Philosophers and scientists have the debated for centuries whether morality is innate, or something that we learn. New research now gives the edge to nativists, who think that morality is innate, but the nurture people have some new arguments up their sleeves!

I'm undecided as of yet. One response an empiricist could give as to the universality of rules is that humans are humans, regardless of culture, with the same or similar needs and wants. You don't need an innate moral sense to create similar moral ideas if human nature (mental and physical) highly encourages certain rules. You don't hit people... because hitting might hurt and injure them, which doesn't change if you're an Inuit or an Aboriginal Australian.

Genetics determine a lot of things, hormones influence your decision making, and environment has some level of alteration to what genes will be expressed.
Neuroplasticity is highest in adolescents for that very reason. Peoples decisions seem to be heavily influenced by nature, nuture AND some degree of free will.

What evidence is there for there being something other than ones environment acting upon their nature?

@@jumbo9386 like what evidence is there for there being something other than nature and nurture being the reason someone acts one way or another

      @@ataraxia7439 I see what you're saying.
The main body of evidence is simply that when you alter people's hormonal profile, even drastically in many cases, it doesn't always create large sweeping differences in their decision making. This would indicate that the logical processes of the brains through neural firing account for a large proportion of decision making, external to emotional state and external to hormones+genes

I don't know, I kinda side with the empiricists on this one. Looking at myself, I believe I learned my morals from other people's behavior and that it wasn't innate. Good video, though.

Nature vs. nurture is obsolete. All nurture affects nature, and nature has it's limitations.
