- 'Off-Hours with Michael Alesi' is a series about restaurants - the ones that are hidden gems, family-run, and tucked into that corner you've always walked by. Restaurants that veteran cooks like Mike will escape into with their precious time-off. Take a seat and you might find your new 'Off-Hours' spot in the neighborhood.
Mogadishu Restaurant was a delightful discovery! The Enjera was light and flavorful, the perfect accompaniment to the rich and savory Oodkac. And don't miss the Somali Tea - it was a soulful and warming companion to a delicious meal.

Thank you all for your wonderful comments and tips on how to better eat, I look forward to continuous learning on how to eat and enjoyment of Somalian food :)
I thought the same thing. Bananas are for savoury dishes not laxoox and shaah. Muqmad and laxoox with shaah caddeys ah is enough of a breakfast.
In somali culture, we eat banan with rice, pasta, and soor with spinich souce(polenta) dishes only❤😘
all this admiration belong to our great Somali women and Mama's who deserve to be mention.
yes thanks for the reminder
I’m Somali, but I’ve never eaten banana with injera. In my family, we do the injera, oodkac, honey, ghee and we pour the hot tea over the injera. The injera will soak up that tea and you get that floral, tea with every bite Along with the salty meat
Me too!!
We eat banana with bariis and baasto
Never laxoox/canjeero.
if you are from the South, then you know banana goes with everything that you are comfortable with.
@@LJama6119 waa runtaa just only south Somaliya
Canjeelo ayaa leenahay injera dad kalaa leh marka dhaqankaaga markasta sidaad adigu u taqaano ugu dhawaaq si uusan khalkhal u galin👍🏽
It is not 'injera.' It is called *canjeero.* Canjeero is nothing like the bitter, yeast-ladden injera. Afkaaga iyo cuntadaada hormari.
Somalian food is one of the best in the world thank you sharing with us
No matter where you from good food is a good and will bring people together
Oh man your lucky because I love odkac but there is no odkac in this area😢😢 last time I eat ODKAC AND ANJEERO was in mogadishu 2014❤❤❤❤ ENJOY WATCHING YOUR VIDEO AND THANKS FOR MAKING ME FEEL HUNGERY😂😂😂😂
I like muqumad. Odkac and canjelo it is my culture 😋
Thanks for showcasing Somali cuisine, and this my to go place in Chicago.
Our pleasure!
Hi chef they didn’t tell you the history of Odkac which is Odkac doesn’t not need refrigerator for weeks and it was travelers best food to carry in pre refrigerator world.
The simplicity you have explained and the simplicity the food is made flabbergasted me. Thank you.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I love your genuine appreciation for our cuisine. And I’m happy Somali food was a source of comfort for u during a difficult time. With such curiosity and humility, I think you’ll be alright
OMG that's my favorite breakfast inkers banana honey oodkac man I'm so proud to be somali
Love it I hope we welcome to you in Mogadishu somalia 🇸🇴
Canjeero and muqmad❤
I’m curious to know how non-Somalis discover Somali culture, we are very tight knit and this often deters people from indulging in our foods/culture. Very odd/refreshing to see a video like this that is not for views like the ones we see on tiktok. Great video!
Certain people who are youtubers especializing in food tasting and introducing different foods to western audience will always find Somali restaurants in different places
By tight knit - you mean a closed culture I presume? No somalis are not closed to outsiders. Their restaurants just focus on serving somali customers only and so there is no advertising to others and the standards - decor, cleanliness etc - are often below what is expected by the general customer base. That's why they don't get a lot of non somali traffic but that is changing slowly.
Odkac an Anjeelo are traditional Somali food, with Ghee, Sesame oil and tea but not banana .
We eat banana with rice, pasta with meat and sauce. Somali food is most tasteful.
When i was young it's my favorite breakfast that time 😂😂😂
Thank you for trying our food. Wishing you the best with your next job. I am a new subscriber.
Banans are rarely used with anjera mainly we use when ur having rice or spagheti dishes.
Thank you for showing my favourite food love it
This is the best breakfast I have ever had, sometimes i ordered 2 times or 3 times i miss it very much
that is uniqe breakfast somalis do and is traditonal food about hundrens years by found people from bush becaouse it stays for long time they were butting fresh butter but these days people wants to but oil but is good with butter. these even they use for wedding when the new family eats every morning.
We appreciate you trying to taste Somali food. I hope you enjoy this yummy Somali breakfast we Somalis have. Somalis don’t usually eat this with banana. 💙
Thank you we appreciate this! We definitely want to go back and try it with the tea as everyone has mentioned :)
I’m Somali 🇸🇴, thanks brother for your love 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿💯😢
More Somalia 🇸🇴 my brother let’s get you to over 1k
well done perfecto somali stuffff 😉
Thanks for teaching our food others
The pancake with the meat and ghee then lightly drizzle some honey and black tea.Thats the best way imo.I haven’t had with sesame oil or olive oil.Didnt know oilve oil was even used for this. But ghee is more traditional and never with Banana, maybe Mogdishu twists.
Olive oil or sesame can be used or ghee . Most traditional is ghee then sesame then olive oil
Bro try next time bariis and hilib and sambuus
Good meal for an active person.
The tea needs to be on the Canjeelo 😭
Thak you bruh for testing our national dish 👍👏
Well done mate, hope you enjoyed it! Now to the important part, whoever let my man eat canjeelo and oodkac dry is a criminal 😂. They should've provided you with hot black tea to pour over the canjeelo just like they did the sesame oil (which is the traditional way). The black tea is what's supposed to add the sweetness (traditionally) and it does also bring out more flavours from the meat as it soaks into both the meat and the canjeelo whilst forming a lovely union with the sesame oil. When you eat it with the banana instead of the black tea you lose all of those flavours (except the sweetness which is only a fraction of the flavours) as the banana really doesn't soak into anything and therefore doesn't bring out the complex mix of flavours the that the dish has the potential to unearth. Bananas are usually eaten during lunch with rice and pasta. All other dishes are banana free (traditionally). So suqaar, hilib geel (waslaad), sabaayad, malawax, oodkac & canjeelo etc are traditionally eaten without the banana! Try it with the black tea and sesame oil next time, you'll thank me😊
Update: I saw that they gave you the black tea, but forgot to tell you what it was for (not just for drinking in this case). Add it next time and skip the honey, I think you'll love it even more.
@@inaabdi4738 Thank you! We definitely want to go back and try this :) - it sounds amazing with the tea! we appreciate the awesome tips.
@@threetopproductions My pleasure, let me know how you find it!!
Real nice deserves a like❤❤❤
Anjera and odkac i liked ❤
Yummy, made me want to make oodkac!
Nice 👍 you should pour the eat over the anjera to soften it❤
I tried it too it's delicious
Watching this while eating anjera😂❤
You need to get Malawax, it’s 10x better than Canjelo in every way and is also amazing with Odkac
you can use one oil at time
Oodkac is the best 😋
Next breakfast try goat liver with Chicago Italian bread.
Well done i like canjeero and odkac
Habe nice Day mashallah bruder
Odkac is very oily but it’s so daam good
Mogadishu restaurant super ❤❤
Nice
Goood🇸🇴🇸🇴👊🏾
🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪really it’s my favorite 😍 food
You need to pour hot tea then onky youll get the reall teste of anjers with odkac dish.
Thank you! We'll definitely have to pour the hot tea on it next time we go.
Yami love it
I'm somali and I confidently say banana does not come with everything as shown in many somali food trying videos. It comes with rice and sometimes with pasta.
Nice Somali food is good
I nevet eat banana with anjera but with nice and pasta.
Nice food i like
Good horey usoco walaallo
wow somali food
I had it last year when I went back to Somalia.
You should have added some spicy tea without the milk on top of the dish that raises the flavour of the dish the injera, spicy tea, hone and the ghee with the chewiness and flavour of the meat just blend so deliciously 😊
Thank you for the tips we'll have to do that next time!
My Somali food i loved ❤
Anjeero & oodka❤❤❤
Can someone send me that odka (fried meat) or whatever they call it in English 😆 sucks to be away from home 😢 🐪 😋
Yummy
Somalia is the best
yummy yummy
Anjera with bananas 😮definitely someone is messing with you 😂
Muqmad or udkac it’s something come from North Somalia
❤❤❤❤
Odka cajeera
Ghee or Olive oil. Taste of Sesame oil is not good but they prefer it in South Somalia for some weird reason but it's ghee the traditional way or olive oil that's how it was done and its delightful. The taste of sesame oil is off-putting to say the least!
❤🇸🇴✌🏻👍🏻🇸🇴🇸🇴🇸🇴🇸🇴🇸🇴🇸🇴✅️
Somaliyeey, meesha magaciina lagasheego, xaadir ayaa tihiin 😂😂
Bro you ain’t even tried the dinner food special hilib which is lamb shoulder
Wwwww 🇸🇴🇸🇴❤❤
💖🌺🇸🇴
Mogadishu restaurant is my favorite
Maxaa oday badan odkac lagu dilay😂😂😂😂 .
Odayga odkac haloo jaro micnaha ticket aaqiiro haloo jaro beey lamid tahay😂😂😂
Qof waa yeel ah oo saliid la siiyay maxaa ka haraayo😂😂😂
When it comes to anjeero there isn't one way to it. Eat it the way you want to eat bro.
I like to eat the Odka and anjeera separately not mixed up.
🇹🇷❤️
🇸🇴👍
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
You are eating with your both hands. it's ok you will learn
Yow❤
This is Anjero not Injeera Ethiopian made totally from different things. The type of dish you have usually goes not with banana. There is a false myth Somalis eat everything with bananas which is untrue! With some dishes some do, it's just like a side thing like chilli
Thank you for the clarification we appreciate it!
@@threetopproductions My pleasure and thanks for sharing the food .
Some people eat everything with the banana especially down south 😭
Next time try rice and goat meat 🍖
Oh yeah everything with bananas specially East Coast and south Somalia yummy not if you’re northern Somalia
Somalian food is good bro
Canjeero saliid lagu darayo OO
Hadana odkax lagu cunaayo waligeey ma arag 😂😂😂
Maxaa yeelay odkaca waaba saliid badanyahay sidee saliid kale loogu daraa😂😂 war dadka ha waalina😂😂😂
I think it's American thing or should I say Chicago thing eating canjeero iyo oodkac with banana (not Somalian🇸🇴🇸🇴🇸🇴🇸🇴🇸🇴🇸🇴🇸🇴🇸🇴)
Correction, it's Somalis not Somalians!
bro who told you to eat odkac with banana oh man he should go to jail who ever its
