- I'm looking at the Solarez product I can't believe it's not lacquer in this video. I can't believe they couldn't find a shorter name. It's a little longer than I wanted but I cut out as much as I could and still maintain some flow. Also testing color tints to see if they inhibit drying. I also make a light box along the way.
Dane Nichols builds and repairs guitars in Mt. Shasta, Ca.
Dane, could be that the pigment in that particular dye is partially shielding the resin from curing. Probably needs a lot more cure time with that particular pigment or a pigment that is more transparent to UV.
Winner, winner chicken dinner!! I think that could be the problem all right!
I shot some trans tint mixed in denatured alcohol as a carrier. A yellow, green, blue fade and let that flash off. Shot the ICBINL over that and it dried well in the lights. Also moved the board closer to the lights. As Gert suggested in a comment.
Interesting. I learned something new. Thanks Dane!
You're welcome Billy!
Great video a Dane!!!!!))) Like that light!!!!!)))🎸🎸🎸👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼😊
Thanks you very much Steve.
What's the applicator you're using here? I've been trying to use Solarez ICBINL, but I cannot get the dang stuff to sit flat. Tried brush, makeup sponge, heated/not heated, thick/thin. Everything I've tried so far leaves pitting and high spots, very prone to sanding through while trying to level sand it. Appreciate the video, gives me some idea that it can work.
Hi Yike, I think I probably sprayed it on. I've moved on from all the water borne products. I was having the same problems with Crystalac. It would bubble with a wet coat but if I sprayed dry coats it was rough. I wanted water borne for the safer features but still need to have all the same equipment as solvent based. So I quit trying with WB. I't also not as durable a 2K products.
@@jonahguitarguy Thanks for the response Dane! Yeah, it's quite frustrating.
0 voc? That sounds nice, i hate solvents
Sorry to say none of this stuff really worked out for me. In the real world it was just to fussy.
Sadly, nobody ever talks about what happens when you need to strip this "resin" off due to a mistake or just wanting to change finishes. So far, the only thing that will strip this stuff is lots of sanding and lots of wasted time. Call me when they develop that cool product that strips this stuff.
What a neat set up! How about reflective material on the bench too Dane because the workbench is soaking up UV that could be reflected? I kind of think the LED lamps are maybe not so efficient as they could be? Ultra violet implies beyond the visual accuity of human vision so in theory we shouldn't be able to see it? Still 'n' all- that's what folks are using right? I did lighting at college but that was forty years ago!
I was thinking about putting something on the bench. The lights are a mystery Webster used these exact lights with good success. But he not be using solarrez.
Great video, thank you. What exact lights did you buy? Can you provide a link please? 385nm seems to be the right lights. I believe the Solarez website said it won’t cure with pigments because it blocks the light.
I think that is correct for solid color but there was so little color in the test I'm not sure that;s the only reason. I moved the test board closer to the lights last night and got much better results but only on clear finish. Here's the link, www.amazon.com/gp/product/B086QHSM7S/ref=ewc_pr_img_1?smid=A1IJOTLSC7UYXS&psc=1 and thanks for taking a look.
@@jonahguitarguy Thanks for the link. The lights are 385-400nm, that’s spot on. That makes building a light box an inexpensive project
It comes with age - the low number of brain cells - but we are better at using the few ones that's left😎 Btw. put all the lights on one board, place the object 15-20cm from the light parallel to the board - and it'll cure in 3 mins. Thought - If you use liquid color maybe it doesn't cure right and maybe it doesn't mix right, there's probably a reason that they recommend specific dyes it's gotta be on a base that's compatible or perhaps powder?
Thanks Gert, I’ll try the parallel panel for sure. If that works you will be my hero!
I moved the the board closer to the lights and got good results. Thanks Gert!
@@jonahguitarguy Good to hear -Dane. Have you experiments with pigment Powder yet? I think it will be easier since the pigment is not suspended in some other unknown solution.
@@gerthalberg9735, not yet I just ordered the color that solarez recommends. We'll see whats happen with that.
