Bringing An Old Bike Back To Life: Restoring A Rusty Vintage Road Bike

  • My friend had this tired and rusty vintage bike sitting around, with summer coming up he wanted to give it a new lease of life ready to enjoy rides out in the fresh air and sunshine.
After stripping it down to the frame, it was cleaned and polished, obviously it would benefit with a full respray and new decals but he just wanted it cleaning and restoring at this point to save a little money and time and get it back on the road.
All the parts were cleaned, any rust removed with the wire wheel and polished. Some new tyres, grip tape and a new chain have made it smoother to ride and gear changes are working properly again.
Cleaning all the bearings and re-greasing any moving parts have ensured it is going to be a nice bike to ride for this summer and beyond.
    Thank you for watching.

I have 2 early Viscounts. They are weird and I love them.
I’m so glad you preserved the paint and decals. Great colors too. Well done, sir.

There's a lot that goes into a rebuild, even when you don't polish everything to a mirror finish, or delve into fixing finish issues like scratches. Nice job on it; your friend should be extremely happy.

You know it is a quality frame when he put the bottom bracket back together and the crank span effortlessly. Most modern carbon frames are not that precisely engineered. And the frame is lugged, what a beauty. But, if possible, I would have used a Shimano 105 groupset to update the bike.

One item I added to my kit recently is an ultrasonic cleaner for hard to clean parts like derailleurs and brakes; bearings and shifters. Saves boatloads of time and works great.

Awesome resto. Working on a 1980 Schwinn Suburban right now. It’s incomplete and needs lots of work and the paint is badly damaged so it’s going to be a custom restoration when finished. The whole point of this build is to preserve the Positron II and Front Freewheel System that’s on the bike, because it’s unique old tech that I think is awesome.

when renovating aluminium parts like these, if the protective anodized coating is taken off with a wire wheel, then they should be polished to a mirror finish. If left like the parts in the video(rough with deep marks from the wire wheel), those parts are going to corrode like there's no tomorrow. A mirror finish is not just for looks, minimizing the surface scratches helps in prevents areas where corrosion can form.
All that being said, if the bike is ONLY ridden in dry weather, then it should be okay.

Can I use some kind of coating to limit rust?

    • @barca97100
      @barca97100 Před 2 lety +1

@@Fred_the_1996 for steel parts yes, there are multiple products such as boiled linseed oil and WD-40, however aluminium parts need to be either anodized or polished to keep out corrosion. They can also be clear coated but this can chip and fail quite quickly.
Mirror polish or anodization are the best solutions for raw aluminium

Been enjoying these vids since discovering your channel. I'm certain you didn't acquire the finesse - not to mention the dizzying array of expensive specialty tools you have at your disposal - in some overnight bid to become a You Tuber. Do you have a background in some related area like motorcycles / cars / boiler servicing /plumbing etc ? Even your clothing and the colour of your hands suggests that you work in a related field. Not being nosey, just curious. Your skills are off the hook.

I dunno how many years you've been doing this to your skin and if you're taking care of yourself after work is done. So perhaps this bit of advice is useless to you. But I must say, after too many years, we never wore gloves, those chemicals finally destroyed my skin. Im not even that old of an ol' far* ... youve got to wear gloves
