    Why have I been listening to Ravel for the last 30 years of my life, and only just today discovered this absolute gem?

      I’ve been going through and listening to EVERY SINGLE piece that we have of Ravel’s published oeuvre. If you want some of his more obscure repertoire, might I suggest these:
      “Frontispiece” for Piano 5 Hands. It’s as close to Atonality as Ravel ever gets. Very Messiaen / Ligeti-sounding! It definitely showcases Ravel’s love for Schoenberg’s music.
      “Histoires Naturelles" - A beautiful song Cycle
      Piano Trio in A Minor
      “Scheherazade” - inspired by Rimsky-Korsakov!

    Outrageous writing for 2 oboes at the opening - 2 minutes without a single break! Maybe they used 3 oboes in a relay... ;-)

    • @virtuousvibes2852
      @virtuousvibes2852 Před 2 lety +16

      I think the oboists were using circular breathing. Basically they suck in some air, play as usual, but when the air begins to run out, they store the air by the sides of the mouth, contract the cheeks to push the air into the instrument while at the same time breathing in a fresh batch of air. Hopefully this explains it 😅

    • @akherousia
      @akherousia Před 3 lety

      The way she songs she sounds like a kid. The technique in the fire is nice, but it is way too squeaky for the princess. This is probably an old recording. In today's opera this would probably not be considered good singing.

    • @andrewfortmusic
      @andrewfortmusic Před 8 měsíci +2

      @@akherousia I absolutely love it. As the fire, she shines especially in those really high notes with the flutes. But as the princess, Sylvaine Gilma sounds so pure and innocent because of how light her vibrato is-personally, i think it enables listeners like me to more clearly discern what notes are being sung.

      I so agree with you! I find Sylvaine Gilma's voice perfect in the fire! I have never heard one so beautiful. For me, this recording of 1961 is absolutely fantastic. All the voices are wonderful. I've had the CD for a long time and I still listen to it with great pleasure! An anthology version...
