- My entry for the @dainermade #rubbishwood21 challenge!
Had a lot of fun putting this one together! 😄
I hope you enjoyed it, please like and sub to help me out!

Mark from DainerMade is challenging makers to make something, out of wood that would be be considered 'rubbish'. I'm using hardwood dowel offcuts that were destined for the fire pit. Horrible, splintery, sap filled dowel offcuts that is.
This video was released on my birthday (yay, Happy Bday to me! 🎉) so I thought as I'm getting older, it might be fun to go back and try to recapture some of my youth a little!

This brought back memories of a Military radio antenna kite that my brother and I got hold of when I was about 10 - 71 years ago. Made of aluminium and silk, once it lifted a few feet it went stratospheric very quickly, but then I got bored just holding the string. Much more interesting in later years when I had to design a wire shape (like an arrowhead) to hold the three flattened oval plastic tube arms of a two-string stunt kite that a company was trying to create to rival the current Peter Powell market leader. I got it right eventually, and the kite was great fun to fly and was very maneuverable, but when it got out of control and dived into the ground, it hit with such force that the plastic tubes eventually split around the spring, so it was only a limited commercial success. Unhappily for my children it was one of those instances where only daddy could fly the kite as it would have lifted them off the ground, or dragged them away, as it took a lot of strength to control its pull in anything more than a gentle breeze. I loved flying it horizontally, about two feet above the ground, but if I got confused and pulled the wrong string to reverse direction at the end of a 'pass', that was when a crash occurred.
Now that's a story! Would have been very impressive to see the military one go straight up I imagine! I've seen, but never used, stunt kites - they look pretty damn amazing and I was once tempted to buy one, but with my sense of direction I know that I'd send it straight into the ground more often than not. 😄 You need to write an autobiography Don, from the little tidbits of info here and there, I feel there's an epic life story being lived! :)
My friend, I remembered my childhood years. you created a beautiful kite. congratulations. 'll see. stay healthy and happy...
Cheers Mehmet, it was a lot of fun to put together! 👍
@@woodfather yes it was a fun exercise. see you buddy. Cheers.
Great build mario! The kite was perfect, blame the melbourne winds!
I quite enjoyed the video! Cheers!
Cheers Vipun mate, it was a fun one to make 🙂
dang that brings back memories! mustve been a great time. Love it!
Cheers, it was great fun! If we hadn't gone into lockdown here in Melbourne, we'd be heading out over the weekend to test it out again!
That was funny ! I reckon with enough wind it'll fly. Great video Mario !
Here's hoping man! Shame I ran out of time to get the vid up or I'd had held out for a better day.
Good job mate, it sort of worked & you had fun. Success
You had me at, “cut the wood longer” 😍👍
Good luck 👍
(6:01 been there, done that! LoLoLoL 😅👍😁)
That was probably my favourite joke in the whole video 😂
"Cut the wood a little bit longer™©" 🤣 I always wondered how those box kites flew .... are you telling me ... they don't 😢. Cool project though mate, great fun!
It's all just a scam, Big BoxKite doesn't want You, The People, to know! 😝
@@woodfather 😲🤣
Some really great editing in there Mario & I really love the way you told a story throughout! Who cares if it sorta did, sorta didn't fly?
What a great project and a great entry to the challenge. And anything that gets your kids outside enjoying life is a bonus! Subbed.
Cheers Jamie, much appreciated! The kids and I had a ball, we're actually coming up to the first non-lockdown weekend that isn't pouring with rain since making the kite, so fingers crossed we get a bit of a breeze tomorrow and we can get this thing up in the air!
Haha mate this was sick! Killed the concept 👏👏👏 Your editing is flawless too
hehe, thanks man, glad you liked it! 👍
Awesome build Mario. I watched it twice just for the editing, haha. Lovely 😁👍. Pity it didnt fly, looked like it could have!
ahahah, thanks man, pump those numbers up for me lol 😄
I think we'll get it airborne, just need a decent day for it, fingers crossed this weekend is better!
😁😁😁😮 bloody brilliant attempt mate, last time I remember flying a kite I was at Greenbrook primary school in Epping & we had a school camp in a place called Kangaroobie, never ever found out where that was as an adult but I made a kite that took flight & it is a memorable time in my life 👍👍👍
Kangaroobie? That doesn't even sound like a real place! 😄 Glad you liked the vid mate 👍
Blame it on the wind, or the lack of! Well you did use a whole bunch of "rubbish wood" and even garbage/rubbish bags! I am sure that cute kid in you will figure it out...maybe the rubbish bags should have had some holes cut into them?! Happy Birthday!
It was a pleasant video, congratulations, I wish you success👍🏻☺️🔔👍🏻
Thank you very much! 😊
Love it! Clearly not enough wind, no fault of the operator... 😅
It's barely gone above a light breeze for the past two weeks as well, where has all the wind gone! 😂
@@woodfather I think we had some of it here yesterday... 😁
Brought back memories of being a kid
Not the kite making, the kite flying only time I was successful it got attacked by a killer gum tree
Looked like you had fun
Ahaha, I managed to hold onto my kites as far as I can remember, but I do know that at least two of my boomerangs were swallowed up by some bloody gums!
Haha great video Mario 😂 and looks like you guys had fun or at least alot of exercise flying it 👍
😆 Such a good time, we didn't even get it to fly but the kids are keen to try again!
Nice build, mate, bummer she didn't take flight into the big Blue yonder.👌🏽
Rubbish bags on rubbish wood, I though for sure she'd take off, bugga.
An R.C chopper wouldn't have gone astray, so long as she was out of video shot!😉
Sad dad is sad😞
I even took the kids drone down there, I was tempted to hitch the kite to it and fake the flight 😄😄 Cheers Bill, I'm sure (well, hopeful) that it will get some air time soon!
@@woodfather
Wonder if you towed her up high enough to catch a flow and somehow cut the tow-line, if she'd stay up?🤔
Great idea Mario, very original I think. I definitely think it would work as well if you had wind lol does it get windy in Australia 🍃🇦🇺😂 kids looked happy to have a good old laugh at dad anyway so that's the main thing 😂🤣 ps happy 50th
I was tempted to just do some special effects to make it look like it actually flew 😆 it certainly does get windy here, just not whenever you plan a kite flying expedition three weeks in advance...
And also, oi!
40 ya bastad! 😆😉
@@woodfather haha oh sorry I didn't hear you say 40 I just assumed it was 50th😂😅
@@karlpopewoodcraft Unsubscribed! 😄
@@woodfather haha 🤣😂
It hovered gracefully a metre off the ground for a good few seconds there... 😁
Damn, maybe I should go back and do a super slo-mo edit :D
Fantastic Mario! Bit disappointed though that l didn't get a guernsey to the Big 40...the invite must be still in the mail l spose 🤔😁 I was really hoping the kite was going to take off into the stratosphere....l'm blaming the lack of wind 👍👍 Ooh well, you gave it your best shot.....10/10 for effort old boy 👍 Gotta say your editing style is making us all look stupid....good work mate 👍😁🇦🇺
I decided to save you the trip down champ as I knew the good luck in Melbourne couldn't last, my birthday was _always_ going to be 'cloudy with a chance of covid lockdown' Feel free to post my gift tho! 😄 I still have high hopes for the kite, the kiddies and I will be back out there over the weekend weather permitting. 🤞 Cheers for the editing kudos, coming along in leaps and bounds though I'm sure it won't be long until I go too far and have black & white artistic shots followed up by Michael Bay-esque random fireball explosions 😄 Can't wait lol
@@woodfather Very thoughtful of you Mario 😂 Good luck with the second attempt mate....the Wright Brothers never gave up, nor should you 👍😁 Heading down to Melbourne Tomorrow.....crossing my fingers that you don't go into lockdown 😬 Have a good one 👍😁🇦🇺
@@diyforknuckleheads yikes, how about that ol' melbourne lockdown...
@@woodfather How’s this... l checked in at the airport here in Coffs Harbour... ordered my small cappuccino ...jumped on my phone to check out the latest news and saw that the lockdown was inevitable....quickly skulked my cappa..... raced over to the checkin counter and got the guys to retrieve my bag from the plane... close call....hope you guys are ok down there 👍👍😁
Good thinking, saved yourself some bother, lucky it wasn't a large cappa or you might have missed the cut off!
Great entry to the challenge, let there be wind! (we could send you some from the place we are, we've got more than enough on the lonesome hill !!)
It's so strange, normally that spot is crazy breezy, but on filming day it didn't want to play ball 😄
We'll head back in a day or two and try again though!
Awsome project and loved the edit
Cheers duder, good to hear from you 👍👍
That’s a shame it didn’t take flight mate. That was a fun and entertaining video.
Cheers Harki, should be good, we're in for some wet weather the next few days so hopefully we get some moments of no rain but plenty of wind!
This video was definitely worth watching for the ending haha.
ahahaha, awesome, I was hoping for a response like that 😄😄
Great video mate. I can see the trees were not moving so I blame a lack of wind.....
Couldn't be me or my design, has to be mother nature, I agree completely 😆
Boxkites need more wind than other kites….thanks for video glad you made it
I thought they needed less wind to be honest 😆 I guess thats why it never flew though, ahh well, it made me happy anyway 🙂
Time to shoot down to Bells Beach. Always plenty of wind down there
Lemme get the ol' wetsuit out and I'll put on a kite surfing clinic with it 😉
Nice one your kite
Hah, glad you liked it, what a shame I never managed to get it in the air!
Mate that was absolutely fantastic!! Love the editing, great project, great to see your kids getting into it. It looked like this was a lot of fun and that's always a win! and Happy Birthday, did you just turn or are you about to turn 40? My 40th is just around the corner!
Turned 40 today! I know, you can't tell, I still got those boyish charms... 😄
@@woodfather haha happy birthday mate!
Wow, i missed this video, i made kites when i was a kid too and also made a box kite for my boy when i was ~40.
Mine worked though haha but i took it to the beach where there was heaps of wind and it had a slightly better weight/size ratio i recon.
Did you eventually get it to fly on a proper windy day?
I never did! We went from one half windy day, to 4 months of freezing cold and rain, by the time summer rolled around the kite was coated in dust and had some rips through it. ☹️ I've still got it, but she'll never fly again...or, ever...
