  • Was Queen Padme Amidala’s first name a secret? Yes. Her true name, Padmé Naberrie, was a secret to preserve anonymity for herself and her family. It was tradition for Naboo’s rulers to forsake their true names during the entirety of their reign. A sign that they were acting in service of the planet and not in vanity. And of course it also added a layer of protection for her and the Naberrie family. So throughout the election she was known simply as Amidala. That identity became like an entirely different person that Padme and her decoy, Sabe, would take on, as if they were playing a character. When her two terms were complete, she kept the name Amidala as a senator when secrecy was no longer required. #starwars

I imagine some of the 'Protection' would be against Naboo's previous monarch, King Ars Veruna. He was hideously corrupt and had a network of minions who could put Padme and her family in danger, including Gardulla the Hutt, the Bando Gora, Black Sun, and his vicious security chief Maris Magneta.

For those who want more about Amidala’s (and her handmaidens’) story, go read EK Johnston’s excellent books: Queen’s Shadow, Queen’s Peril, and Queen’s Hope

Is that why Popes change their name?

They do it to honor previous saints/blessed men (as of now only men can become pope) because the first to change their name was originally named Mars, a false god

In hindsight, it’s still a dumb name

Prequels were so bad that a trilogy of books had to be written for Padme and the handmaidens.

It’s not like anything in the books is 100% necessary information. The thing that really saved the prequels was the clone wars, not the books.

@@garrett8707 Clone Wars saved the Clones. The Jedi and senate still sucked. The books have given Padme a personality and done a lot to justify the Separatist war for independence.
