Seeing as how Sean Cunningham never intended for this film to be anything other than a cheap Halloween knock-off, I'd say it exceeded everyone's expectations.
It seems more realistic in some ways that some angry ex-employee would have a workplace violent killing spree. It happens in real life & usually long after the employee was fired.

This movie , and Halloween, would come to define my entire life. I instantly became a fan of both movies, and I will not pick one over the other as my favorite, because my love for each of them is that strong. I am now, just having a birthday yesterday, a 49 year old man, with a bedroom completely filled with horror memorabilia, especially from these movies. And , I might add, I also received a personal Happy Birthday message from Adrienne King who plays Alice. We met at a convention several years ago and she is such a sweetheart.
That's awesome. I'd really love to maybe someday visit the original camp tours they have that she hosts. But not sure if that will happen now. Salute to you and fellow horror fan👍🔪😱
@ Earl Leary Oh yeah, sounds like we’d be friends... Those are the two most epic movies for me too. Michael Myers is the one that I always pictured lurking in the shadows, but I was equally as terrified of Jason... It was a paradox- I’d HAVE to watch them (over & over & over) then would inevitably be too terrified to close my eyes for the following several nights. I think it wasn’t until I was 22 or 23 that I could actually handle going to sleep in the dark.... Lol, GOOD TIMES! 👏🏻
I agree, i actually find the first Friday quite creepy and unsettling in areas, like that scene where you see the curtain move briefly if you know what Im referring to, I think its a curtain lol But theres a real suttle vibe and odd atmosphere. I feel that was lost in the sequels even though I love Jason.
@@PungiFungi The scene where Alice is making coffee is brilliant. By that time, there are only two people left. You know that one will probably die at any moment. Plus, it was early in the slasher cycle...the idea that the last person will usually be a girl was not so ingrained at that time. The scene where she makes the coffee was a good solid two minutes long...excruciatingly long when you know something is GOING to happen, but you're not sure when, or who's going to get killed. When she goes into that pantry closet, you just KNOW something's going to happen to her. But it doesn't. This movie is a masterpiece. And the scenes where nothing happens are a big factor in that.
@@JimTheMovieGeek Brilliant point. That scene where the shower curtain shifts is among the most effective things ever done in a slasher movie. You're right, the sequels didn't have the patience that was displayed in the first film. I like the sequels, but the original is in a whole different echelon of film.
Siskel was by far the more humorless and prissy of the two of them, and it rankled him that he never reached the likability or fame of Ebert, who was a somewhat nice person
@@edvaira6891 ,one thing I noticed is they both tended to look down on a lot of movies that were fan favorites....and they gave good reviews of what i considered boring movies.........Yes everyone like something different...that's fine. their negitive look on movies fans like over time became funny because those movies ended up making a ton of money....wiether it was , Horror, Action or Sci-Fi movies.
I have extremely contrasting views of them. On one hand, their passion and love for filmmaking is admirable, and their childish rants are certainly entertaining. Their contribution to the culture of filmmaking is undeniable, and we should forever be grateful for their influence. I'll admit there's a lot to love and respect about them. However, their frequent instances of douchebaggery get overlooked way too often. These guys were kind of assholes if you look past all the unconditional adoration they have achieved for some reason. They should be held responsible for frequently acting like assholes with rocks up their asses. I'm kind of tired of us doing nothing but showering them with love and praise despite the vile and pompous things they frequently did during their careers.

Betsy Palmer should have gone after Gene Siskel with a civil lawsuit for (attempting) to put her personal address out like that (despite being the wrong address). She could have ended up dealing with another Adrienne King stalker situation. He nearly put her life in danger.,

The _Friday the 13th_ films were always a guilty pleasure for me. They may not have the best writing or execution, but they're atmospheric and fun when it comes to scares.
The first one has the creepiest most unnerving movie score ever in my opinion. I mean the lighting sets etc was atmospheric enough but the music is just extremely creepy. Especially the opening scene when someone is creeping in the night. Classic
I also think the "Mother killing for her son after schizophrenic attacks" Makes it scarier as well. It's not like "Oh, there's a monster guy that drowned." It's "Oh my god, this mother needs help."
The original Friday the 13th movie is by far the best. Among all the Fridays it alone makes some sense, has inventive kills, the strongest feature being the musical score, which is excellent. The movie hasn't aged particularly well, but the score is still freakin' eerie, haunting. Love the sound effects. One main reason the sequels are ridiculous is the story line. We're supposed to believe that Jason was clever and resourceful enough to survive in the wild, having tracked down Alice after she beheaded his mother and constructed for himself a makeshift shelter (with a toilet!). He became an adept killer and stalked his victims cunningly. Bottom line: he managed to do all that, yet was unable to reestablish contact with his mother all those preceding years.
I disagree. I like the novelty of having his mother be the killer, but the film is just not very well made. It has a lot of positive aspects, but it just is let down by a poor script and mediocre directing (the two people that fight for the rights of the story). Sure, the sequels are ridiculous in some ways, however, they more than make up for it by improving the formula significantly. Part 2, 4, and 6, in my opinion take what the original film did, and expanded upon it so much, that they justify the wacky plot hole. Part 4 is one of my favorite horror films of that era, and I much prefer it to the original.
Love the original F13th. Hard to believe this was released on May 9th 1980. May 9th is my birthday. I turned 10 when this was released. And here I am almost 50 in 2 weeks. Good lord I'm getting old.
But with age comes wisdom and the experience alone is worth a lifetime of memories. You're very fortunate I definitely grew up in the wrong era. I've grown up with these so much I feel like I almost did.
My dad saw it several times at a drive in theater in 1980. He got me hooked on Friday the 13th from an early age watching a marathon together nearly every Friday the 13th. The nihilism and gritty aesthetic apparent in the film, really works well.
The low budget, the use of an actual run down camp, the cast of unknowns...is why this one is my favorite. Say what you want but this film had real atmosphere and dread, something a lot of horror films back then had and which few, if any have now. I've always said that horror is the one genre that actually benefits from a low budget. Slick and expensive with sloppy cgi ain't scary! Give me practical "dated" effects every time!
I saw this movie in the theater when I was a sophomore in high school . I used to go to camp after I saw this movie I told my mother I was not going to camp that year. I did not go lol. Brings back memories!

I 💘 love Friday the 13th it's my favorite of the franchise. My dream remake would have Adrienne King play Ms Voorhees, Kevin Bacon as crazy Ralph and Ari Lehman as Steve Kristy.
It remains my third favorite of the series, after Part 6 and Final Chapter...for what it is, it is still an effective fun way to spend eighty or so minutes
Yes, Victor Miller has claimed that he named Jason after a guy who would tattle on everybody when he was a child, but he's also claimed that he got the name by combining the names of his sons, which are Josh and Ian, which is all somewhat peculiar when you consider that he was supposedly going to name the character Josh in the first place.
Jeez. This is by far, easily the best and most complete retrospective on F13th I've seen on CZcams, and I've seen quite a few! A thousand congratulations to you! I beg you, please do the same for the sequels. Many of them deserve it. And I'd love to see that.
This was my fave of the series for the longest time, underpinning my Scream 2-esque philosophy that the original in any given series is the best simply because without them the sequels, no matter how good, wouldn't exist. I still mostly hold to that philosophy today but my favorite is now Part 2 simply because it trims so much padding that plagued the original. It was a tighter plot and made for a better movie while still including some of the charms of the original (i.e. the rural summer camp location that is missing from most of the series). I wouldn't mind seeing a remake of this story. I think it could be way more scarier in the right director's hands despite this still being a minor classic in my book. Great series! You put alot of work into these videos and I look forward to seeing more.

Perkins was in the entire film. He owned the hotel & in a sense the hotel was his psyche. His killing began when his mother met his stepfather & his stepfather built the hotel so the building itself was part of his life-he couldn't make a go of it in the diner after he is released in the sequel when he tries to go straight. Palmer on the other hand didn't own the camp & when she says "we can go now" she obviously just wants to leave Crystal Lake after killing the final witness & get back to her life. Unlike Norman, who was stuck in the hotel, Pamela is kind of hasty to leave in her jeep. Steve is an old friend, but he is surprised to see her there. Point is, we get to know Perkins better. But in real life in real workplace violence the victims are like Alice-they have no idea who the ex-employee.
@gregory garner But in real life workplace killing sprees, the new employees have no idea why someone is on a spree. There are also cases where a survivor will speak of having a dream like Bacon's girlfriend did about the events. One got the impression that Pamela was almost killing Alice as an afterthought when she says absently "We can go now" like all she wanted to do was go back to her life. Pamela was not planning on ending her spree with suicide like most spree killers. In the last second when she sees Alice come at her with the machete Palmer manages to convey total surprised fear at the reality that her own life is about to end.
These are so well produced & put together, narrated, I don’t know how this channel isn’t more well known . I’ll post these on my fb since I Have several horror fan friends I know they’ll enjoy these as much as me. It’s the least I can do to try to get this quality channel more traffic!

This was fantastic. F13 (the original) was the very first taste of horror I got as a kid and have been in love with it since, While most look at F13 as a cliche' goof, I take it serious and enjoy its contribution to cinema. The first 4 and part 6 are amazing to watch if going into them with the correct mindset. Fun little sleazy summer flicks.
The scenes of the lake, with the dark filter and the wind blowing over the water absolutely gives me goosebumps every time I see those scenes! They're just beautiful and terribly eerie! Starts at 3:03
Well said. That whole segment was an incredible transition scene. Going from day to night...and from good weather to the storm...so beautifully done. But the shots of the wind in the trees, and on the surface of the water...those were STUNNING.
I genuinely don't have another way to describe it. As I'm not a filmmaker, I don't know how they went about creating such an eerie scene (at least for me) other than suggesting the employment of a "dark filter". That said, if you look back at the early 70's horror and grindhouse pictures (and the 60's horror films using colour rather than black and white, they must've used some type of "dark filter" as the night scenes are quite clearly filmed during broad daylight. I don't know if they knew how to properly light a film which had scenes at night as part of the film.@@randycunningham7318

I was 10 when this movie came out, I remember it so well, because i snuck into the theater, OMG i was freaked out when i left.. didn't sleep much that night.. nor was i happy when my mom sent me away to sleep-away camp 2 months later!!LOL BUT it started my long & happy fascination with all things horror & for many a year after Jason came into play, i was always dressed up as him for Halloween much to my dismay that no one knew who he was until i explained the movie & it became more popular. And now with every Halloween as i decorate.. there is always a Jason waiting in the bush for someone to walk by!
Finding anything about the Friday The 13th series that I don't know is doing something and yet you had several things I didn't know. Keep up the great work!!!
Sean S Cunningham is the film equivalent of "Do you know what they call someone who graduates at the bottom of their class at medical school? Doctor." In all seriousness, I think that the fact that the original Friday the 13th was pretty meh and made a ton of money really inspired a lot of filmmakers to say "maybe I could make money, I can make a better film than Friday the 13th, and that film made tons of money" without realizing the marketing skill of Cunningham is a big reason for the success of the movie. So while not every film made money, we got a lot of good slasher movies, but also a lot of bad ones. In fact the a few best 1981 slashers were not particularly successful as The Prowler, My Bloody Valentine, The Burning and Just Before Dawn actually didn't make a profit or even bombed in theaters. And while it is unfortunate that a lot of great films didn't initially make money, at least the movie inspired new and talented filmmakers to go out there, and even though these are mediocre movies, at least the people behind Happy Birthday to Me and Graduation Day made money even if the films weren't that great. but I think that it made people realize that they had a chance of success and they could really try to make a movie.

This film is not dated in a bad way. It’s a product of its time in the best way possible. Everyone knew the kind of film they were going to make and the film doesn’t really try to be anything it’s not. Being heavily influenced by Halloween, even telling Victor Miller they were going to rip Halloween off and so Miller wrote a script that basically had a bunch of kills and set the film out in the woods at a summer camp so the characters are more isolated from help than in Halloween. It’s because of this isolation and that anyone could be in the woods lurking around all the while the camp councilors are not close to help, the tone and atmosphere the film has is creepier than Halloween to me. This is an excellent film, though I do think the sequels made this film even better as the film basically has a humble beginnings to it when marathoning the franchise.
As if a stalker wasn't bad enough, on the 25th of January 1990, Adrienne King had to deal with a devastating tragedy that scarred her for life. That night, bad weather had been causing aerial traffic jams at the John Kennedy International Airport in New York City, and one inbound plane, AVIANCA Columbia Flight 52 from Bogota ran out of fuel when the pilots didn't declare an emergency. The Boeing B707 passenger plane crashed in the Cove Neck community, literally metres away from King's house. She wasn't hurt, but was the first one on the seen and helped with rescuing survivors and pulling the bodies of victims from the wreckage. Sadly, 73 people onboard the airliner died in the crash, while 85 people survived. Thankfully, King has made a bit of an acting comeback and even reprised the role of Alice Hardy in the "Friday The 13th" fan film "Jason Rising" in 2021, 40 years after she last played the iconic character.
If they would have just ended it with this one movie, and not creating the Jason character, I would have been perfectly happy. For me, this was the scariest movie in the franchise’s history.
I continue to be impressed with the detail and the fascinating information. Friday 6 is my favorite guilty pleasure because of how over the top it is. By the time I saw the original the impact was ruined by the sequels. It's probably been 25 years since I've seen it. Maybe it's worth watching again. Oh here a fun story. I've worked with Tom Savini, he's actually a pretty nice guy on set. At the time I was in film school and we were shooting his first romantic lead role (to this day it's never been completed, but that is a very long story.) While on set he needed a comb and I had one of those knife combs like he used in Dawn of the Dead. He was like "I used one of these in Dawn of the Dead!" I said. "I know, that's why I bought it!" Not sure if I still have it, it was almost 10 years ago now.

I’m 53 years old and I saw this in the theater as a young boy and it made me a horror fan . The creepiness of part 2 and 3 are why I watch horror movies today
Great video. Nowadays people often call this movie boring and tame and what not, and you would hardly find someone who doesnt think at least some of the sequels excell at its job. Well even tho I love the entire franchise, as well as Jason, this will always be the best to me. Its simplicity and almost romanticised time frame vibes make this a truly comforting watch for me, even with it being a murder mystery lol
I wish you'd spent more time on the marketing of this movie, as it's the main reason it became such a success. I do love this movie, but it wasn't popular because it was better than any of the other slashers coming out at the time. Its success is due to it being HEAVILY marketed to teens and opening on a ton of screens, which was unprecedented for a horror movie.
HAHAHAHA! It's true.... This film DRAGS A TON.... There are long takes of characters just walking or doing house chores.... I usually just stick with Part 2..... That one has better characterization with a fun group of kids.... Though I like early 80's slashers cause they feel very "70's" and the core group of friends don't seem to fall into the horror movie, victim, stereotype....
That's awesome!! Yeah I thoroughly enjoyed everyone of your Docs. I was especially intrigued by the obscure ones that you wouldn't normally see mainstream CZcamsrs show. For example, The Dark Half, View to a kill. All good movies but not much known about the creation of those films. And they aren't just 10 20 minute docs, their legit ones. So yes, I enjoy yours most than anyones because of the genuineity of the type of film it is. Cant wait for more
I really think Friday the 13th still holds up to this day. Now that is probably the nostalgic side of my brain typing right now. even today we have movie posters in our TV room and the one that stands out the most is the original Friday the 13th poster. also I think most children of the seventies and early 80s went to some type of summer cabin camp (Boy or girls scouts, 4h, YMCA etc) so it added to the experience. We all know what those ratty cabins looked and smelled like, dirty lake water and community showers. I swear everyone seems to think they had a "crazy Ralph" type character that lurked around too. The best Friday the 13th was the first one 1980. By far, I remember watching the scary trailer on Saturday afternoons as a young boy and saying this movie was going to be Big. I knew it, because there was nothing like Friday the 13th up to 1980, except maybe Halloween by John Carpenter, but that wasn't near as gory as Friday 1980.
Baghead Jason by far the most terrifying. When he comes up from that bed...pants shitter...I remember I was 9 seeing those commercials and eventually the movies. Awesome

Great review! Don't forget about Amanda Wyss' Tina, from ANOES, who's protagonist set up role and iconic death scene, is one of horror movies best, and arguably a direct nod to Janet Leigh as well.
Why Friday the 13th is Superior to Halloween The first Friday the 13th is a realistic example of workplace violence-triggered by an event (It is her son's birthday & this cause her to finally snap). It is all to familiar: .1) The perpetrator quits & comes back a long time later after the employers have forgotten & the boss has amicable relationship with perp. Steve thinks Pamela is her friend, they obviously hang out together, she has known him all her life. 2) The character seems normal. Mrs. Voorhees is not some huge bald goon in a hockey mask. She is a well-groomed middle-class woman who owns a new jeep & is clearly educated. She clearly has gotten on her with her life for 20 years. 3) The victims were not responsibe. 4) The perpetrator knows the location and uses this knowledge to their own ends. Mrs. Voorhees might have even still be employed at the camp in the first film. She knows every inch of the place. 5) The perpetrator tries to rationalize their actions-Pamela leans against the wall & says "Steve should never have opened this place again" and you sense real remorse. 6) The perpetrator is sadistic. Pamela could have killed Alice quickly and does not do so. Perpetrators in a mass killing usually take a hostage & that is what happens here. Mrs. Voorhees is in no big hurry to kill Alice. In mass murder situations once males have been neutralized the female victim is often raped as an act of hatred. Mrs Voorhees wants to keep Alice alive for a while to torture. 7) The perpetrator is egocentric. Michael Myers does not care whether he is killed-he cannot be it seems. Mrs. Voorhees shows genuine horror & panic in the scene where Alice runs at her with the machete & she realizes that her own life is about to end. For someone who kills others so callously & desecrates their bodies with arrows through crotches Pamela Voorhees likes her own life. She probably though she would get away with it. 8) Her motives make zero sense to the current employees. Alice has no idea. 9) The perp is a schizophrenic.
The moments preceding Brenda’s murder with the child screaming always fucked me up when I saw this as a kid. There was something unnerving about it. Don’t know how Mrs. Voorhees was able to do that but it’s still such a good scene.
i think we felt most connection with Brenda because she was a likable character, and so we were anxious that someone observed her, how i would love that she was the final girl
How can it be a morality tale when Alice is sleeping with not only her boss & some guy in California but seems to be putting the moves on Bill? She is practically a swinger.
Yeah the morality tale thing is bullshit in most early 80s slasher movies. The only morality tales that I can think of are Prom Night, House on Sorority Row and Sleepaway Camp.
i really wish friday the 13th 1980 had trimmed off a few moments of it's running time and used those very few moments of the film to actually INTRODUCE mrs. voorhees. 'hey, kids! meet mrs. voorhees. she will be in charge of the kitchen, the cooking and all of the supplies this summer!' then show her being actually protective and helpful to the kids in her charge; the way it should have been done for her son. then have a shot showing how proficient she is with a knife. just FIVE minutes TOPS. how hard would that have been? they make a film and set it up to be a who done it? and then the killer is someone we have never seen before in the movie! the idea of the killer being sent into space goes all the way back to when john carpenter was approached to direct a halloween sequel. carpenter when asked what the plot of his film would be said he was going to send michael meters into space. the producers of course rejected this idea. have you heard the one about how cannon films in the 80's was wanting to direct a michael myers vs. leatherface film? of the one about how halloween II (1981) was ALMOST shot in 3-d? that idea was shot down due to budget limitations. in siskel and ebert's review of horror films they often mention violence against women and speak of the antagonist as being male, failing to recall in friday (1980) the killer was indeed a woman.
I’m really enjoying your semi- unpredictable style of film choices, shedding light on overlooked with popular: 70’s King Kong? A View To A Kill?? Well done, sir! My one complaint about this movie here is that I personally just don’t enjoy seeing people getting hurt, but it’s undeniable that this film is deservedly a milestone and deserves exactly the type of spotlight given here. And since it sounds like you’re open to them, here’s my request: ‘Bad Boys’ with Sean Penn, and Sean Penn in general.

Hah! If you’ve seen it then you already know, but if you haven’t, it’s a tour de force and you’ll be glad you did! Penn has almost no dialogue in the film and it’s the role he chose to follow Fast Times when he probably could’ve had a comfortable career playing surfer dudes, instead taking a hard turn into serious drama. Whatever anyone thinks of his personal life, he is the definition of an actor who commands the screen, and his range and diversity of roles is so unequaled it’s almost easy to take for granted as a whole.
I think the original Friday The 13th is just as important and influential as the original Halloween! It’s in my TOP 5 ranking of the franchise. I think a remake WITHOUT Jason is the only way to go. Jason should be heavily referenced like in the original, but don’t show up till the end for the sequel. The remake should focus solely on Pamela Voorhees and her revenge against the counselors of Camp Crystal Lake. I’d be interested to see who they’d pick for the role to follow in Betsy Palmer’s footsteps.
This was well done. I’m just curious as to why an earlier draft of the script wasn’t included... part of Pamela Vorhees finger was cut off in the first death at the beginning, and then revealed later when Alice meets her when all hell is breaking loose. Would’ve been a good ‘Fun Fact’ to include. Regardless, this was a great review. Thanks for putting this together. Can you do one for ‘The Thing’ ?
Such a great look back at one of the most iconic horror films of the 1980's. I always thought that over the years the film would lose its shock value, but, I'm always proven time & time again. By the film its
Good, nicely researched quick history of a beloved bad movie (which does have some good-movie elements)....only thing missing, for me, is a quick discussion of the relatively high quality of the location photography. The reviewer also has a good voice for this kind of thing.
Seeing as how Sean Cunningham never intended for this film to be anything other than a cheap Halloween knock-off, I'd say it exceeded everyone's expectations.

It seems more realistic in some ways that some angry ex-employee would have a workplace violent killing spree. It happens in real life & usually long after the employee was fired.

This movie , and Halloween, would come to define my entire life. I instantly became a fan of both movies, and I will not pick one over the other as my favorite, because my love for each of them is that strong. I am now, just having a birthday yesterday, a 49 year old man, with a bedroom completely filled with horror memorabilia, especially from these movies. And , I might add, I also received a personal Happy Birthday message from Adrienne King who plays Alice. We met at a convention several years ago and she is such a sweetheart.

It was a paradox- I’d HAVE to watch them (over & over & over) then would inevitably be too terrified to close my eyes for the following several nights. I think it wasn’t until I was 22 or 23 that I could actually handle going to sleep in the dark.... Lol, GOOD TIMES! 👏🏻
I like how the film has atmosphere and builds suspense, so when the gore shock moments happen, you've been forewarned...!
Manfredini's score helps a lot too.
One of the criticism was how it tend to drag in order to create the suspense like the scene where Alice was making coffee.
I agree, i actually find the first Friday quite creepy and unsettling in areas, like that scene where you see the curtain move briefly if you know what Im referring to, I think its a curtain lol But theres a real suttle vibe and odd atmosphere. I feel that was lost in the sequels even though I love Jason.
@@PungiFungi The scene where Alice is making coffee is brilliant. By that time, there are only two people left. You know that one will probably die at any moment. Plus, it was early in the slasher cycle...the idea that the last person will usually be a girl was not so ingrained at that time. The scene where she makes the coffee was a good solid two minutes long...excruciatingly long when you know something is GOING to happen, but you're not sure when, or who's going to get killed. When she goes into that pantry closet, you just KNOW something's going to happen to her. But it doesn't. This movie is a masterpiece. And the scenes where nothing happens are a big factor in that.

You're right, the sequels didn't have the patience that was displayed in the first film. I like the sequels, but the original is in a whole different echelon of film.

I never was a fan of movie critics Siskel and Ebert.
Siskel was by far the more humorless and prissy of the two of them, and it rankled him that he never reached the likability or fame of Ebert, who was a somewhat nice person
@@edvaira6891 ,one thing I noticed is they both tended to look down on a lot of movies that were fan favorites....and they gave good reviews of what i considered boring movies.........Yes everyone like something different...that's fine. their negitive look on movies fans like over time became funny because those movies ended up making a ton of money....wiether it was , Horror, Action or Sci-Fi movies.
I have extremely contrasting views of them. On one hand, their passion and love for filmmaking is admirable, and their childish rants are certainly entertaining. Their contribution to the culture of filmmaking is undeniable, and we should forever be grateful for their influence. I'll admit there's a lot to love and respect about them. However, their frequent instances of douchebaggery get overlooked way too often. These guys were kind of assholes if you look past all the unconditional adoration they have achieved for some reason. They should be held responsible for frequently acting like assholes with rocks up their asses. I'm kind of tired of us doing nothing but showering them with love and praise despite the vile and pompous things they frequently did during their careers.

Betsy Palmer should have gone after Gene Siskel with a civil lawsuit for (attempting) to put her personal address out like that (despite being the wrong address). She could have ended up dealing with another Adrienne King stalker situation. He nearly put her life in danger.,

The _Friday the 13th_ films were always a guilty pleasure for me. They may not have the best writing or execution, but they're atmospheric and fun when it comes to scares.
The first one has the creepiest most unnerving movie score ever in my opinion. I mean the lighting sets etc was atmospheric enough but the music is just extremely creepy. Especially the opening scene when someone is creeping in the night. Classic
I also think the "Mother killing for her son after schizophrenic attacks" Makes it scarier as well. It's not like "Oh, there's a monster guy that drowned." It's "Oh my god, this mother needs help."

The original Friday the 13th movie is by far the best. Among all the Fridays it alone makes some sense, has inventive kills, the strongest feature being the musical score, which is excellent. The movie hasn't aged particularly well, but the score is still freakin' eerie, haunting. Love the sound effects.
One main reason the sequels are ridiculous is the story line. We're supposed to believe that Jason was clever and resourceful enough to survive in the wild, having tracked down Alice after she beheaded his mother and constructed for himself a makeshift shelter (with a toilet!). He became an adept killer and stalked his victims cunningly. Bottom line: he managed to do all that, yet was unable to reestablish contact with his mother all those preceding years.
I disagree. I like the novelty of having his mother be the killer, but the film is just not very well made. It has a lot of positive aspects, but it just is let down by a poor script and mediocre directing (the two people that fight for the rights of the story). Sure, the sequels are ridiculous in some ways, however, they more than make up for it by improving the formula significantly. Part 2, 4, and 6, in my opinion take what the original film did, and expanded upon it so much, that they justify the wacky plot hole. Part 4 is one of my favorite horror films of that era, and I much prefer it to the original.
There's nothing dated about Kevin Bacon's kill. It still looks fantastic.
The theatrical cut looks fine. The 'uncut' version is a joke....some things get cut for a REASON...

Love the original F13th. Hard to believe this was released on May 9th 1980. May 9th is my birthday. I turned 10 when this was released. And here I am almost 50 in 2 weeks. Good lord I'm getting old.
But with age comes wisdom and the experience alone is worth a lifetime of memories. You're very fortunate I definitely grew up in the wrong era. I've grown up with these so much I feel like I almost did.

My dad saw it several times at a drive in theater in 1980. He got me hooked on Friday the 13th from an early age watching a marathon together nearly every Friday the 13th. The nihilism and gritty aesthetic apparent in the film, really works well.
The low budget, the use of an actual run down camp, the cast of unknowns...is why this one is my favorite. Say what you want but this film had real atmosphere and dread, something a lot of horror films back then had and which few, if any have now. I've always said that horror is the one genre that actually benefits from a low budget. Slick and expensive with sloppy cgi ain't scary! Give me practical "dated" effects every time!

Yes, Victor Miller has claimed that he named Jason after a guy who would tattle on everybody when he was a child, but he's also claimed that he got the name by combining the names of his sons, which are Josh and Ian, which is all somewhat peculiar when you consider that he was supposedly going to name the character Josh in the first place.
Jeez. This is by far, easily the best and most complete retrospective on F13th I've seen on CZcams, and I've seen quite a few! A thousand congratulations to you!
I beg you, please do the same for the sequels. Many of them deserve it. And I'd love to see that.
This was my fave of the series for the longest time, underpinning my Scream 2-esque philosophy that the original in any given series is the best simply because without them the sequels, no matter how good, wouldn't exist. I still mostly hold to that philosophy today but my favorite is now Part 2 simply because it trims so much padding that plagued the original. It was a tighter plot and made for a better movie while still including some of the charms of the original (i.e. the rural summer camp location that is missing from most of the series). I wouldn't mind seeing a remake of this story. I think it could be way more scarier in the right director's hands despite this still being a minor classic in my book. Great series! You put alot of work into these videos and I look forward to seeing more.

Perkins was in the entire film. He owned the hotel & in a sense the hotel was his psyche. His killing began when his mother met his stepfather & his stepfather built the hotel so the building itself was part of his life-he couldn't make a go of it in the diner after he is released in the sequel when he tries to go straight. Palmer on the other hand didn't own the camp & when she says "we can go now" she obviously just wants to leave Crystal Lake after killing the final witness & get back to her life. Unlike Norman, who was stuck in the hotel, Pamela is kind of hasty to leave in her jeep. Steve is an old friend, but he is surprised to see her there. Point is, we get to know Perkins better. But in real life in real workplace violence the victims are like Alice-they have no idea who the ex-employee.
@gregory garner But in real life workplace killing sprees, the new employees have no idea why someone is on a spree. There are also cases where a survivor will speak of having a dream like Bacon's girlfriend did about the events. One got the impression that Pamela was almost killing Alice as an afterthought when she says absently "We can go now" like all she wanted to do was go back to her life. Pamela was not planning on ending her spree with suicide like most spree killers. In the last second when she sees Alice come at her with the machete Palmer manages to convey total surprised fear at the reality that her own life is about to end.

This was fantastic. F13 (the original) was the very first taste of horror I got as a kid and have been in love with it since, While most look at F13 as a cliche' goof, I take it serious and enjoy its contribution to cinema. The first 4 and part 6 are amazing to watch if going into them with the correct mindset. Fun little sleazy summer flicks.
Dated by today's standards? That Kevin Bacon death still looks way better than today's CGI to me.

Well said. That whole segment was an incredible transition scene. Going from day to night...and from good weather to the storm...so beautifully done. But the shots of the wind in the trees, and on the surface of the water...those were STUNNING.

I genuinely don't have another way to describe it. As I'm not a filmmaker, I don't know how they went about creating such an eerie scene (at least for me) other than suggesting the employment of a "dark filter". That said, if you look back at the early 70's horror and grindhouse pictures (and the 60's horror films using colour rather than black and white, they must've used some type of "dark filter" as the night scenes are quite clearly filmed during broad daylight. I don't know if they knew how to properly light a film which had scenes at night as part of the film.@@randycunningham7318

I was 10 when this movie came out, I remember it so well, because i snuck into the theater, OMG i was freaked out when i left.. didn't sleep much that night.. nor was i happy when my mom sent me away to sleep-away camp 2 months later!!LOL BUT it started my long & happy fascination with all things horror & for many a year after Jason came into play, i was always dressed up as him for Halloween much to my dismay that no one knew who he was until i explained the movie & it became more popular. And now with every Halloween as i decorate.. there is always a Jason waiting in the bush for someone to walk by!
Finding anything about the Friday The 13th series that I don't know is doing something and yet you had several things I didn't know. Keep up the great work!!!
Sean S Cunningham is the film equivalent of "Do you know what they call someone who graduates at the bottom of their class at medical school? Doctor." In all seriousness, I think that the fact that the original Friday the 13th was pretty meh and made a ton of money really inspired a lot of filmmakers to say "maybe I could make money, I can make a better film than Friday the 13th, and that film made tons of money" without realizing the marketing skill of Cunningham is a big reason for the success of the movie. So while not every film made money, we got a lot of good slasher movies, but also a lot of bad ones. In fact the a few best 1981 slashers were not particularly successful as The Prowler, My Bloody Valentine, The Burning and Just Before Dawn actually didn't make a profit or even bombed in theaters. And while it is unfortunate that a lot of great films didn't initially make money, at least the movie inspired new and talented filmmakers to go out there, and even though these are mediocre movies, at least the people behind Happy Birthday to Me and Graduation Day made money even if the films weren't that great. but I think that it made people realize that they had a chance of success and they could really try to make a movie.

This film is not dated in a bad way. It’s a product of its time in the best way possible. Everyone knew the kind of film they were going to make and the film doesn’t really try to be anything it’s not. Being heavily influenced by Halloween, even telling Victor Miller they were going to rip Halloween off and so Miller wrote a script that basically had a bunch of kills and set the film out in the woods at a summer camp so the characters are more isolated from help than in Halloween. It’s because of this isolation and that anyone could be in the woods lurking around all the while the camp councilors are not close to help, the tone and atmosphere the film has is creepier than Halloween to me. This is an excellent film, though I do think the sequels made this film even better as the film basically has a humble beginnings to it when marathoning the franchise.
As if a stalker wasn't bad enough, on the 25th of January 1990, Adrienne King had to deal with a devastating tragedy that scarred her for life. That night, bad weather had been causing aerial traffic jams at the John Kennedy International Airport in New York City, and one inbound plane, AVIANCA Columbia Flight 52 from Bogota ran out of fuel when the pilots didn't declare an emergency. The Boeing B707 passenger plane crashed in the Cove Neck community, literally metres away from King's house. She wasn't hurt, but was the first one on the seen and helped with rescuing survivors and pulling the bodies of victims from the wreckage. Sadly, 73 people onboard the airliner died in the crash, while 85 people survived. Thankfully, King has made a bit of an acting comeback and even reprised the role of Alice Hardy in the "Friday The 13th" fan film "Jason Rising" in 2021, 40 years after she last played the iconic character.

If they would have just ended it with this one movie, and not creating the Jason character, I would have been perfectly happy. For me, this was the scariest movie in the franchise’s history.
I continue to be impressed with the detail and the fascinating information. Friday 6 is my favorite guilty pleasure because of how over the top it is. By the time I saw the original the impact was ruined by the sequels. It's probably been 25 years since I've seen it. Maybe it's worth watching again. Oh here a fun story. I've worked with Tom Savini, he's actually a pretty nice guy on set. At the time I was in film school and we were shooting his first romantic lead role (to this day it's never been completed, but that is a very long story.) While on set he needed a comb and I had one of those knife combs like he used in Dawn of the Dead. He was like "I used one of these in Dawn of the Dead!" I said. "I know, that's why I bought it!" Not sure if I still have it, it was almost 10 years ago now.

Great video. Nowadays people often call this movie boring and tame and what not, and you would hardly find someone who doesnt think at least some of the sequels excell at its job. Well even tho I love the entire franchise, as well as Jason, this will always be the best to me. Its simplicity and almost romanticised time frame vibes make this a truly comforting watch for me, even with it being a murder mystery lol

I wish you'd spent more time on the marketing of this movie, as it's the main reason it became such a success. I do love this movie, but it wasn't popular because it was better than any of the other slashers coming out at the time. Its success is due to it being HEAVILY marketed to teens and opening on a ton of screens, which was unprecedented for a horror movie.
HAHAHAHA! It's true.... This film DRAGS A TON.... There are long takes of characters just walking or doing house chores.... I usually just stick with Part 2..... That one has better characterization with a fun group of kids.... Though I like early 80's slashers cause they feel very "70's" and the core group of friends don't seem to fall into the horror movie, victim, stereotype....

For example, The Dark Half, View to a kill. All good movies but not much known about the creation of those films. And they aren't just 10 20 minute docs, their legit ones. I really think Friday the 13th still holds up to this day. Now that is probably the nostalgic side of my brain typing right now. even today we have movie posters in our TV room and the one that stands out the most is the original Friday the 13th poster. also I think most children of the seventies and early 80s went to some type of summer cabin camp (Boy or girls scouts, 4h, YMCA etc) so it added to the experience. We all know what those ratty cabins looked and smelled like, dirty lake water and community showers. I swear everyone seems to think they had a "crazy Ralph" type character that lurked around too. I knew it, because there was nothing like Friday the 13th up to 1980, except maybe Halloween by John Carpenter, but that wasn't near as gory as Friday 1980.
Baghead Jason by far the most terrifying. When he comes up from that bed...pants shitter...I remember I was 9 seeing those commercials and eventually the movies. Awesome

Great review! Don't forget about Amanda Wyss' Tina, from ANOES, who's protagonist set up role and iconic death scene, is one of horror movies best, and arguably a direct nod to Janet Leigh as well.

Why Friday the 13th is Superior to Halloween
The first Friday the 13th is a realistic example of workplace violence-triggered by an event (It is her son's birthday & this cause her to finally snap). It is all to familiar:
.1) The perpetrator quits & comes back a long time later after the employers have forgotten & the boss has amicable relationship with perp. Steve thinks Pamela is her friend, they obviously hang out together, she has known him all her life.
2) The character seems normal. Mrs. Voorhees is not some huge bald goon in a hockey mask. She is a well-groomed middle-class woman who owns a new jeep & is clearly educated. She clearly has gotten on her with her life for 20 years.
3) The victims were not responsibe.
4) The perpetrator knows the location and uses this knowledge to their own ends. Mrs. Voorhees might have even still be employed at the camp in the first film. She knows every inch of the place.
5) The perpetrator tries to rationalize their actions-Pamela leans against the wall & says "Steve should never have opened this place again" and you sense real remorse.
6) The perpetrator is sadistic. Pamela could have killed Alice quickly and does not do so. Perpetrators in a mass killing usually take a hostage & that is what happens here. Mrs. Voorhees is in no big hurry to kill Alice. In mass murder situations once males have been neutralized the female victim is often raped as an act of hatred. Mrs Voorhees wants to keep Alice alive for a while to torture.
7) The perpetrator is egocentric. Michael Myers does not care whether he is killed-he cannot be it seems. Mrs. Voorhees shows genuine horror & panic in the scene where Alice runs at her with the machete & she realizes that her own life is about to end. For someone who kills others so callously & desecrates their bodies with arrows through crotches Pamela Voorhees likes her own life. She probably though she would get away with it.
8) Her motives make zero sense to the current employees. Alice has no idea.
9) The perp is a schizophrenic.
@29:17 a physically impossible killing....unless jason already had the barbed wire on the same side of the tree as Ralph.
I wonder what the story would have been like if the actress that played Alice had wanted to stay for the sequel and not be killed off.
The moments preceding Brenda’s murder with the child screaming always fucked me up when I saw this as a kid. There was something unnerving about it. Don’t know how Mrs. Voorhees was able to do that but it’s still such a good scene.
i think we felt most connection with Brenda because she was a likable character, and so we were anxious that someone observed her, how i would love that she was the final girl
How can it be a morality tale when Alice is sleeping with not only her boss & some guy in California but seems to be putting the moves on Bill? She is practically a swinger.
She deserves punishment.
Yeah the morality tale thing is bullshit in most early 80s slasher movies. The only morality tales that I can think of are Prom Night, House on Sorority Row and Sleepaway Camp.
i really wish friday the 13th 1980 had trimmed off a few moments of it's running time and used those very few moments of the film to actually INTRODUCE mrs. voorhees. 'hey, kids! meet mrs. voorhees. she will be in charge of the kitchen, the cooking and all of the supplies this summer!' then show her being actually protective and helpful to the kids in her charge; the way it should have been done for her son. then have a shot showing how proficient she is with a knife. just FIVE minutes TOPS. how hard would that have been? they make a film and set it up to be a who done it? and then the killer is someone we have never seen before in the movie! the idea of the killer being sent into space goes all the way back to when john carpenter was approached to direct a halloween sequel. carpenter when asked what the plot of his film would be said he was going to send michael meters into space. the producers of course rejected this idea. have you heard the one about how cannon films in the 80's was wanting to direct a michael myers vs. leatherface film? of the one about how halloween II (1981) was ALMOST shot in 3-d? that idea was shot down due to budget limitations. in siskel and ebert's review of horror films they often mention violence against women and speak of the antagonist as being male, failing to recall in friday (1980) the killer was indeed a woman.
Yeah this film would be significantly better if it was edited down to 60-70 minutes

I’m really enjoying your semi- unpredictable style of film choices, shedding light on overlooked with popular: 70’s King Kong? A View To A Kill?? Well done, sir! My one complaint about this movie here is that I personally just don’t enjoy seeing people getting hurt, but it’s undeniable that this film is deservedly a milestone and deserves exactly the type of spotlight given here.

Hah! If you’ve seen it then you already know, but if you haven’t, it’s a tour de force and you’ll be glad you did! Penn has almost no dialogue in the film and it’s the role he chose to follow Fast Times when he probably could’ve had a comfortable career playing surfer dudes, instead taking a hard turn into serious drama. Whatever anyone thinks of his personal life, he is the definition of an actor who commands the screen, and his range and diversity of roles is so unequaled it’s almost easy to take for granted as a whole.
I think the original Friday The 13th is just as important and influential as the original Halloween! It’s in my TOP 5 ranking of the franchise. I think a remake WITHOUT Jason is the only way to go. Jason should be heavily referenced like in the original, but don’t show up till the end for the sequel. The remake should focus solely on Pamela Voorhees and her revenge against the counselors of Camp Crystal Lake. I’d be interested to see who they’d pick for the role to follow in Betsy Palmer’s footsteps.
That would be awesome. I don’t like this movie, but I think they can improve upon it in a remake
12 films in total actually. Can't forget the 2009 Friday the 13th and Freddy vs. Jason.

This was well done. I’m just curious as to why an earlier draft of the script wasn’t included... part of Pamela Vorhees finger was cut off in the first death at the beginning, and then revealed later when Alice meets her when all hell is breaking loose. Would’ve been a good ‘Fun Fact’ to include. Regardless, this was a great review. Thanks for putting this together.

Such a great look back at one of the most iconic horror films of the 1980's. I always thought that over the years the film would lose its shock value, but, I'm always proven time & time again. By the film its
Good, nicely researched quick history of a beloved bad movie (which does have some good-movie elements)....only thing missing, for me, is a quick discussion of the relatively high quality of the location photography. The reviewer also has a good voice for this kind of thing.
