short tours or long. A short tour was two years and a long tour was three years generaly. It depends on if tour by yourself and no family accompanying. Easier when single and no dependents.
Kinda miss those days, lol ! Thank you for sharing.

I made most of my 8 moves as a single Sailor, so like you, jammed the tunes and munched my way back and forth across the country. When I had the wife and kids along, we played spotting cars and license plates, the kids would make a list of every state they saw trying to get all 50 states. Ideally the tongue of the trailer weighs about 10% of the total loaded trailer (4000lb load = 400lb tongue weight). Should allow you to travel at a little higher speeds and be more stable doing it. Keep up the good work, enjoy your videos!

Oh my, how I suffer... first my mistake was a car - I own hatchback, Ford Focus 2nd gen RS and I love that car, but it's something I'm jelous in your case, Jeep SUV was probably better choice :D Trip took me two days, 17 hours drive, one sleepover in the hotel, and only thing You can basically do, is listen to radio and your own music..
My second was no buddy to share my suffering with. Third I packed all my stuff, I throw up a little. Unpacking took me ethernity!

I did many moves when in the AF. You have options, one is to set back and have the movers come in and pack and move everything. Then you can drive or have the govt buy you a ticket.
If you choose a self move you rent a truck or use your own or a friend's truck then weigh your truck empty then load it and weigh it again. Then drive to your next station and unload. The government will pay you so much per pound. When I moved from Colorado springs to Castle AFB Ca I got about $1.50 per pound and I had 12,000 pounds. The truck cost about $2500.00.
The govt also paid me and wife and kids for meals and motel plus 30 days for a motel when I got there.
I have known people to put a waterbed in the truck and fill it before weighing then drain it when outside the weigh station. Or fill it up with real heavy stuff. My last move was a civil service civilian.
DLA is an extra months housing costs. Also you get one day for about every 300 miles. It's technically against regs to drive over 300 miles a day.

Did one DITY move, never again, after that I let the USAF handle it. BUT, if you opt for contractors be aware that they will pack and ship EVERYTHING. We received a half full trashcan that traveled 2000 miles, and a half full ashtray.
So prepare accordingly. The tradeoff is, shipping by contractor takes longer, you may be at your destination for weeks before your stuff arrives, so make sure you have uniforms, including footwear and headgear with you. Depending on job, it may be just utilities or combo office uniforms as well.

Incorrect tongue weight due to improper loading is the greatest cause for a trailer to not be stable when towing. That can also be caused by loading one side or the other heavier than the other. You fly guys do that with your planes; trailers are the same way.
