    Freeway bridges are usually constructed to connect places and people. This bridge never accomplished either!

    As a former broadcast engineer and editor, I can say without hesitation that this one of the finest exploration videos I have ever seen. Well researched, competently photographed, and slickly edited, it stands out as what You Tube documentarians should strive to achieve.

    The actual third tunnel is once you cross the Bridge to Nowhere. Rock slides, on the north side of the bridge, block the tunnel. If you walk around the hilltop (requires you to descend towards the water and back up on the north side of the hilltop on north side of bridge, you may see a small crawl space in loose rock and this is the third automobile size [Shoemaker] tunnel entrance/exit. Caution: rock slides may close the entrance at any time and there is a known mountain lion that births her cubs in this tunnel in the recent past. Make sure someone knows you’re hiking here and to call rescue if you do not return in time. Please take plenty of water (-1- gallon min per person) as it is 10 miles round-trip, most of it in the sun. Dogs have a hard time getting to the Bridge to Nowhere due to sharp rocks cutting their feet during the hike in. The first 5 miles are uphill.

      Yeah H Daniel...I live in the MO Ozarks and back in the 70s there was an offbeat park with scenic shut-ins you had to hike to, with crystal clear spring-fed water & granite rocks intermingled...natural basking and swimming. It's now been Federalized & rebuilt so that the 1st thing you see when entering the lot is a tinted 1-way glass block house bristling with antennae and cameras and a barricade gate! Hmmmm...wonder why that is? Could it be - you got caught with a warrant out for blowing off paying your parking tickets?! Huh!? ;-)

    Awesome video! I hiked to that bridge several times back in the 90s. Fair warning, the time of year you go and the weather can have a huge impact on the trail conditions. You cross the river several times on your way to the bridge. The first few times I made the hike, the river was a few inches deep and little more than a refreshing cool relief from the otherwise blazing heat. The last time I attempted the hike, the river was chest deep and raging. After barely making it past the second crossing, we turned back.

    first trip here was in the late 70's... Last time I was there was probably around 1990. There was a tunnel at the far end of the bridge,
    that was blasted closed. I remember being able to go around the back side and you could still shimmy through a crack and get inside the old tunnel.

    There used to be a well-worn 4WDJeep Trail that led to the bridge from the end of East Fork Road prior to the floods of January and February 1969, which took out the entire trail and made the trek to the bridge much more arduous. The light colored mineral at Swan Rock is actually albite (plagioclase feldspar), not quartz. There was a completed tunnel through the ridge at the northeastern abutment, which the Forest Service had blasted closed at either end when they stood up The Narrows trail camp, a few hundred yards upstream, in the Narrows, in 1959. The storm of March 2, 1938 was a real whopper in terms of its short-duration intensity, but the flows of February 1969 were much higher, because of elevated antecedent moisture. I first visited the bridge on Labor Day weekend 1969, and we didn't see another person. In those days the entire area was closed between Memorial Day and Labor Day due to elevated fire danger.

Take any trail on the back way of highway two in the San Gabriel mountains and I’m sure you will find water. The people of our town try very hard to keep everything clean for the wildlife that surrounds us. Heart breaking to see all the broken sleds left on the ground when the snow melts. Enjoy our waterfalls creeks and bridges but take your waste with you JUST LIKE WE DO.

The trail disappeared several times but we manage to find our way there. 'A very rewarding hike to be sure. I still remember the guy who led the bungee jump. He passed us by like we were standing still and was shortly in the distance. We waited around when we were there in the pools hoping to see some bungee jumping but people kept coming and there was a lot of safety information given. We finally just took off as it was getting late. Great time.

      Thank you so much for watching! Wishing you the best of adventures on your next Bridge to Nowhere trek. Next month would probably be a great time weather-wise too. Take care! :)

    I ran along the river to the Bridge to Nowhere maybe 30 year ago. Most people didn't know about it. Your route was completely different. And when I went, there was just the bridge. I wanted to do the run again but somehow didn't. Now it looks like they tamed the route and it's a tourist spot. It's still pretty cool, but not the same experience. Later, I saw a commercial filmed there with William Shatner (Star Trek). I wondered how they got there to do the filming!

    • @OddityOdysseys
      @OddityOdysseys  Před rokem +2

      These days, the bridge and surrounding area are owned by Bungee America, and they have a small helicopter they use to transport supplies and personnel from HQ to the bridge. That's most likely how Shatner got out there. Somehow I just can't see him hiking those 10 miles.

    Wow, what a great episode. I am reacting to this in a bunch of ways! First of all, the shots are beautiful, including those of the two hosts, whose chemistry makes a very informative adventure also FUN! This couldn't have been an easy shoot, no way! It's gorgeous and enhanced by the soundtrack...perfect. Next, the story is so curious! Oddity Odysseys always has such a wonderful story at each episode's foundation. The theme of your story here, of course, is that nature will prevail (and maybe that one less highway in the world isn't such a bad thing)! Yes...and yet the bridge is glorious, not yet washed away by weather or by time. Now it lures hikers and bungee jumpers as well as storytellers! Thanks for a great first episode. More, more more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I spent an awesome Sunday bungee jumping off this bridge back in the early 90's. We placed a sheet, with a target painted on it, over the large rock directly below the bridge.

    I spent a lot of time hiking and camping in this canyon... here's something you won't find elsewhere... there is a tunnel in that hill behind the rock face where the bridge ends. You have to go around the other side of the hill, scramble up the rocks etc and find the hole. There are even curbs in the tunnel. I haven't been up there in 25 years or so.. the entrance may be hard to find now.... but it's there! apparently the road construction crew had nearly completed the tunnel when the flood washed out the road down the canyon, so the tunnel was never completed and the entrance covered over. Mainly what was left was to blast out the entrance at the bridge... The tunnel looks very similar to the tunnels over on Shoemaker Canyon Rd. The farthest I've been up that canyon was 13 mi. hiking/camping... when I was far younger and agile! Brings back a lot of great memories! and a few bad ones... being accosted by hostile gang members on the trail and having our vehicles vandalized while away for a multi-day hike/camp.

      Steven, thank you for all the comments! We're glad you're enjoying our channel!! Actually when we shot the episode, we went looking for the tunnel you mentioned but we never found it, so we did not include even a mention of it in the episode. Perhaps we'll go back sometime and look a little more closely. Thanks again!

    In Durham, NC there is a bridge to nowhere. It crosses the Durham freeway just north of Duke University. I believe the bridge was used when Duke University was being constructed in the 1930s. The bridge carried a rail line that connected the main rail line with the university area. The rail line used to also cross Erwin Rd right in front of the emergency entrance for the hospital.
