It can be fascinating and terrifying. But I don't just film it, I do it ... living with the tribe, eating with the tribe and doing whatever it takes to be a man in their world. 12 X 1 hour episodes produced by Seven Productions.

Tim, it is an amazing work. In modern culture, the rite of passage from boyhood to manhood is seen obsolete, archaic, backward, out of date, thus its value is not much appreciated anymore. But for these people, it goes beyond. It's a journey of life, a way of appreciating life by living with meaning. It's not just a question of being a "strong man" in terms of physical strength, but strong to its core, of life itself, the value of life. Only those who experience "true pain" are the ones who can value its worth, to say paradoxically, "ONLY THOSE WHO DIED ONCE WILL BE THE ONE WHO REALLY KNOW THE TRUE MEANING OF LIVING, OF BEING ALIVE", and thus they are the ones who really enjoy being alive...

I remember doing an initiation ritual as part of my drama course at uni and it was a powerful experience. These clips make me a lightweight. Great concept. I would be interested to see one of your episodes when you discuss or explore what it takes for Australian men to become a man because I think this is missing outside our Aboriginal brothers' walkabout.
